communication aid provision and support. “
Please will you pass this information on to
people of any age that use a communication aid, or their family members if this
is more appropriate.
You can find it and more information on the

it made it too big to go through Yahoo! email list - see link to download
reports) and notes below will be of
interest, and the link is given to the full reports. For AAC Network

Regards, Lynn
Using the framework of
the 'Every Child Matters' five outcomes for children, SPRU explored which
outcomes disabled children and their parents wish to achieve from service
provision. The full research report is now available. The findings from this
research were split into two, one summary describes the outcomes the
disabled children desired and the other looks at the parents' desired
outcomes:
Children It was found that
although disabled children aspired to the same sort of outcomes as
non-disabled children, the level of achievement expected, the way they were
prioritised and what the outcomes meant, differed significantly. Some
outcomes, e.g. physical and emotional well-being, communication and
safety, were seen as fundamental and needed to be addressed before the
others. Sometimes the goal was not progress but maintenance of an existing
situation. The conclusion of the research was that there is a need to
widen the definitions of key concepts within the ECM framework to take into
account the views and capabilities of disabled children.
Parents The desired outcomes of
parents focused on maintaining or enhancing their personal identity,
their physical and emotional well-being and their skill and knowledge base.
There was a need for a better balance between their caring and parenting
roles. Family-level outcomes were also desired: including maintaining
family life and ensuring the positive adjustment of siblings. Parents also
wanted to feel confident about the services they were using and to know that
professionals were working in partnership with them.

Several people have replied to my earlier email, asking for more
specific local information or leaflets that they could distribute. I
searched long and hard on the Nexus website but couldn’t find
anything. Disability North Information Service came to the rescue with a
link to this page on the Nexus website:
From here I found links to several other helpful pages as well as a
leaflet with an application form for a pass that seems to cover most things in
a more user friendly format:
145. - (1) Any person to whom a
current statutory travel concession permit has been issued by a travel
concession authority and who travels on an eligible service on a journey-
(a) between places in the authority's
area, and
(b) beginning at a relevant time, is
entitled, on production of the permit, to be provided with a half-price
travel concession by the operator of the service.
(2) A travel concession authority must,
on an application made to it by any person who appears to the authority to be
an elderly or disabled person residing in its area, issue to the person free
of charge a permit, in such form and for such period as the authority
considers appropriate, indicating that he is entitled to the concession
specified in subsection (1).

26. Included within this category are people who are
unable to communicate orally in any language. Those people will be:
unable to make clear basic oral requests e.g.
to ask for a particular destination or fare;
unable to ask specific questions to clarify
instructions e.g. "Does this bus go to the High Street?"
27. This category would not, in the Department's opinion,
cover people who are able to communicate orally but whose speech may be slow
or difficult to understand because, for example, of a severe stammer.
28. In considering an application on these grounds the
local authority may reasonably seek medical evidence to support the
application in appropriate cases.
Comments from Jean Fraser, North East LaryngectomeeTALK Club:
1. These
sections cover Laryngectomees, as they do not have ‘natural [using the human
larynx]’ speech but use [an ‘adjustment’] strategies to ensure that they can
be understood that others would not need to use to achieve
rehabilitated voice - in practical terms Laryngectomy voice cannot be heard
i.e. over a bus engine.
2. Servox,
voice prosthesis, oesophageal speech etc. come under that heading.
3. Please
note that bus drivers should not be asking/expecting Laryngectomees to state
their destination.
Many thanks to Jean Fraser, TALK Club, for bringing this important
information to our attention.
Jean represents NALC (National Association of Laryngectomee Clubs) to
the Disability Rights Commission. They have fought a long and hard
campaign to obtain extension of this entitlement to people with severe speech
problems.
The task now is to ensure that people without speech are aware of this
benefit. Jean asks if Speech and Language Therapists could please make
this information available to eligible patients.

Dear Colleague
Re: A national survey of speech language therapy provision for people
with Parkinson's disease: therapists' practices, patients' and carers'
perspectives
Apologies for any cross postings.
You may have noticed recently in the Bulletin (Issue 661, May 2007) an
article about the national survey we are conducting to find out about
what kinds of SLT provision there are for people with Parkinson's across
the UK and in the north of Ireland and what kind of issues arise around
communication and swallowing for people with Parkinson's and their
family.
We would like to invite you to take part in this important landmark
survey that will have a large bearing on the future of SLT services for
people with Parkinson's.
Even if you see people with Parkinson's only on an infrequent or
irregular basis, this survey is still for you, you still have important
views for us to hear.
The attached document gives you some more detail of exactly what we are
aiming for. Please take a moment to read it.
You will be able to link directly to the questionnaire from the links
below or cut and paste them to your computer.
The questionnaire for speech language therapists can be found by linking
to web address www.slt-survey.org.uk
You can also find links to the questionnaires via the RCSLT web site
www.rcslt.org/resources/parkinsons_research
and the Parkinson's Disease Society web site www.parkinson's.org.uk If

The work is supported by both the Parkinson's Disease Society and the
