Comments from Jean Fraser, North East Laryngectomee TALK Club:
1. These
sections cover Laryngectomees, as they do not have ‘natural [using the human
larynx]’ speech but use [an ‘adjustment’] strategies to ensure that they can
be understood that others would not need to use to achieve
rehabilitated voice - in practical terms Laryngectomy voice cannot be heard
i.e. over a bus engine.
2. Servox, voice prosthesis, oesophageal speech etc. come under that heading.
3. Please note that bus drivers should not be asking/expecting Laryngectomees to state their destination.
Many thanks to Jean Fraser, TALK Club, for bringing this important information to our attention.
Jean represents NALC (National Association of Laryngectomee Clubs) to the Disability Rights Commission. They have fought a long and hard campaign to obtain extension of this entitlement to people with severe speech problems.
The task now is to ensure that people without speech are aware of this benefit. Jean asks if Speech and Language Therapists could please make this information available to eligible patients.
