SILENCE IS THE LOUDEST VOICE- Breaking Barriers aims to raise awareness of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). The exhibition features photographs of disabled children from 27 families and most of the children cannot or could not speak previously.

The photographer Dawn Davies has created this exhibition to raise the profile of the VOCA communication aids (known as AAC) and to inform the families of disabled children and the public of what is available. The impact of the exhibition is already ring felt with several of the families involved obtaining AAC aids for their children and the aids are now featured in the County Durham Network Directory created by parents and professionals.

Dawn has never worked on a photography exhibition before this project but has been inspired to undertake a course in digital photography and would like to continue to raise the profile on issues that can improve the lives of disabled children. She also has a disabled son who uses a communication aid.
