We DO NOT have an SB clinic in my state so we have to travel to get to some of
my daughters doctors. I get asked all the time why dont I just go to a Sb
clinic, and when I say we dont have one the east coast mantilty of since we have
it EVERYONE has it seems to kick in and they dont belive me, I am soo sick of
haveing to explain it to people wheather in here (rarely) or any of the other
groups and boards I am a member of.
that is OK though you can often find good medical care without going to an sb
clinic and that's great if you do but my point was and is , is that going to one
is sooo much different than seeing seperate doctor's that if you dont' go to one
or never have been to one your not aware of how differently they handle thing's
and the info that they do give out and go by so going by what your physician's
are telling you to do is not a reason to tell someone else that does go to an sb
clinic that what they repeat is wrong that's all i was saying.

It is wonderful that you have been able to find separate private docs who are
knowledgeable in treating the many and diverse issues that can accompany SB! I
have to drive an hour to either of the SB clinics available and I preferred ones
approach better than the other! But in my area of NC I have found that even the
local pediatricians know little about therapeutic care for SB and have no
knowledge of recent studies! I sometimes wish I lived in an area where
physicians had knowledge of this condition! My ped doc here told me I know more
than she does and only sees my son for well checks!

no that wasnt me i dont have a very good "regular" doctor at all in fact he has
a tendency to continusally misdiagnose me with things that are normal for
someone with sb and my level we finally agreed let the sb clinic care for sb
issues and if i have the flu or a minor wound ill go to him because it did get
very ridiculous. the only thing i didnt mess with and this is because i've been
very lucky that i dont have the issues other's have is my ob/gyn he knows every
aspect of sb right down to the shunt and its issues, but thats also something i
do not deal with as mine has been non-functioning since about age 9.

I praise my Ob-Gyn he took it upon himself when SB dignoses(sp) was told on
January 18, 2004 he made the appitmoint in Great Falls with Dr. Thomas Key and
got it confrimed and everything All I had to do was show up at the Keys office
the next day, mind you I was 18 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and I litteraly
had not even 24 hours to decied what I was gonna do. But it was really Benefis
Hosptial in Great Falls that got us hooked up with Dr. Anthony Dorr for uro and
Keys got us hooked up with Dr. Dale Schaffer for nuero. and they are all on top
of ALL the new research out there, and also the shunt that Dr. Schaffer placed
in my daughters head is one of his own patned shunt systems.

I dont have a ped. they are rare here, the family doctor sees both my kids for
vaccines and such, but her nuro is in Great Falls MT 1 hour and 45 mintues away
depending on MT weather, her uro is 2 hours away in Missoula MT depending on MT
weather again, and ortho was 6+ hours away in Spokane WA depending on weather in
MT ID and WA but depending on what happens to the one in Spokane that drive
could turn into a 9+ hour drive to Portland OR depending on MT, ID, and OR
weather. I had to have my daughter in Great Falls because Helena cant do SB I
cannot even take my daughter to the ER for example a broken arm because they no
nothing of SB. I wont even take my non-sb child to the hosptial here in Helena I
will drive to Missoula or Great Falls for the Better care.

Not so much that there arnt SB people as much as with how rual the state is they
try toget one started and then they lose funding to cancer and things like that.

How far do yall have to travel? Some states have only 1 or 2 clinics...we are

I got offered a great job in montana. But after looking at trying to see where
to transfer my daughters records to there was no place in mt. I would have had
to goto the far east side of North Dakota to get to a clinic. I too also thought
every state had them till I researched it and found out they didn't have one.
Once I found out it was going to be like a 15 hr drive to get to clinic I
decided to stay in indiana. and then of course that was only depending on the
weather.

We have a SB Clinic an hour away from us and we opt to have Emmy see all of her
specialists individually in their offices. We chose to do things this way from
the beginning. It is a personal choice and has no reflection on you as the
parent. (Even though in your situation you can't opt to do clinic).
