I am new to the art of straight razor shaving.  I had a couple of shavers I
purchased from ebay sharpened.  When I shave with one of them, it drags quite a
bit and that makes me real nervous.  Comments/suggestions please.  Could it be
that it isn't sharp or could I not be prepping my face enough beforehand.  HELP
I'm tired of getting so nervous and thinking about changing to safety razors.

I ordered a badger from Hong Kong and added a Gold Dollar razor. Came in about
10 days. The brush is not to bad for $10 the handle is plastic. I gave the razor
a few passes on my King 1200x8000 stone. The razor shaves the same as my other
ones. It "sings" when you pop a hair so should have a good heat treat.

Hi darkeyeniceguy,

You can treat the stone the same way you do for your kitchen knives. Use
whichever you prefer: oil, water or dry. A razor is simply an old-fashioned
knife with a low grind angle on the edge. ;-)

Cheers,
Jeff

I am a Boker King Cutter Junkie.
Just got my 8th king cutter. 6 5/8'ths and 2 6/8ths
Just put a bid on another. it will be my crowned jewel. I replaced the scales
on the first on I got because the scales were broken. Mahogany. sweet. no
lacquer, just lemon oil to treat the wood. it was an experiment and the wood
is holding up quite well. I just use lemon oil once a month... I ramble, but
the Boker Soligens are great blades.

KISS = Keep It Simple, Stupid :-)

While searching for something else I found the following link for a
very simple home made shaving soap. I haven't tried it, but it does
sound good. You could probably spice it up a little by adding your
favorite essential oil, bentonite clay, etc. Personally, I find
glycerin based soap too soft and I use it up too quickly as a result I
prefer the hard shaving soaps.

The answer is not unique. it all depends on the kind of stones you are using.
Though oil in general
cannot make any serious harm, it will penetrate inside some kind of stones.
Stone like Norton waterstone or cuticule must be lubricated with water. Arkansas
needs oil, Japanese
waterstone, as the word itself suggests, requires water.
It all depends on the stones you use.
Hope this helps,

Nicola

What kind of stones are they and what have you used on them in the past.
If you've ever used oil on at stone, you can't switch to water. If
you've used water you can switch to oil, but it's a one way switch.

The composition of the stone matters. For example natural or synthetic
water stones by definition need water. Shapton ceramic stones need
water.

What kind do you have?

Bernie

In getting ready to hone my razor, I was curious about whether to use
water or oil to lubricate my stone. I have used oil on my stones for my
kithcen knives, but this is a different game altogether. Should I use
water so that my stone will not get plugged up?

Hi all
I'm a guy from Sweden (Europe :) and have just recently taken up S.R shaving. I
bought some old blades on the net and a couple of stones too (1000/6000 and a
3000 Japanese) I'm still shopping for a strop and maybe an even finer stone, say
8000 or higher. So far I've managed to get a fairly good edge using cardboard
and some old charts for stropping
(one has to make do in these dire times :)
I'm currently sailing to the east coast of U.S.A and will be going ashore in
Galveston, Texas on the 18th and Charleston on the 22nd of july.
So if you have any tips on where to find shaving supplies at those locations or
have some you want to sell pls let me now.
The ship I'm on only make short landfalls so I'll just have a couple of hours
ashore each time.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Best regards
Bjorn

Well I got my Pipe razor in today just as I was going to work... go figure...
Had to wait all day with it in my cargo pocket, calling me...

So after I get home and get all the "honey-do's" done I jump on the stones to
work out the few chips in the blade. I did about 50 circles on the Shapton 1k
glass stone with a taped spine. When the last of the chips just vanished I took
off the tape and did 10 strokes to level the bevel to the spine. Off to the 3k S
GS, about 10 strokes there and I was off to the Norton 8k. This razor looks to
be a quarter hollow and it felt great on the stones, the 8k norton smoothed out
in just a few passes but I went to 10 passes just to be sure. I use a 30x loop
to see the edge.

One of my experiments lately has been to test out my finishing stones, Shapton
16k, coticule, and Oohira Japanese razor hone. On the .com site I have already
done the 16k and coticule and tonight I would have posted the Oohira, alas the
site is down and I cant post anything... /cry

So I'll post the Oohira findings here till I can post there :) Tonight I got off
the 8k Norton and put my Oohira in my palm and started my usual rutine with it.
I do 15 laps and inspect the edge, if it's uneven I do 15 more, and so on. This
razor didn't need more than 2x so 30 laps total. I took a shower and stropped up
the Pipe with 20 passes, my usual. Made my lather, slapped it on my face and did
20 more passes, wiped off the blade and started the shave.

At this point I'm almost tempted to say the Oohira is at the same level as the
coticule. While the shave was smooth and all I would think the edge off the coti
would be a hair smoother. No real way to tell till the beard grows out a bit and
I can do a few strokes off the coti and shave again to see the side by side
results.

So till next time :)

I'd have to differ on leather being a "natural" product. Certainly the
material is from nature, an animal's hide. But the chemicals and processing
that go into commercially available leathers are no less toxic than the
chemicals in the synthetic leathers.

Unless you're tanning your own hides the same way the native americans
tanned them over 200 years ago, or getting leathers with such a guarantee,
then you're getting chemicals in your leather.

Some vegans will use "recycled" leathers as a means to promote the re-use of
existing products in hopes of reducing the number of new animal products
introduced into the market. most will just abstain and use synthetic
materials or avoid any leather looking products.

If you wear a economical belt bought off the shelf at some place like
wal-mart, even if it said 100% leather, chances are it's left overs from
other productions that's been run through a shredder, chemically treated,
and glued together.

I too follow a vegan diet and prefer not to kill animals. However leather is a
“natural” product as opposed to the vegan strop which is made from toxic
chemicals. I have chosen the natural (leather) strop. I may switch to a
natural non-leather strop if one becomes available.
