Guys, my friend Tony will be giving a presentation about HIV stigma at an LGBT health summit in a few weeks. Please see his email below and contact him directly if you can help him with some feedback. Also know that not everyone has faced stigma because they are HIV+, but many have.

Subject: HIV Stigma
From: Tony Valenzuela <tonyvalenzuela@...>
Date: Mon, August 03, 2009 10:01 am

Dear Bryan,

Thanks for posting this for me. This is what I want to ask the guys at SIN:

HIV stigma is something most HIV positive people have to deal with in their lives, even in big cities. It can take the form of language in online profiles (UB2, "dd free" (drug disease free), "clean"); it can appear in HIV prevention ads (like the recent campaigns that showed HIV positive men in diapers, with a bloated belly or facial wasting to scare neg men into safer sex); or it can take the form of the way people treat you once they know you're positive (they pity you, treat you like a "victim," wont' date you, etc.)

My question is not about what forms of HIV stigma you experience but, instead, how you combat HIV stigma in your own lives? For example, maybe you refuse to play the victim. Maybe you call people out on their ignorance when appropriate. Maybe you're out about your HIV status and are always matter of fact about it. Maybe you have a sense of humor about your HIV status. Maybe you embrace your sexuality, even as HIV positive. These are all ways that we might combat HIV stigma.

What are ways you combat HIV stigma in your own life?

I will be talking about anti-HIV stigma strategies at a conference in Chicago on August 15th. Your thoughts before then would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Tony Valenzuela

There are still spaces for the weekends of August 15/16 (open to all poz guys) and August 22/23 (focusing on sober poz guys in AA/12 Step). Our trips are partnered with the SF non-profit agency, Healing Waters, that raises money to organize low cost (or free) outdoor adventures for people living with HIV/AIDS and their friends.

If you want to get onto the remaining rafting trips, email me for forms and info. Spaces are based on the forms that are first received, and when spaces are full then we'll put you on a waiting list.

We'll be working with local poz groups to help them organize local outdoor adventures for poz guys all year long including rafting, camping, skiing, hiking, or adventure vacations like cruises.

Sex Positive documents the life of Richard Berkowitz, a gay hustler-turned-AIDS
activist. While other 1980s AIDS activists pushed for medical research and
government support, Berkowitz sent shock waves through the New York gay
community with his claim that the promiscuous gay lifestyle was to blame and
that gay men had to take personal responsibility for their actions. Despite
numerous public appearances and the publication of a groundbreaking book on safe
sex, his stance was considered too controversial, leading the community to
dismiss him as a self-hating gay man. Nearly 30 years later, director Daryl Wein
uses archival footage (much of it from Berkowitz's own collection) and
interviews to capture the untold story of the history of safe sex.

Vote "Yes" that the ban against HIV travelers to the US should be lifted! This is an online vote by MSNBC.com. Right now, the "No" vote is higher by 1/3. There are a lot of misinformed comments by those choosing "No", and I'm certain that our voices as HIV positive people are not being heard.

Dear Sir,

I am contacting you in your capacity as the owner of the Strength in Numbers Los Angeles group. I am currently undertaking research as part of an MSc degree within the Institute of Work, Health & Organisations (I-WHO), which is a postgraduate institute of applied psychology at the University of Nottingham, UK.

The overall purpose of the project is to investigate how the use of online support groups affects users’ feelings about themselves and their illness, and how this impacts on the doctor/patient relationship. More specifically it is concerned with if and how users become empowered, whether users feel comfortable using online information in consultations with healthcare professionals and whether using a support group has had any effect on the doctor - patient relationship.

I have designed a questionnaire to investigate this based on previous research findings in this area. I am contacting you to ask if you would be willing to post a link to the questionnaire on he forum for users to complete?

The link is:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=IRVMEmNUS4rAoUN_2b6QxcXg_3d_3d

It is mainly tick boxes with a few longer answer questions and it should take around 15 minutes to complete.

Participation in any stage of this research is completely voluntary for both moderators and users. All sites that post the link will be acknowledged in any publications and reports written. This study has received ethical approval from the I-WHO Ethics Committee.

If you have any questions regarding this research please either reply to this email or my address is lwxykb@....

