Re: [stomacentralint] Photo album

Hi Brad

My understanding is that after an ostomy surgery, you are limited to how
much you can lift, etc. as the intestine is pulled through the stomach
muscle and thus make it weaker and susceptible to hernias. I am in hospital
administration (I lift folders - LOL) and have just been diagnosed with a
prominent peristomal herna where several small bowel loops are protruding
through the opening. I have no idea how as even when coughing or sneezing,
I place my hand over the stoma so as not to cause this same thing!

If you don't feel comfortable or ready to go back to work - it doesn't
matter what date the doctor has given you - that can be changed. People
heal at different rates - some are fit in a month and others 6 months. I
think a lot of it is determined by your illness. Many of us very very ill
and our surgeries ended up being emergency situations. Your attitude toward
your new lifestyle will also play a very big part.

I had a total proctocolectomy where they take the entire colon, rectum and
anus. They then stitch you up and voila! a "Barbie Butt". It's not bad at
all. I've ridden bicycles and motorcycles since my surgery - you just have
to sit gently and not ride until you are completely healed. Keep the area
very clean and dry and the incision will heal better and faster. I was
fortunate. At one month, I only had a bit of spotting where one small area
wasn't wanting to heal. There is also a cream the doctor can prescribe that
helps in the healing process. It is strange because sometimes you can have
phantom pains and/or urges to pass gas or have a bowel movement. Since
there is no opening... that isn't possible.

Just remember... we are here to help you through this. Someone has no doubt
experienced what you are experiencing or has asked the question you are
asking... Ostomists are the most helpful and special people I've ever met!
No question is too crazy (although the answer may be.) LOL Where else can
you go and talk of body issues with strangers? (Who tend to become fast,
special friends!)

Take care and have a wonderful day!

Angel hugs

Tina
