Re: [stomacentralint] Ileostomy and gastric bypss/lap band

Hi Dianna -

I have a colostomy and urostomy. I had checked into the gastric bypass and the doctor that does this type of surgery said there would be no way he would do it. He said that a person with an ostomy needs to drink at least 64 ounces of fluid a day to stay hydrated and because you can only drink or eat 1 ounce 6 times a day I would have to live on IV's for hydration. My life would be more compramised than if I just did it by diet and exercise. Then he told me that I would have to stick to a diet and exercise anyway so really doing the surgery is just a fullness help and nothing more. He said in time you will be full at a smaller amount anyway. I think it is a HUGE risk.

I am wheelchair bound and have lost 70+ pounds by joining Sparkpeople.com They have a eating plan, calorie tracker, messege boards for support and exercises for al types of people with limitations.

Hello All!

I hope you're all enjoying the holiday season.

I'd like to know if anyone here with an ileostomy has experience with
gastric bypass or the lap band. I have been struggling with my weight
for many years, mostly since I gained 100 pounds when taking
Prednisone before my surgery.

I was just diagnosed with controlled Type 2 Diabetes and would like to
look into the weight loss surgery but just wonder how safe that would
be alongside having an ileostomy.

Any comments you have are very appreciated.

Dianna
