AUDIENCE
Video illustrations relate to adolescents or adults. However, the principles and strategies are useful to anyone working to improve interactive augmentative communication with students aged 11 and over.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
- Learn how to help communication aid users develop their interaction skills, using modelling, visual cueing, verbal cueing and shadow-light cueing.
- Learn about a specific framework for implementing interactive augmentative communication with adolescents and adults who are moderately/severely developmentally delayed and using a communication aid.
- Learn how to use conversational scripts relevant to daily routines to identify the vocabulary for interactive communication training.
- Learn how to translate these scripts to either word-based or sentence-based messages for communication aids.
- Learn how to use this language in conversation on communication aids of all types.
OUTCOMES
At the end of the day, you will be able to:
- Use four key techniques to help you when training someone to use a communication aid more effectively.
- Use a method of data collection to evaluate the facilitator and/or person using the communication aid.
- Use either single-meaning symbols or multi-meaning symbols to represent sentence-based or word-based messages for conversation.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Pam Elder is a Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in augmentative communication evaluation and treatment.
She is presently a full-time consultant in the Adult Services Program of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama.
Pam is the creator and managing director of the Southeast Augmentative Communication Conference. She managed the Southeast Augmentative Communication Publications since its creation 15 years ago.
Pam was instrumental in the establishment of the Great Britain based Liberator, Ltd., providing workshops in augmentative communication throughout England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
In her private practice she has provided AAC evaluations and consultations to numerous state and national agencies. She has co-authored a series of clinical books concerning her work in the field of augmentative and alternative communication and has lectured extensively on the topic to both national and international audiences.
