I'm glad I found this group. My 64 year old
husband has increasing memory impairments for five+
years, resisted testing until 6 months ago at which time
he was diagnosed with AD. I'm seeing much more
behavior and cognitive changes just within the last few
months. A problem: I'm chronically upset and worried
about how I am going to take care of our rent,
financial needs, and eventual in-home support help when
needed. Since we were married 5 yrs ago my husband has
always been fearful and distrustful about his money and
keeps everything separate. Because he does not accept
his diagnosis, he doesn't plan with me for his
incapacity. I have asked him to give me durable power of
attorney. He can't understand why this is important, says
there's nothing wrong. He gets very upset when I
suggested that it may be necessary for me to petition the
court myself. I don't want him to feel threatened, but
he doesn't pay bills any longer (except for rent he
pays with my help)and refuses to buy necessary medical
items (like a hearing aid or his dental care). I've
been paying for everything else with my small
disability income. I know he can't understand or evaluate
the changes I see because he can't remember from day
to day. I have been able to assist him with daily
living, but I'm making myself sick with stress and
fearful feelings of financial insecurity. If anyone has
experienced anything like this, I'd appreciate hearing from
you.
