Due to new funding and developments within the department an opportunity has arisen for an innovative therapist who will enjoy a challenge to take a new specialist post in the area of paediatric dysphagia.

You will be responsible for co-ordinating paediatric dysphagia services across the Trust. This will involve:

  • Establishing effective multi-agency links with local and tertiary hospital services
  • Developing links with Special Care Baby Unit and a service to high dependency children discharged into community care
  • Developing the role of Speech and Language Therapy in this field within the Trust
  • Developing links with videofluroscopy clinics
  • Developing policies and protocols in this area
  • Training and working with staff in the department through RCSLT competencies
  • Working alongside/supporting colleagues in the Special Schools and ALD service, offering joint visits and second opinions

    In addition you will be responsible for a small caseload of children with pre-school special needs.

    You will have a minimum of three years experience in this area and be familiar with current developments in this field.

With clinical leadership in: Community Paediatrics, Special Needs, Adult Learning Difficulties, Early Intervention and Adult Services our five integrated clinical teams enjoy established working partnerships with acute services, Social Services, the LEA and private sector.

Close links are maintained with Newcastle University and therapists have full access to library and R&D facilities within North Tyneside PCT and Northumbria Healthcare. Staff are invited to participate in lecturing on the pioneering BTEC course for Assistant Speech and Language Therapists, in conjunction with colleagues in Northumberland and Tynemouth College.

Membership of RCSLT and registered with the HPC is essential along with a current driving licence.

North Tyneside is situated on the coast in north east England, a few miles outside the city of Newcastle. The area is within easy reach of the natural beauty of rural Northumberland and has excellent transport links to the city centre and the rest of the region. The area enjoys good house prices and with an extensive choice of cultural and leisure pursuits on the doorstep, offers an excellent quality of life.

As this post involves contact with a vulnerable client group, it has also been designated as requiring ENHANCED Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau. This post is subject to the terms and conditions of the Scientific & Professional Whitley Council and the General Whitley Council.