Many thanks,

Kiera Bartlett

Guys, my good friend Ivana Poker (aka Marcos Bellet) is preparing to compete in one of the most famous and important HIV services fundraisers in the country in October. The annual Best In Drag Show contest in Los Angeles helps fund the local ASO called AID for AIDS, which gives immediate payments for critical bills like rent or phone for HIV+ people living in LA County.

As many of you know, California and Los Angeles are in the midst of the worst economic strain since the Great Depression and HIV funding has already been cut dramatically putting lives at risk. The Best In Drag Show raised $300,000 in just one night with the help of famous judges like Kathy Griffin, Marcia Cross, Martin Sheen and his son Charlie. But to get ready for the contest, each contestant is expected to raise their own funds to pay for their costumes and props so that those thousands of dollars are not taken from the money actually donated in the end. Ivana (Marcos) needs help in raising that money in order to help put on the best show possible and thereby help raise the most money possible by inspiring the crowd who donates directly at the theater that night.

Please take a moment to write out a check for whatever amount you can (even very small donations will help a lot) and mail them directly to Marcos. Know that I personally vouch for Marcos and the Best In Drag Show contest which is one of the best fundraisers in the nation, and AID for AIDS has one of the lost overhead rates for any agency in the nation as well.

Thank you guys! Your donations to Ivana will directly improve the lives of thousands of HIV+ people in need.

So, as many of you know, Marcos is going to appearing as "Ivana Poker" in the 2009 Best In Drag Show on Sunday, October 18. BIDS is a fundraiser for Aid for AIDS, a non-profit organization that helps to prevent homelessness and hunger and improves the quality of life and independent living for those living with HIV/AIDS (for more information about Aid for AIDS, please see below). Marcos and his small band of helpers will work tirelessly over the next three months to create an entertaining, fun and truly original character, Ivana Poker, Miss Nevada, who is a show girl from Sparks. However, Ivana has squandered all of her belongings in a weekend-long craps game and now needs your help.

In order to compete in BIDS, Ivana is required to appear in four costumes: the opening act, swim suit, talent and evening gown. Being that she gambled away everything she owns (including her hair and her little bunny that she uses in her magic act, Hoppy), we are turning to you for your assistance to help raise funds for costumes, wigs, props, bunny food and set designs. As Miss Poker's financial consultant, I have been charged with raising the estimated $5,000 needed to procure said items. As friends of Marcos, we hope that you can help us make Ivana Poker's pursuit for the tiara a reality and make a donation so that Marcos can put on the best show he can for this high-grossing fundraiser for Aid for AIDS.

If you can make a donation, please send a check payable to "Marcos Bellet" to:

711 Westmount Drive #205
West Hollywood, CA 90069

Please note that all donations will be used by Marcos solely for purposes of creating that fabulousness that is Ivana Poker and will not be donated to Aid for AIDS. Therefore, we cannot ensure that your donations will be tax deductible. However, Ivana has promised each donor a private show reminiscent of Elizabeth Berkley's pool scene in Showgirls. Any donations received in excess of those funds needed for costumes, wigs, props and set designs will be donated to Aid for AIDS.

Thank you so much in advance for your support. And we hope to see you at the Best In Drag Show on October 18.

The Agency

Founded more than 25 years ago by a small group of friends, Aid For AIDS (AFA), a resilient non-profit, has grown into the premier service provider of financial assistance and other support to persons living below the poverty line and disabled with HIV/AIDS in Los AngelesCounty.

AFA helps eligible individuals and families pay for the necessities of life: housing, utilities, transportation, nutritional supplements, medications not covered by insurance, and for those unable to transport items, the home delivery of fresh food. Assistance is intended as limited help, supplementing existing income or providing short-term emergency financial assistance pending receipt of other support, such as government benefits. Many dependent children currently live in AFA-assisted households, and over 60% of clients are persons of color. A consistent focus on careful management and integrity of purpose has enabled AFA to apply 90% of revenue to fund client programs. Since it's founding in 1983, AFA has touched the lives of more than 18,000 men, women, and children.

Staying ahead of today's dramatic challenges for non-profits and continuing a history of effective fiscal management, Aid For AIDS completed a merger in February of 2009 with The Serra Project. Serra has served the region for more than two decades by offering supportive services and housing to HIV/AIDS-impacted individuals and families. Their programs include group homes licensed as Residential Care Facilities for the Chronically Ill for those needing a high level of care, as well as rental units for permanent/supportive housing for those with mental health challenges or chemical dependency who are able to live outside of a group setting. The merged organization provides a broader continuum of care for those living with HIV/AIDS in Los AngelesCounty.

