ECDL - BASIC IT SKILLS TRAINING FOR ALL NHS STAFF
ECDL is a flexible, modular qualification designed to cover the key
concepts of IT and its practical application in the workplace. It I
estimated that a complete novice should be able to complete the whole
qualification in about 100 hours while those with some IT skills can
complete it in as few as 20 hours. The on-line learning programme
will be delivered by a consortium led by Spring IT Training and
including Learn ECDL, and NCC Education. The consortium is the
preferred supplier, selected by the NHS Information Authority, and
will offer a national tracking and monitoring service for ECDL
registrations and access to the learning and testing materials.

ECDL - FAQs FROM COMMUNITIES (eg. TRUSTS)
Do we have to be an Accredited Test Centre to Teach Staff? Do we have
to pay the BCS fee of £350? What do we have to do to become a test
centre? How do I contact the National Team? Will there be national
money to back fill staff time? Do we have to alter our network
configuration to run the software?
http://www.nhsia.nhs.uk/nhid/pages/programmes/ecdl/comm_faq.asp?om=m20

ECDL - NHS HOMEPAGE
The European Computer Driving Licence was established in 1988 by the
Finnish Computer Society and was quickly adopted as a National
Standard in IT competency in that country. During the early 1990's
the curriculum was developed and adopted by the EU member states as a
European Award. In 1996 the British Computer Society decided to
promote the ECDL within the UK and since that time the number of
people registering per year has grown to approximately 200,000 people
in the UK. Further information on ECDL ,access for NHS staff and
useful links.
http://www.nhsia.nhs.uk/nhid/pages/programmes/ecdl/

ECDL - NHS VOUCHER SCHEME
"There are over a million staff employed in the NHSA in England and
we want to be able to offer every NHS employee the opportunity to
gain the ECDL qualification. The voucher scheme is the entry point to
ECDL for all staff. The voucher scheme allows the individual to
assess their ability and need to embark on the qualification prior to
registering with the British Computer Society (BCS). It would be too
expensive and may devalue the qualification if we were to issue every
member of staff with a Log Book before establishing their commitment
to taking the qualification."
http://www.nhsia.nhs.uk/nhid/pages/programmes/ecdl/voucher_scheme.asp

ECDL - PROJECT UPDATE (JAN 2003) pdf file
Extract: "The Department of Health has set the following targets for
health communities within this year's advice as part of the financial
planning framework: • All person specifications must show a required
competence in the Basic IT Skills by March 2005; • On appointment all
NHS Staff must hold the ECDL or equivalent, or commit to gaining it
within 2 years from April 2003; • All NHS staff must have IT Skills
equivalent to the "Getting Started" and 40% of staff to have gained
the ECDL by March 2005; • All local health communities within each
StHA will have 2 fully accredited ECDL test centres by December
2003."

If you are using a telephone line to get on to the internet for email
and/or access to the "world wide web", it is important to protect
your computer against viruses and other nasty cyber-creatures!

(If your computer is part of a workplace network with it's own
server, maybe someone else is looking after internet security for
you.)

The links shown below are now on the slt-north site.
Click "Links" then "Tips and information about email lists and other
internet issues". There are many alternative solutions to the
problems noted, and you might already know of better ones. All the
programs listed have been recommended on www.pcforums.co.uk and I use
them myself. Believe me, if you get a virus on your computer once,
then you will not want to let it happen again :)

INTERNET EFFICIENCY: DOWNLOAD ACCELERATOR
Not free. But if you are thinking of downloading lots of things, it
will save you time, and if time is money, it will save you money :)

INTERNET SECURITY: MESSENGER SPAM BLOCKING
Free download to "Stop Messenger Spam" or see links on the "Stop
Messenger Spam" home page for instructions to change your computer
settings to block those pesky grey boxes!

INTERNET SECURITY: SPYWARE BLOCKING
Spywareblaster, free download. Block other internet users and
commercial websites from spying on you.

INTERNET SECURITY: SPYWARE CLEAN-UP
"Spybot Search and Destroy", free download. If you have not been
protecting your computer from Spyware, this program will clean it up
for you.

INTERNET SECURITY: STOP POPUPS AND MORE
Secure IE lets you block those irritating adverts that pop up all the
time. Also blocks some types of computer hacking and lets you open
multiple websites in one browser window. Not free, but safer than
Internet Explorer and said to compare favourably with Opera and
Netscape.

INTERNET SECURITY: VIRUS PROTECTION
AVG Anti-Virus Guard - Free Download. If you don't have virus
protection then sooner or later you WILL get a virus, either through
an email, from a website or simply through using Microsoft Outlook or
Internet Explorer.

by other security measures, you can download Zonealarm free.

If you visit the RCSLT website to view Bulletin or Bulletin
Supplement online, you will see a message telling you that that
section of the website is only accessible to RCSLT members and is
password protected. I contacted RCSLT as several members, myself
included, have requested a password to access the Bulletin section on
the RCSLT website and had no response.

There is a link on the RCSLT site to a form to request a password. If
you complete the form you should get an automatic message like this:

"Thank you for the password request.
At present (although this is going to change very soon) there is not
an awful lot that is actually "password-protected"). Currently,
certain sections, such as the Accreditation sections, the Overseas
sections etc., have a fixed password. These sections can be accessed
with "whyme". However, this is going to change soon (to a system
where every user has his/her own password), and when it does, you
will be informed via e-mail. Your next RCSLT membership card will
have a unique PIN number that will be used as your password. Thank
you for your interest."

