A QUESTION & UPDATE   Message List

Hi All.....I have a question and an update on my most recent hernia repair.  First the question......Has anyone had any experience with the drug "Flexeril"?????   I  asking my surgeon about something for pain, actually "ache management"  for discomfort that comes and goes because of mesh in my belly he suggested I try "Flexeril" as something less habit forming than Demerol or hard on the liver like too much Tylenol, which he felt did not do much to help muscle aches caused by the mesh.

I have done a search on this drug so know a little about it, but wondered if anyone has used it, and what the results were?

UPDATE:  Today the staples came out.......Yeh!!!!!!  I was still having some drainage from one end of the incision and was concerned it might open up.  Doc said that if it was going to do that it will do it even if he left the staples in longer so he saw no need to wait.   He said it would only open if there was infection, and then it would need to be packed if that happened, but so far there is no sign of infection, and I am 12 days out from the surgery.  Actually, the heavy draining suddenly quit yesterday like someone turned off a faucet.  It turns out that during surgery he flooded, and flooded, and flooded the cavity and surgical site with fluids to prevent any chance of infection....water I think, but sterile water or saline solution.  He said a lot came out before he closed the incision, but not nearly as much as had been flushed into the wound area, so he was expecting a lot of ongoing drainage after closure, and that was what I experienced for over a 10 day period until this past Sat. night and Sunday.

The hernia was a small one, but to fix it properly a good stable area was needed to attach the mesh.  This meant that when he got inside he carried the mesh all the way across from the left side hernia location to where he could attach to, and reinforce again the area around my stoma......so......it turns out that I now have a double reinforced parastomal area along with the new hernia being repaired on the other side of my belly.  He should me exactly where the mesh now is installed, and wow is it a large area.  He said he would have loved to go further up higher where I have a belly bulge....not a hernia....and do that also to eliminate that bulge, but just could not reach up that high from the incision location he was using, and did not wish to open me up in another higher place.

All in all it seems I got a lot done considering it was not a long surgery...about 1 1/2 hours.  I feel reasonably good considering, and will continue to take it easy so as the incision continues to heal up.  Barring any complications I will not see the doctor again, but only call in a month to give him an update on how things have proceeded in the healing etc.  He wants me to give the "Flexeril" a try when I have any discomforts from the belly muscles.  I have had severe muscle spasms on a few occasions, but mostly it's just a bothersome aching sensation that he thinks the Flexeril might take care of.  If any have any input on this drug I would like to hear what you have to say.