3 weekends during August, all low cost

Join other HIV+ guys and their friends for a weekend of rafting, camping and fun! More details in attachments. As happens most years, the trips start filling up about a month or so before the actual trip. We'll make sure we have waiting lists. If you are flying into the Bay Area, please plan on either flying out late on that Sunday night or just wait to leave early Monday morning. I can't guarantee what time we'll get back into SF from the river after we finish up on the river on each Sunday afternoon, nor how bad traffic will be getting back.

The first weekend has 2 full days of rafting and costs $120. The other 2 weekends have only 1 full day of rafting and cost $60. There can be financial aid available as well.

If you sent through your applications, please wait for me to contact you later tonight or let me know in a few days if I don't get back to you. Unfortunately I had my iPhone stolen from me last week and haven't been able to respond to everyone's voicemails. If you left a voicemail recently, please email instead so I can respond faster. But I do have my old cell phone working again. Thanks for your patience.

Hello there group

My name is Kim, I'm a 38 year old poz gay guy and I've just moved back to Vancouver from living in LA for the past couple of years and am trying to get involved in some active 'outdoors' and social groups in the poz community

I noticed that a Pos Peds groups had an activity last sunday that I missed - does anyone on this list have any contact for this group or know more about it - a bike group sounds like something i'd enjoy. Any information would be appreciated.

Also - I would be interested in any poz hiking groups. I did a bunch of hiking in LA and would love to keep that up. I find that a great way to meet people and be active at the same time - usually following the hike up with a brunch is a good end to a hike. anyway - I'd love to hear of any similar group or people interested in organizing that with me. I noticed an activity with the 'Suits' but i'd like to do something on a more regular basis

cheers
Kim

I sat down and wrote a brief paragraph for Tom. They are going to post a link on the Aquafest site. Tom and I have been chatting and he said that there is a good chunk of the Aqaufest clientele who are poz and might be interested in participating. At any rate, this might be a better paragraph then the one that went out the other day.

Join PozHouston on our first cruise vacation in January of 2010. Poz Houston is a social support network in Houston, Texas for HIV+ Gay men. We maintain a discussion forum website and help members plan formal and informal social activities each month. While we focus on the needs of gay HIV+ men, all are welcome to participate regardless of sex, sexual orientation or HIV status. Cruising is an exciting and relaxing way to get away and January is the perfect month to visit the Mexican Riviera and sparkling Roatan Island, Honduras. Join other Poz men from Houston, the Texas region, and the SIN Network as we cruise in fabulous style on the Voyager of the Seas. Voyager of the Seas is one of the top 10 ships in the world and will be fresh out of a December 2009 retrofit when we set sail. Featuring everything you can imagine from Ice Skating and Shows to a covered adults-only pool. Whether you want to make friends or just have buddies for adventure come join Poz Houston on our first cruise adventure.

About Tom Baker and Aquafest /CruiseCenter:

I am a 25 year travel industry veteran who owns a company called www.CruiseCenter.com in Houston, Texas. I was awarded the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler Award as "The World's Leading Large Ship Specialist." I along with two of my employees and colleagues started a GLBT division called Aquafest 8 years ago. We saw a need at the time to provide an affordable alternative to the expensive full ship charters. We have sailed with nearly 9,000 GLBT customers in 24 land and sea events! Our three annual events are advertised on www.AquafestCruises.com . We have evolved from a Halloween theme cruise with heavy entertainment and programming to offering successful land tour programs as well. We just returned from Egypt for 13-days with 25 travelers and are offering China in 2010.

Our key to success is to offer affordable options for all travelers. Needless to say, any true custom program requires an event fee to manage the process and to deploy it where it is successful and makes money. However, we keep prices very reasonable and this has helped Aquafest to be successful and rewarding for the participants.

