– a speech and language therapist to join our team at
The Secondary School is part of The Percy
Hedley Foundation of three schools for children with a range of special
educational needs. The schools exist to offer the highest quality education,
therapy and care to pupils with speech, language and communication difficulties
and those with cerebral palsy.
The caseload for this post will comprise
two classes of students at Key Stage 4 (age 14 -16) who have specific language
impairment, some of whom have an additional hearing impairment.
Therapists work as part of
multi-disciplinary teams which includes teachers, support staff,
physiotherapists, occupational therapists and an educational psychologist, all
of whom are employed by the school. Teaching and therapy is highly
collaborative and delivered in an integrated way.
There is a large team of specialist speech
and language therapists (11.9 w.t.e) across the Primary and Secondary schools
who are supported by two full time assistants. There is good support available
along with opportunities for continued professional development and training.
The post would suit an experienced
therapist who wishes to extend their skills in working within an educational
setting and with this complex client group. However, newly qualified therapists
are welcome to apply as supervision will be available.

Specialist Speech and
Language TherapisT
Role: Responsibility for the communication needs of a group of children with
specific language impairment.
Responsible to:
Head Speech and Language Therapist and Headteacher.
1.
Conditions of Employment
You are employed in the capacity of a therapist to carry out the duties
set out below.
2.
Therapy
Your responsibility in delivering therapy will be to work in an
integrated way in the Secondary Department. Your role will be with pupils
between the ages of 14 to 16 years.
3.
General Responsibilities
A therapist shall carry out the professional duties of a specialist in
accordance with the Codes of Practice laid down by their professional
body. A therapist employed in this school setting shall perform in
accordance with any directions that may reasonably be given by the Head Speech
and Language Therapist, Headteacher or Medical Director.
4.
Professional Requirements
1.
To be a state registered speech
and language therapist with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and a member
of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
2.
To have or develop a specialism in
relation to specific language impairment.
3.
To provide a specialist service to
a defined case-load within the school.
4.
To maintain standards and
guidelines as stipulated by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
(with reference to Communicating Quality 3)
5.
To share responsibility for your
own continued professional development through association with higher
education and other agencies.
6. To participate in an
effective programme of in-service Training and to attend post
qualification lectures and courses in order to increase knowledge and to
improve
professional standards.
As a therapist you will be expected
to:-
a)
Work collaboratively as part of an
integrated multi-disciplinary team and to promote the philosophy of a team
approach to communication and a shared responsibility for the agreed learning
goals.
b)
Develop a good working knowledge
of the school curriculum and implement communication targets in conjunction
with teachers and other staff through collaborative planning.
c)
Use professional skills to enhance
pupils’ access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
d)
Demonstrate effective planning and
preparation and provide support for colleagues so that each pupil maximises
their potential.
e)
Establish effective working
relationships with pupils, parents and the multi-professional staff team.
f)
Be responsible for managing your
own time appropriately.
g)
Be aware of and adhere to current
legislation and employer procedures and policies relating to the post e.g.
Moving and Handling, Child Protection, Health and Safety, Dysphagia management
etc.
h)
Attend case discussions, staff and
departmental meetings and other relevant meetings on an internal and external
basis.
i)
Participate in a performance
management scheme that will provide personal and professional development
opportunities with the intention of further raising the quality of therapy and
the standards of achievement of the pupils.
j)
Contribute to the School Development
and School Improvement Plans in relevant areas.
k)
Contribute to the review and
implementation of school policies.
l)
Develop more effective teaching
and learning strategies with colleagues. This may be through
participation in an action research approach to your work or the
development and implementation of other research projects for the benefit
of the school.
m)
Organise, supervise, train and
support students, volunteers, special support assistants and residential staff as
necessary.
5.
Therapy Responsibilities
You will be expected, where appropriate,
to:-
a) Monitor
and evaluate planning, therapy and learning for your area of responsibility,
providing support for colleagues.
b) Undertake
appropriate therapy management of pupils individually or within groups in a
variety of situations e.g. withdrawn from class, within class etc.
c) Lead
the class and co-ordinate the class team for specific speech, language and
communication related activities to access learning.
d) Collaborate
on the development of educational and therapeutic strategies to meet the needs
of individual pupils in order that they achieve their maximum potential.
e) To
advise on and implement knowledge of literacy development and skills
f)
Demonstrate effective therapy
organisation and management.
g) Develop
and maintain effective pupil assessment/recording schemes to meet the
requirements of their educational, therapeutic, care and social needs.
h) Contribute
to the writing of Individual Education Plans, Annual Review Reports and
Statements of Special Educational Needs.
i)
When required, to assist in the
development and implementation of training events for staff and external
applicants.
j)
Contribute to the development and
delivery of whole school Schemes of Work that support and integrate therapeutic
aims.
k) Contribute
to the audit and ordering of resources within the budget allocated for the
Therapy Departments.
l)
Liaise where appropriate with the
Medical Director and any other services that may be involved in promoting the
education, health and social development of pupils.
m) Work
in partnership with parents/carers for the purpose of giving advice and
practical help both at school and at the pupil's home.
n) Evaluate
therapy outcomes for individual pupils, review progress and make onward
referrals as necessary.
o) Act
as a consultant giving advice and assistance for the implementation of
effective communication strategies for pupils e.g. social communication
programmes, augmentative or alternative communication (signing, symbols, voice
output communication aids).
p) In
collaboration with teaching staff plan and provide an education/therapeutic
programme based on programmes of study for English, PHSE etc.
q) Undertake
any other duties appropriate to the grade of the post as directed by the Head Speech
and Language Therapist.
