Re: [Surviving Leukemia Together] new

It depends on what kind of leukemia she has. There are four different kinds.
Two are acute, meaning they must be treated immediately. Two are chronic.
Depending on the stage of the cancer, someone with chronic leukemia can go
without treatment for a length of time. I have chronic lymphocytic leukemia
(CLL), and though I was diagnosed in February, I haven't had treatment yet. My
doctor is pushing for it though.

There are choices in treatment, depending on the type of leukemia and the
person's overall physical condition. The standard treatment is chemotherapy.
I'm personally reluctant to do that, for different reasons, so I've been
researching alternatives. If you go to www.cancure.org you will find doctors
and clinics offering alternative treatments. I can't say how well these
work--I'm still researching. In some cases, you may need to take the attitude
of "buyer beware." I've also looked into the Cancer Treatment Center of
America--they have a website, but I don't have it in front of me right now.
Bone marrow transplant is another option. I know these are being performed at
the Fred Hutchinson center in Seattle. You can google the contact information
if you're interested.

I should add that chemotherapy works well for many patients. I can only say
that I don't think it's the right treatment for me.

It is all very overwhelming. It took me about a month to let it all sink in.
I'm just looking at it as a trial, something I need to go through, and a
possible learning experience. A positive attitude, they say, is very important,
and I believe it. I also try to relax as much as possible. Favorite music, a
good movie--anything to help decrease the anxiety.

May God help you both through this difficult time.