I am also very mindful of offering charitable community support. Aquafest has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for these organizations:
 • The Houston Buyers Club-provides supplements for HIV clients
 • Aids Ride Houston
 • HRC-Houston Federal Club and major donor
 • Assist-Hers- a lesbian run group providing care to aging women
 • Susan G. Komen Foundation-Breast Cancer
 • Houston GLBT Community Center
My mantra as a businessman has to bring our community together (all genders) in public forums where we travel in a relaxed atmosphere along with the rest of the World to show them mass community that we are okay and not to be feared or hated due to our sexuality. We have actually done this quite successfully on our various travel events. By allowing guests to mingle, many travelers outside our genre are exposed to the GLBT community in a relaxed and sustained manner that allows us to be seen and heard. The positive results have far outnumbered the negative ones.
We have been fortunate to have press in many GLBT publications nationwide and now worldwide due to our unique take on the GLBT Event business.
Nonetheless, we also provide services for many groups within our community for all types of travelers and we are thrilled to invite Poz Houston and Brian on the Voyager of the Seas in January of 2010.
Thank you very much Bryan for your support and know I am here to assist at any time.
Happy 4th!
With warm regards,
Tom Baker

A policy that punishes people for being HIV-positive is close to being repealed.

But we need to make sure it actually happens.

<http://hrc.convio.net/site/R?i=o7K8XQSjuWNbv_jzlsuQ3A..>Help eliminate this
discriminatory policy once and for all!

It's one of the ugliest remnants of discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS
– hurtful, obsolete, and wrong.

A decades-old policy BANS nearly every foreign person with HIV from setting foot
on U.S. soil.

But that could change very soon. President Obama's Department of Health and
Human Services has finally proposed ending the ban. Starting today, the public
has 45 days to weigh in. And the right wing certainly will.

We need to show broad support for ending this discriminatory policy.

<http://hrc.convio.net/site/R?i=8-1fRZvBkQlNyEKtskcFGg..>We shouldn't punish
people for being HIV-positive! Help the Obama administration follow through and
end the ban.

This draconian ban tears apart families, denies American businesses access to
talented workers, and bars tourists from supporting our economy. It bans
students and researchers. It's the reason why the U.S. hasn't hosted a global
AIDS conference since 1990.

And it is just downright pointless. Leading doctors have opposed this policy for
decades because it has no benefit for public health.

In fact, the U.S. is one of only a handful of countries including Russia, Saudi
Arabia and Sudan that maintains such harsh policies. It's time we got with the
program.

Congress finally repealed the law a year ago, but only HHS can actually remove
HIV/AIDS from the list of diseases with travel restrictions. The Obama
administration has proposed the necessary change, but they need our help to get
it across the finish line.

<http://hrc.convio.net/site/R?i=ZqrcjwmXkpWFva2bBWq65g..>Take action now! Help
end the ban, once and for all.

Thank you for taking action. This hurtful policy has harmed HIV-positive people
for far too long, and with your help, we'll end it.

Warmly,

Joe Solmonese
President

Help us break the 1,000 member mark in just under a month from officially launching our new free social site for HIV+ gay men. Guys on SINMen have been creating their own local groups to help organize fun events faster. Profiles can be customized. It's a meeting ground for guys from all over the world.

If you are newly positive, this is a fantastic place to learn about how to really take care of your health and know that you are not alone in living with HIV. For guys who are long term survivors, it's the same thing too!

To help keep the site stay focused, please remember the following:
 • Do not post any X-rated erotic photos or videos
 • We're asking guys to limit photos to only 5 uploads (and that photos only feature the member)
 • If you make up a username, keep it fun and preferrably like a nickname
The goal of this site is to give poz guys a safe environment to meet each other without all the hard core sexual stuff and without being boring. Think of it as somewhere between Facebook and Manhunt with a little bit of Poz Personals thrown in.

Atlas highlights HIV/AIDS burden in Southeast

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/06/26/hiv.aids.atlas.map/index.html

