Thanks to everyone for the tips, I got a sheet of 400 grit, taped it to
a piece of glass and drew the pencil grid on the stone. It worked a
treat. The stone turns out to be a kind of soft Arkansas stone, very
coarse so not much help, my search continues for an affordable hone.

If you tape a sheet of 400-600 grit wet&dry sand paper on a flat surface like glass or plexi, you can flatten your hone on it. Doesn't get any cheaper than...

Kevin, Another tip is to take a pencil and mark a grid on your hone. This way when you are rubbing it on the wet/dry sandpaper you will know when it is flat...

Another way some woodworkers flatten their stones is on concrete. Use a back step or someplace where the concrete is flat. Just make sure you wash the stone...
