Hi, kids. I'll not be in group Wednesday because I will be in California celebrating Thanksgiving with my family. I hope you all have the best Thanksgiving. Keep me in mind as I take this journey. I'll be with you in spirit.

"I am reminded of Holly Near's song entitled 'Simply Love.' The lyrics begin 'Why does my love make you shift restless in your chair/and leave you in despair./It's simply love--my love for a woman.' She makes the point that it is war and hatred that should rouse our indignation, not affection and love....I, for one, want to encourage long term commitment between loving adults." (Rev. Kathleen Ellis)
Tere Kaulfus has already asked Charles about having alcohol at events and if it would be better to have some alcohol-free events. I don't know how he responded so you should ask him. I think we should visit that question again during an SOS meeting (with you in attendance) and arrive at a decision. I think the group should take on the burden of presenting the issue to the powers that be.
Be well,

Thanks, Charles & kc for your responses. I would be interested in encouraging alcohol-free activities at church, but I don't really know how to do it. I sometimes feel like there is too much emphasis on the drinking, but I know alot of people like having it there. I don't know if I have a feel for what would be reasonable to ask for, in terms of limiting alcohol at events, and in terms of having totally alcohol-free events. I would welcome any suggestions or other comments!

I would be interested in encouraging alcohol-free activities at
church, but I don't really know how to do it. I sometimes feel like
there is too much emphasis on the drinking, but I know alot of people
like having it there. I don't know if I have a feel for what would
be reasonable to ask for, in terms of limiting alcohol at events, and

It does make it a lot tougher when there is alcohol available and other people are drinking.
Then again, I don't want to cramp other people's style. It would be nice to see some alcohol-free events. Even nicer, if someone could bring some non-alcoholic beers. I suppose I could do that, too.
Welcome to the group, Jennifer. I look forward to seeing you at group.

To answer your question on whether I
believe Live Oak should offer alcohol free events, YES!
To expand on that I must say that truly I
myself am not troubled by having alcohol in my presence and abstaining.
That is a personal battle that currently I
am winning. However it would be nice not to put others to that test.
Do I believe LOUU needs to become alcohol
free, NO.
Some of our members and friends would definitely
enjoy the opportunity to enjoy a diner or activity without the presence of
alcohol.
Just my 2 cents…. Charles

Welcome to my monthly newsletter. Yes, it's a pitiful existence but it's mine. Come, share the joy.
My cholesterol was tested last month and was found to be 261; only 9 points lower than when I was tested by the VA a year ago. My bad cholesterol is up in the 180's. I did see a cardiologist about my chest pains and he said that my heart looks good. He wants to perform one more test but I think I'm going to say no to it because it costs $250 and Medicare might not cover it. I need to contact my general practitioner and get on medication for the problem. Plus, there are plenty of dietary changes I can make to bring that number down.
On the last weekend of the month, I went on a campout with the church. Since it wasn't far (in relative terms) from my house, I decided to sleep at home. The first night, I forgot to bring my pillow and medications; the second, I gave my friend a ride back to South Austin and got back pretty late. I did get to paddle out on the lake, have campfires, share an evening potluck, mix and mingle. So, in all, it was a pretty good experience. At least, I have the tent and air mattress that I bought for future trips.
I had a Halloween party at my place. A friend and I decorated the house in advance. I got lots of compliments on it eventhough the wind and rain brought down some of the decorations. Most of the people who came wore costumes. I let them answer the door, especially little 9-year-old Sarah who had a great time handing out candy and toys. I made a big dinner. In fact, I made so much that I had plenty of leftovers. I didn't do it intentionally but I haven't had to cook for a few days.
Two days ago, I had a bridge put in at the VA dental clinic. I don't especially enjoy dental work but I have been needing it for a long time. Afterwards, I attended a fascinating debate between an atheist and a seminarian on the existence of afterlife.
This month, I was supposed to volunteer at KUT (a local public radio station) but when I got there it was loud, messy, too brightly lit, claustrophobic so I backed out. That's fine. At least I get to spend more time helping out the evacuee families at Volente Villas apartments.
That's it. Short and sweet.
Be well,