By Elizabeth Landau
CNN

Enlarge font Enlarge font
(CNN) -- The Southeast is among the areas of the United States with the highest concentration of cases of HIV and AIDS, according to a new online tool called the National HIV/AIDS Atlas.
In this map of AIDS prevalence rates in the Southeast, red represents the highest (0.593 percent or greater).
In this map of AIDS prevalence rates in the Southeast, red represents the highest (0.593 percent or greater).
AIDS experts in the region say that access to health care, especially when it comes to screening, is a major problem in rural communities.
In the Southeast, people with HIV tend to get tested late, after they have become sick, partly because of stigma, said Kathie Hiers, executive director of AIDS Alabama in Birmingham.
"If you look at access to health care and almost any kind of health care report card, the South is the worst," she said.
With little or no public transportation, people in non-metropolitan areas are at a disadvantage when they need to see a particular kind of doctor, experts say. There is also a shortage of doctors who deal with HIV in the region, Hiers said.
These problems also resonate with Georgia's rural communities, which represent 39 percent of the HIV/AIDS burden in the state, said Raphael Holloway, director of the HIV Unit at the Georgia Division of Public Health. The remaining 61 percent of people living with HIV or AIDS are in the metro Atlanta area.
"In some districts, for example, there may be 10 counties within that health district but only one infectious disease doctor that people can access for care and services," he said.
It is also difficult to get HIV education to people in rural areas, he said.
Of the 29 states reporting county-level data for the National HIV/AIDS Atlas, Georgia had more counties than any other state with the highest levels of HIV and AIDS prevalence.
Although this does not represent a comprehensive national assessment, Georgia ranked fifth in reporting of new AIDS cases in 2007, behind Texas (fourth), Florida (third), New York (second) and California (first), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Northeast also has a heavy burden of HIV/AIDS cases nationally, atlas collaborators said. Other states with high numbers of counties with high HIV prevalence included Florida, New York and South Carolina.
The atlas, the first of its kind to map out HIV and AIDS at the level of counties, launched in time for Saturday's HIV/AIDS Testing Day. The National Institutes of Health is encouraging everyone age 13 to 64 to get tested for HIV as part of routine health care.
"Not knowing one's HIV status endangers one's health and the health of one's sexual partners. By getting tested for the virus and learning one's HIV status soon after infection, treatment can begin early, substantially delaying the development of HIV-related illness and prolonging life," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.
The National HIV/AIDS Atlas allows users to explore the prevalence of HIV and AIDS in any region of the United States. The map, a project of the National Minority Quality Forum, encompasses all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The more red a region appears, the greater the prevalence, which is the ratio of the number of people living with the disease at a given time to the total number of people living there at that time.
Users can look at rates of disease by gender, race/ethnicity and age group in regions where this information is available. The map also has different settings for HIV and AIDS, the more severe illness caused by the HIV virus. They can also zoom into counties and, for New York City only, ZIP codes.
About 33 million people have HIV/AIDS worldwide as of 2007, according to the World Health Organization. The CDC estimates that 1.1 million Americans have HIV and that 56,300 new infections occurred in the United States in 2006. Nearly 75 percent of HIV/AIDS diagnoses among adolescents and adults in that year were for males.
People who worked on the atlas project were surprised at how concentrated HIV and AIDS are in certain U.S. counties.
"Being able to look at all the data in this way reminds us that the HIV epidemic is not uniformly distributed throughout the U.S.," said Patrick Sullivan, associate professor of epidemiology at Emory University, who collaborated on the atlas.
The atlas also reflects the disproportionate number of African-Americans who have HIV and AIDS.
"You can see at the level of the national map that there's so much variation in the U.S. about which groups have been impacted," Sullivan said.
Demographics and county-level data are not available for some states, or parts of some states, because of the way these places report data by region, researchers said. These areas appear as gray when users zoom in. Some places also appear gray because the disease case count is so low.
The atlas is based on data from public health departments from 2006, the most recent available. Collaborators say they hope to update the maps when new data become available.
The atlas, which launched Monday morning, had about 100,000 visitors by Tuesday afternoon, and more than 10,000 people completed the free registration in that time, said Gary Puckrein, executive director of the atlas project.

Question Regarding Assistance with Research Study

Message

Dear Strength in Numbers Representative,

My name is Samantha L. Tornello and I am currently working on a research project with Dr. Charlotte J. Patterson at the University of Virginia to study families headed by gay/bisexual fathers. I am contacting you to ask if we could advertise our study to your email list, website, and/or newsletter. The study consists of an online survey and will take approximately 25- 35 minutes of each participant's time. To qualify for the study the participant would have to identify as male, a father, and gay, bisexual or homosexual and have at least one child of any age; this child can be biological, adopted, foster, step, or other child. A man does not need to be the child's legal parent to participate. This study has been approved by the University of Virginia IRB #2008-0407-00. The listing which has been approved for distribution is below (attached) for your review.

