Our
capacity to see the world around us is the culmination of more thanhalf a billionyears
of evolution. But the most important product of that process is not the eye
itself, but the gradual discovery by the brain
of new ways of interpreting theretinal image.
Most of what we do with the
gush of information from our eyes -controlling
our hands, guiding our posture, deciding what
to look at - happens withoutawareness. But we alsoperceive the world consciously, like a finely
detailed, 'real-time',seamless movie.

I am a NESTA rep and currently helping organize a national Dysphagia course on Risk Management and Ethical considerations in dysphagia. It should be relevant to all client groups adult neuro, L and paeds. We’re keen for a big mix of participants to attend. We’ve also had interest from other professional involved in dysphagia such as Dysphagia Nusres and a nutritional nurse Specialist.
I've attached a flyer for your information. I hope you will all disseminate it to your colleagues and any dysphagia SIGs in your area. We're hoping to get a large numbers of people attending. It will also be advertised in bulletin in the coming months.
I realise the course is running on a Tuesday which was unfortunately the only day we could organise the speakers. The course will be running from 10am onwards to allow for people to travel up on the morning by train if necessary. It's extremely easy access from Newcastle Central Station (about 30 seconds walk!!). There are also plenty of nice hotels and restaurants nearby, should anyone want to stay over.
Feel free to contact me via this email address or the googlemail address stated on the flyer.

Message----- From: Marc Bush [mailto:marc.bush@...] Sent:21 November 200815:35 Subject: New No Voice, No Choice Report Launched
Dear
Friend,
I am writing to tell you about the launch of the new No Voice, No Choice research
report at our parliamentary reception in the House of Commons.
No Voice, No Choice is a 3 year project looking at the provision and support of
AAC in the UK and is supported by BT,
as part of the BT Better World Campaign.
The reception was hosted by Dr Roger Berry MP, who is a long standing advocate
for the rights of disabled people and is currently the secretary of the All
Party Parliamentary Disability Group. We were pleased to see over 100 of you at
the event whose experiences contributed to this year's report.
The new No Voice, No Choice report looks at the state of Alternative and
Augmentative Communication (AAC) services through the lens of professionals.
More specifically, it focuses on current challenges to the funding,
provision and support of professionals in their delivery of AAC services.
The report calls on the Government to deliver a commitment to children and
young people who use AAC through the implementation of the forthcoming Child
Health Strategy and the Bercow Implementation Plan. The report further
highlights the need for the Government to focus on support for adults (post-19)
who use AAC. The report concludes by making 10 recommendations to Government,
calling on them to take action to ensure all disabled people enjoy their fundamental
human right to communication.
Thank you
once again to all those who attended the event, it was great to have so many
voices of expertise in the room and we had extremely positive feedback from MPs
and Peers who attended.
We particularly welcome the comments made by one of our speakers, John Bercow
MP, who recently reported on his independent review of children, young people,
speech, language and communication. John urged the Government to commit to
delivering measures which would ensure the effective provision of AAC services
and the support of the workforce. He further noted that his report acknowledged
that speech, language and communication needs continued beyond the age of 19
years and therefore the Government should endeavor to look at the needs of
adults, particularly during and post transition.
The final speech of the event was delivered by Peter Zein, who is an
independent AAC consultant, a No Voice, No Choice Steering Group Member and
someone who uses AAC himself. Peter reminded us that the lack of specific AAC
knowledge in health, education and social care results in poor or non
provision. He further discussed the acute need for policies in these
authorities on how best to meet the needs of adults who use AAC. Lastly, Peter
highlighted that best practice occurred when the voices of people who use AAC
where at the heart of these policies.
If you would like any more details of the No Voice, No Choice Campaign or would
like to download a copy of the report please go to: www.timetogetequal.org.uk/communication .
If
you would like to request a hard copy or an alternative format of the
new report please email us at communication.aids@... or by phone on

In March 2007 the UK Government signed the UN Convention on the ‘Rights of Persons
with Disabilities’. The
Convention is the first treaty in history to give the millions of disabled
people across the globe comprehensive human rights. The UK needs to ratify the Convention before it becomes legally binding. So
far, it has not done so. Please encourage the Prime Minister
to ratify the Convention without reservations - add your name to

Highly Specialist/Specialist SLT - Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service
We are looking for an SLT with experience in cleft lip and palate to work in the Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service. This is a single service based on two sites at Newcastle upon Tyne and Leeds. The postholder will be based at the Newcastle site, with some travel required across the northern part of the region.
You will provide a specialist service to children and adults with cleft lip and palate and non cleft velopharyngeal dysfunction, covering all aspects of cleft care including multidisciplinary team clinics, specialist investigations, specialist therapy interventions, second opinions and clinical audit. There will be opportunities to contribute to research projects and to the delivery of teaching packages.
The SLT cleft team is very well supported within the wider multidisciplinary cleft team at Newcastle, with good links to the service in Leeds. There are also close links with the Newcastle Paediatric SLT service, with support and supervision systems in place. There are opportunities for professional development both internally and externally and the team works within an ethos of continually monitoring and implementing best practice. Outreach work is an integral part of the post and a car driver is essential
Ideally you will have substantive general paediatric experience plus experience of working with cleft lip and palate/ velopharyngeal dysfunction within a multidisciplinary team setting. However applicants with less cleft experience would be considered and the post graded accordingly. This is an ideal opportunity to develop skills in SLT within cleft lip and palate.

This site has
useful information, a training database and an on-line self-evaluation anyone who
works with children, as part of the Government’s “Speech, Language
and Communication Framework” (SPLF).
“Talking Point is the first stop online for information on speech,
language and communication in children. Learning to speak is one of the most
important skills a child can learn, and yet we so often take for granted that a
child will naturally learn to speak, understand what we say and
communicate. Here you will find all the stages of language
development that a child will go through, lots of great tips, and, if you are
concerned about a child's development, what to do. In Talking Links you
can find lots of organisations that can help, including the local services
which can support your child's speech, language and communication development.”
Communication is a central skill for life. It is
vital that all those who work with children and young people have the right skills
and knowledge to promote speech, language and communication development in
children, are able to identify those experiencing difficulties and effectively
support children and young people with speech, language or communication
needs.
On Communication Help Point we will help you to:
·evaluate
your own skills and knowledge
·find
ways to develop your skills including relevant training courses
·find
answers to questions you have about developing your skills and
supporting children's communication
If this is your first visit to Communication Help Point, the
first step is to complete your personal profile.
You will then complete a self-evaluation of your skills, which will take
between 30-60 minutes for each stage.