Today, I slept a lot and watched TV. Yesterday, I stayed in and watched a "Ghost Hunters" marathon on the Sci-Fi channel. The season finale was exciting because the investigators captured the form of a ghost on their thermal cameras.
As for last week, I did pretty poorly with the drinking. It could have been worse. At least I didn't drink to the point of inebriation. But that's no excuse. Last night, I had the greatest urge to go out and buy beer but (applause, applause) I only bought O'Douls non-alcoholic beer-like beverage. I'm proud of that success.
Thanks for asking me how I'm doing but I'm also interested to know your progress. How are you?
I missed the meeting, too, but if I had come, I would have missed out on Ghost Hunters. I WILL be there next week barring any unusual or extenuating circumstance. But I'll see you even earlier than that because I plan to attend the play at the church tomorrow, too.
The appointment with my cardiologist will take place on Oct. 25th. Coming up soon. I can't believe this month is already winding down.
Here's to hoping that your week goes well. Only five and one-half days until the next meeting.

Hello KC
How are you doing? I missed you at the SOS meeting last night. Kate was also unable to attend, so it was a guys discussion night (nice on occasion, but it would get old quick). Did you have your appointment with the cardiologist yet? I am hoping to attend the play at the church tomorrow night. If I don’t see you there, have a good weekend.

Hi all!
This is just a note to let you know that we have nailed down some
additional meeting dates. I had tried to set it up so that we could
meet twice a month on Wednesdays and some other day for two meetings.
Unfortunatly I could not get that to work out. So I went with what we
could get and that is the first four Wednesdays a month at 7:30 in room
103 at Live Oak UU Church
We will begin this new schedule in September starting with the 7'th
I hope to see some of you there. Thanks, Charles

(Secular Organizations for Sobriety/Save Our Selves) Meeting in Room 103
Wednesday at 7:30 PM
This is a reminder that the Recovery Discussion Group will meet
this Wednesday June 22’nd at 7:30 pmat the Church in Room
103.
SOS (Secular Organizations for Sobriety/Save
Our Selves), a support organization for people recovering from alcohol and drug
abuse as well as other forms of abuse, has added a new local group. Meeting:
will be held The Fourth Wednesday night of each month, beginning May 25, 2005, at 7:30 P.M. at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church, Room 103, 3315
El Salido Parkway Cedar Park, Texas 78613
S0S was
founded by Jim Christopher in 1985 in North Hollywood, California.
It is a friendly alternative to Twelve Step groups. S0S offers a secular,
self-empowerment approach, emphasizing that each individual may draw upon his or
her own resources to deal with the problems of addiction—hence the name
“Save Our Selves.” S0S chapters are meeting throughout the United
States and abroad.
Please
Email sos_austin@... if you
plan to attend so that we can ensure that we have a large enough meeting space.
1) This group offers focused discussion and interaction on
topics of addiction – either drugs, alcohol, food or other issues with
which we struggle;
2) This group is a place to share our personal experiences
and to discuss our personal struggles with physical addictions;
3) This group is a place to find support to seek our own
path to recovery, or to find companionship along a path of recovery on which we
may have embarked;
4) This group provides a source for accountability to
others if such is desired;
5) This group provides a safe environment to discuss our
fears, concerns, and joys related to personal issues of addiction and recovery.
What this group is not:
1) This group is generally not a place to focus on
politics, sports, religion, church business, or issues that have a forum in
other groups or other church activities;
2) This group is not a place where anyone will be shamed
or made to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable about their own issues;
3) This group is not a place where any sort of judgments
will be rendered;
3) This group is not a treatment group, does not provide
group counseling or therapy, or provide treatment for addiction. In a
true Unitarian fashion - each participant will have to resolve their own
treatment issues in a way that works best for each individual when each
individual is ready.
Coffee and herbal teas will be provided for refreshments.
We look forward to seeing you.
This is the Anouncment that was sent out in town.