If you have any questions or need further information please contact Samantha L. Tornello at GayDadsStudy@... or at (434) 243-8558.

If you have received this message in error, I greatly apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your time. Sincerely,
Samantha L. Tornello, M.A.

Are you a gay/bisexual dad? Would you be willing to answer some confidential questions about your life and about your family? The purpose of this study is to examine the many ways families headed by gay fathers have been created, explore how families function, and learn about the relationship between partners. The study consists of an online survey and will take approximately 25- 35 minutes of your time. To qualify for the study you have to identify as male, a father, and gay, bisexual or homosexual and have at least one child of any age; this child can be biological, adopted, foster, step, or other child. You do not need to be the child's legal parent to participate.

This study has been approved by the University of Virginia IRB #20 08-0407-00, and I am working with Dr. Charlotte J. Patterson who is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. If you and/or your partner are interested in participating or want further information please contact Samantha L. Tornello (Principal Investigator) via email GayDadsStudy@.... She will send you a web link that you can use to access the study. Thank you for your interest and I hope to hear about your family soon! Sincerely, Samantha

We've had a great response to our FREE and easy to use social site for poz gay men, SINMen.net

A key feature about our site is that, like Strength In Numbers groups in general, it's focused on actually connecting with other poz guys for friendship and dating. We're encouraging guys to post photos of their face (the one above their neck) or at least include their real first name. No sexually graphic photos or videos are allowed, we're more Facebook than Manhunt. Last week alone over 400 guys signed up!

June Shows
======================================================================

Hey Members,

HIV is a completely different condition then it was a few years ago.
In 2009 an HIV+ diagnosis does not mean a decline in health , as they
once did. In fact there are bright futures for people newly diagnosed
with the virus..things get better with every passing year.

You might know a little bit about HIV/AIDS or even know someone who is
HIV+. You might be somewhat knowledgeable about the virus and you
might be less concerned about your future. Instead you may be more
concerned about other people in your life, people close to you , those
who may be less informed then you are. Maybe How a partner
,spouse, parents, family members, or friends will respond to the news.
For now it is more important to focus on taking care of yourself.
Testing HIV+ can be a scary thing. It was for me. People respond to
their diagnosis in different ways.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS ...PEOPLE WITH HIV CAN LIVE A FULL LIFE AND LIVE A
NORMAL LIFE EXPECTANCY IF THEY DO THE RIGHT THINGS

HAVING HIV MEANS MANY THINGS

* Having HIV does not mean you have AIDS.
* You can continue to have an active and full life.
* You might not need medication for many years.
* HIV medication is good now and gets better every year.

BY FINDING OUT YOUR HIV STATUS YOU'RE ALREADY TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR
HEALTH

In hopes of Inspiring,
Robert

Mark Olmsted - HIV+ and Prison

Wednesday June 3rd at 2pm EST Mark Omsted
will share his story with POZ I AM Radio .Mark Olmsted is a long-term
survivor who dates his seroconversion from New York
in the early 80s, where he also graduated from NYU with a degree in
film. In
1989 he moved to the West Coast, where he took care of his brother,
who died of
AIDS in 1991. Mark was diagnosed with full-blown AIDS in 1993, and
lived for
the next several years with the assumption they were his last, as he
pursued a
screenwriting career . He developed a crystal meth habit, which in
turn led to
drug-dealing to support his addiction. In 2004, he was arrested, and
spent 9
months in various California prisons. While incarcerated, his sister
offered to
start a blog documenting his life as an out HIV+ inmate, a blog which
he
continued upon his release. He recently celebrated 4 years of

Nina Martinez - Shares her Story

Sunday June 7th AT 9pm EST Nina Martinez
shares her amazing story with POZ I AM Radio . Nina's premature birth
in San Jose, California facilitated the need for a blood transfusion
that infected her with the HIV virus in 1983. However, it was 1991
before her infection came to light during an accidental preoperative
test; she was eight years old. This discovery began an investigation
into the U.S.Department of Defense, which had known of her donor's
HIV-positive status two years before her diagnosis. Prompted by her
case, the Department of Defense's "Blood Look Back" program now
requires a practice of case non-closure if a blood recipient cannot be
immediately located. Nearly twenty-six years after her infection, Nina
holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and government from
Georgetown
University in Washington, DC, and she is a candidate for the Master of
Science in Public Health in the summer of 2009 from Emory University
in
Atlanta.

