Well I got my Pipe razor in today just as I was going to work... go figure...
Had to wait all day with it in my cargo pocket, calling me...
So after I get home and get all the "honey-do's" done I jump on the stones to
work out the few chips in the blade. I did about 50 circles on the Shapton 1k
glass stone with a taped spine. When the last of the chips just vanished I took
off the tape and did 10 strokes to level the bevel to the spine. Off to the 3k S
GS, about 10 strokes there and I was off to the Norton 8k. This razor looks to
be a quarter hollow and it felt great on the stones, the 8k norton smoothed out
in just a few passes but I went to 10 passes just to be sure. I use a 30x loop
to see the edge.
One of my experiments lately has been to test out my finishing stones, Shapton
16k, coticule, and Oohira Japanese razor hone. On the .com site I have already
done the 16k and coticule and tonight I would have posted the Oohira, alas the
site is down and I cant post anything... /cry
So I'll post the Oohira findings here till I can post there :) Tonight I got off
the 8k Norton and put my Oohira in my palm and started my usual rutine with it.
I do 15 laps and inspect the edge, if it's uneven I do 15 more, and so on. This
razor didn't need more than 2x so 30 laps total. I took a shower and stropped up
the Pipe with 20 passes, my usual. Made my lather, slapped it on my face and did
20 more passes, wiped off the blade and started the shave.
At this point I'm almost tempted to say the Oohira is at the same level as the
coticule. While the shave was smooth and all I would think the edge off the coti
would be a hair smoother. No real way to tell till the beard grows out a bit and
I can do a few strokes off the coti and shave again to see the side by side
results.
So till next time :)
