Subject: An Interesting article about IFEs
BarbaraFetherolf
Send Email Send Email

The following article costs a little over 2
dollars to read. It was written in 1996 and describes the
problems that IFEs presented the airlines with. It was
very clear that there was a desperation on the part of
airlines to compete with one another to have these systems
available to their customers. The two biggest problems were
that they weren't very reliable and that they used TOO
MUCH POWER. One airline solved that problem in a most
unfortunate way....they had it installed into an essential
bus. It is clear (IMHO) that they were unwilling to
wait as other airlines did, for the technology to
catch up with the capability of the
aircraft.<br><br><a

Barbara,<br><br>I think the author of that
Concorde article clearly nows little, if anything, about
airplane manufacturing. An airplane manufacturer, such as
Boeing, does *not* make engines. Its a very different set
of engineering skills.<br><br>If you are American
Airlines, and you want to buy a 777, you have to order the
plane from Boeing, but then you have to order some
engines for them as well. You get a choice. General
Electric, Rolls-Royce, or Pratt&Whitney. All of theses
companies make lots of engines for lots of different kinds
of planes. Some planes may only have one engine
type, but frequently you get a choice.<br><br>Jeff

Quickly checked the book to-day and no mention of
names, just 1 pilots theory on what happened that night
and what "he" felt were perhaps the causes or cause
of 111 to go down. i go in for surgery on sept. 6th
on both knees so that should keep me out of trouble
for a few days.best to all. mary

Jeff you're right. Look at this recent press
release.<br><br><br>ROLLS-ROYCE: Rolls-Royce and SR Technics sign up for new
joint
venture<br><br>-----------------------------------------------------------------\
---------------<br><br>Story Filed: Wednesday, July 26, 2000 6:39 AM EST
<br><br>JUL 26, 2000, M2 Communications - Rolls-Royce and
Switzerland's SR Technics (SRT), the wholly-owned maintenance
subsidiary of SAirGroup, today signed final contracts
establishing a new joint venture to support operators of Trent
aero engines in Europe and Africa. <br><br>The new
company name, TEMRO, was announced at a signing ceremony
at the Farnborough Air Show. It will begin operating
next year. <br><br>Hans Ulrich Beyeler, Chief
Executive Officer of SR Technics, said: "We will work with
Rolls-Royce as equal partners. TEMRO will enable expansion of
our product portfolio and our range of services to
include the Rolls-Royce Trent family." Ian Lloyd,
Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Aero Repair and Overhaul,
said the formal agreement to create TEMRO marked a key
element in the expansion of the company's Trent support
global network. "This complements our existing joint
venture facilities in Hong Kong, Singapore and Texas,
USA. We're delighted to combine SRT's well-established
maintenance services operations with our own plans for
expansion of aftermarket activities," he added.
<br><br>Maintenance of Trent 500 and Trent 700 engines will be
carried out at SRT's facilities in Zurich while work on
Trent 800s will be handled by Rolls-Royce in Derby.
<br><br>SRT's sister company, Swissair, is among 10 customers
for the new ultra-long-range version of Airbus
Industrie's A340 for which the Trent 500 is the sole engine.
It has placed orders for nine firm plus ten option
A340-600s with entry into service in 2002.

Interesting article. I think it was a bit harsh
at suggesting that this crash would tranish the
image of Concorde so much as to cause it to be shut
down early. Yes its expensive and has limited range
which greatly limits is ability to be a huge commercia
lsuccess. But still, you are zipping along at Mach 2.0.
That is just too cool, considering before the sound
barrier was busted, people speculatedit was impossible to
do such a thing.<br><br>And why the hang up on Rolls
Royce engines?? Concorde isn't the only plane that uses
them. Rolls has been making ariplane eninges for a
*long* time.<br><br>Jeff

From that article in the Globe;<br><br>'The
travellers on the Concorde were lucky in one way. It
happened fast. On board Swissair Flight 111, people had 15
or 20 minutes to contemplate their fate before the
plane crashed into the sea.'<br><br>Those are the
horrific visions many of us have to live with everyday of
our 'lives'.

Sure, there could be. But I don't thinka a pilot
should be starring at a video monitor while taking off
or landing. Look at the panel of Concorde. Packed
with instruments. Confusing. Lots of stuff to look
at.<br><br>There is a concept called "dark cockpit". this idea
says to only present information critical for the
given pahse of flight. everythign else should be dark.
<br><br>In the plane I fly, there is no reasr window. I
can't see behind me. There is no engine back there, but
if traffic is at my six o'clock, what can I do??
Nothing.<br><br>Jeff

As far as I know this book is written from a
pilots point of view and doesn't have anything to do
with families. I'm going to briefly peruse it tomorrow
and let you know. All my best to everyone. Mary

Jeff, don't you think that in this day and age
there could be a video camera behind the wing so that
the crew can monitor what goes on behind them? The
fact that crews cannot see behind them has been the
case for as long as there have been airliners.
<br><br>Just a few thousand bucks of equipment could have
saved all those people. <br><br>(Also, I believe they
cannot see directly above and below the cabin.)

Also, the plane may have been beyond V1 when the engine caught fire. Maybe the
crew had no idea how severe the situation was.<br><br>Jeff