Anthony Bongiorno - The Friends of AIDS Foundation

Sunday June 29th at 9pm EST Anthony Bongiorno the President of The
Friends of AIDS Foundation will share his story. During the
1990’s, Anthony was involved in the drug scene and as a result,
found himself picking up several cases. He continued to struggle with
the whole drug lifestlye for many years until he met his soon to be
wife in 2003.
They married and he began to clean up his legal wreckage from the past
and was ordered to do time. He took a short leave of absence from
work. While away, his wife had an extra-marital affair and contracted
the HIV virus.
Upon his return home, the virus was transmitted to Anthony and their
relationship became strained. The following year she committed suicide
and Anthony was now alone.
His personal interest is to create a positive impact that will change
the future course of the pandemic by helping to develop healthy
futures for communities impacted by HIV/AIDS. It is his goal to help
bridge the gap for those impacted by thisdisease by delivering
innovative programs that enhance the quality of life for HIV positive
individuals and cutting edge programs that empower people to make
healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV virus. His motto is
“Together We Remain Strong!”

Here's a great message from one of the co-managers of Strength In
Numbers - New York City. Chris sums up one of the main goals of SIN, to
get poz guys involved in their own community planning their own events
whenever and wherever possible. When the AIDS crisis first started,
HIV+ gay men banded together in cities all over the US and beyond to
organize social events so they could support each other during a time of
great fear and stigma. Over time, the non-profit agencies created to
respond to AIDS then took on running some of these events, but over time
the agencies treated these social events more like clinical "programs"
and frankly the events stopped being fun.

There's a number of factors facing us all in the HIV community today.
One, funding for HIV services have been or will be cut dramatically over
the next few years, first because of the previous Administration and now
because of the worst economy seen since the Great Depression. Second,
treating social events like yet another clinical service to be provided
by a bureaucratic professional entity like a large local AIDS service
organization is not effective, since we usually feel like we are being
treated like a number or patient rather than being treated like a friend
or even a human being at times. Lastly, the innovative tools that are
available via the Internet these days make it much easier for regular
folks to organize events quickly and effectively without the need of a
central physical office, paid staff or restrictions to satisfy federal
or grant funding.

Simply put, if poz guys anywhere want to have social support, to develop
more friendships with other gay men who fully understand what it means
to live and thrive with HIV, rather than feel isolated and unsure about
our health status, then the responsibility to plan social events or
create social spaces is in our hands. Chris, David and the other active
members of SIN New York City have shown that the steps that Chris wrote
out do work incredibly well. SIN NYC has over 1500 members and a
diverse schedule of events all week long.

That said, your social group can prove to be just as effective by simply
meeting at someone's house for a private potluck or going to a movie
together if even just once a month. Such an event, a chance to meet
other HIV+ gay men, could literally change the life of a guy who thinks
that he's completely alone, unwanted, stigmatized. Trust me, by helping
get more events going in your local HIV community, you will not just
help others but you will be changing your own life for the better with
just a few hours a month. Thanks to Chris for this great message.

Have a great Memorial Day and celebrate it by kissing a sailor...or a
soldier...or a Marine, heck even the Coast Guard!

Chris' Message about organizing events:

Hi guys,

I want to respond to this email because this is one consistent
request and comment that is sent to the group: "can we have more
affordable events". SIN is unique that it is a social group that
is totally run by its members. No one is paid, there are no
committees, and we do not vote on or organize any specific event.
We are fortunate in NY to have so many people that have stepped
up to organize inexpensive afternoon outings to more extensive
overnight weekend get a ways in other cities. Every person has
dedicated their own time to organize the event and make it a
success. So the answer is yes we can and will have more of the
affordable events, but it takes participation and people to
organize the events. If you have an idea of an event here are
some steps that will help you to pull it together.

 1. Choose an event

 2. Pick a date

 3. Post a poll to gage the interest (everyone has access to
the poll on the Yahoo Site, and if you need help let m know).

 4. Pick a place to meet.

 5. Send out an announcement with details

 6. Post event on calendar

The success of the SIN is based on the participation and the
effort that everyone puts into the group. So get busy, think of
events, post a poll, and get active. We can have as many events
as there are people to organize events.

 Have a great summer!

 Chris
