Antioxidants Appear to Protect Against Type 2 Diabetes
Jukka Montonen of the National Public Health Institute in Helsinki, Finland, and
team, tracked dietary habits and type 2 diabetes incidence among more than 4,000
adults over a period of 23 years. The investigators found that subjects who
consumed diets rich in foods containing antioxidants, notably carotenoids
(compounds found in red, yellow & orange fruits & vegetables), and certain forms
of vitamin E--were less likely to develop the disease. By neutralizing the
cell-damaging effects of free radicals, antioxidants such as vitamin E and
carotenoids may play a role in reducing the incidence of type 2 diabetes.

of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Care. 2004 Feb;27(2):362-6.