However, this message has not been generated automatically every time
someone has applied for a password. I only received it when I emailed
RCSLT to say that I had asked for a password some time ago and had
had no response.

So, at the moment, it seems that these sections of the RCSLT website
are still accessible to both members and non-members and are not
password-protected.

The Bulletin Section of the website is here
http://www.rcslt.org/bulletin.shtml

Hope this is helpful.

Hi,

I am an undergraduate student taking my third and final year at York
University, studying for a BA (Hons) in Linguistics and English
Literature. I intend to apply for a Masters degree that would enable
me to qualify as a speech and language therapist. However, the
institutions offering these programmes expect relevant work
experience from prospective students. Would it be possible to
undertake some work experience with any speech therapy units out
there, and to offer my support in whatever way possible? I cannot
overstate how valuable this work experience would be.

I would completely understand if you felt that my presence might
interrupt your normal working practices.

If you require any further details about myself, as regards academic
background etc., please do not hesitate to contact me (by email if
possible, binnsalexander@y... )

Thanks!

Alex

I would be really grateful if you would speak to the local TALK group

I think that RCSLT web site has been great. I think my own profile
for a

leads/advice. With a bit of luck this e-mail group might do the same.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I saw this e-mail group advertised on the RCSLT student/wannabe
student web
site. I think it is probably aimed at students who are already
undergoing
training or people who are qualified SLT practitioners, but no harm in
putting my nose in anyway I hope!

I start my degree course in 2003. I have had offers from Sheffield,
Plymouth and Cardiff and I am waiting to hear from Reading. I have
the
following questions:

1. Has anyone studied at any of the above, or is anyone still
studying
there? Would you please let me know of any good/bad points regarding
any
aspect of student life at these places.

2. Is there anyone in the North East of England who would be kind
enough to let me do some voluntary work for them during the summer.
For me,
it would be great to just shadow someone. I was really lucky to get a
similar opportunity at the Carter Bequest in Middlesborough recently,
and
this has just made me more keen to do the same again. In return I
could
help out in other areas that might not be so popular (admin?
other?). I
know some posts require the Enhanced Disclosure clearance but I have
done
that. I am also doing some voluntary work at Sunderland hospital, 4
hours
on a Wednesday night (Head/Neck injury ward), but I have yet to meet
anyone
SLT oriented! I will consider any offers.

So, if you can give some insight into any of the Universities
mentioned
above or if you could make use of a keen wannabe SLT student during
the
summer, please reply.

Thanks,

Vicci

  Research Speech and Language Clinician

VOICE, SPEECH AND SWALLOWING PROBLEMS IN PARKINSON'S DISEASE:
PREVALENCE, NATURE AND PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPACT

The project:
Little detail is available on the precise prevalence of voice, speech
and swallowing problems in Parkinson's disease (PD). Furthermore
there exists a lack of information of the impact of any problems on
the life of the person with PD and their family. Without this our
understanding of how PD affects people and how to plan effective
support services for people with PD and their families remains
incomplete. This project funded by the British Parkinson's Disease
Society seeks to address this gap in a community-wide study of people
with Parkinson's Disease.

What does the post entail?:
You will carry out voice, speech and swallowing assessments with
people recruited to the project. These will include impairment level
assessments of these areas; complementary measurements of
intelligibility and perceptual aspects of speech and voice; and
evaluation of how any swallowing or communication problems limit
activities and restrict the life of individuals involved. A subgroup
of people will be followed up with more detailed interviews, which
you will conduct. You will assist in processing and evaluating data
gathered and in writing up reports and publications from the project.

What skills are needed?:
You must have experience in clinical assessment of communication
difficulties, preferably in individuals with acquired neurological
conditions. A speech-language therapy qualification is desirable, but
candidates with a background in clinical psychology, clinical
linguistics, nursing or other allied health profession will be
considered. Full training and ongoing expert support in all aspects
of the post will be available throughout from senior members of the
team. Some assessments and interviews may take place at people'
homes. For this reason it is desirable to hold a driving license.

Where and with whom will I be working?:
The research team is based in Sunderland Royal Hospital. You will be
a member of a multi-disciplinary group from the Department of Speech
and Regional Neuroscience Centre University of Newcastle/ Newcastle
General Hospital, and the School of Health, Community and Education
Studies, University of Northumbria. Other team members include a
neurologist, speech language therapist, physiotherapy researcher,
phonetician and statistician. The investigation is being conducted in
close liaison with complementary research into orthostatic
hypotension, risk factors for cognitive decline and the economic
burden of Parkinson's disease.

Off topic, but I thought other phonologicaltherapy members would be
interested in this creative use of a Yahoo! group:

SLT Vacancies Northern England Email Group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/slt-vacancies-northern/

"Information and enquiries about SLT services and vacancies in
Cumbria, Co.
Durham, Northumberland, Teesside and Tyne & Wear. Links to
information about
advertised posts, SLT services, employers, professional bodies, the
union
and, of course, The Beautiful North! "

I particularly like the "TEN TIPS" file.

The list owner is Liz Panton, who wrote to me:

"Dear Caroline,
I have just started this email list and site on behalf of the Northern
Regional Group of SLT Managers.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/slt-vacancies-northern/

There are lots of links on the site to information about employers
and the
area - with more to come.

If anyone wants to enquire about opportunities in Cumbria, County
Durham,
Northumberland, Teesside or Tyne & Wear, or wants receive information
about
vacancies, you can subscribe by visiting the site or emailing

slt-vacancies-northern-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

If you feel it would be appropriate, please post this information to
your
email list members.

Best wishes
