Hi,
Before I answer your question, I should give a little background.
- Major detachment in left eye in 1967. Stitched back into place.
(Lost significant vision in that eye.)
- Minor detachment in right eye in 1973. Tacked back into place
with cryo (freezing).
- Minor detachment in left eye (again) in 1976. Tacked back into
place with laser.
Then, in the early `90s I started losing vision in my right eye (my
good eye!) due to a cataract. Had cataract surgery done and it was
WONDERFUL! Actually improved vision in that eye sufficiently to
remove the "must wear glasses" restriction from my driver's
license.
In the late `90s had cataract surgery in left eye. No problems.
Obviously I didn't get the same level of improvement as the right
eye because the left eye has significant retina damage. But my
vision was much better than it had been in years.
So, what did I do to prepare? It sounds trite, but I chose the
right doctor. My retina doctor stressed the risks of cataract
surgery and said that I *really* needed to go to somebody who
specializes in high-risk cataract surgery. He said that I needed to
go to somebody who's a cataract surgeon, period. He doesn't do
refractions; he doesn't do other surgeries; he just does cataracts
and he specializes in high-risk surgeries! And, no surprise here,
he had a few recommendations. I went with his top recommendation
and I've never doubted or regretted that decision at all.
