Help us break the 1,000 member mark in just under a month from officially launching our new free social site for HIV+ gay men. Guys on SINMen have been creating their own local groups to help organize fun events faster. Profiles can be customized. It's a meeting ground for guys from all over the world.

If you are newly positive, this is a fantastic place to learn about how to really take care of your health and know that you are not alone in living with HIV. For guys who are long term survivors, it's the same thing too!

To help keep the site stay focused, please remember the following:
 • Do not post any X-rated erotic photos or videos
 • We're asking guys to limit photos to only 5 uploads (and that photos only feature the member)
 • If you make up a username, keep it fun and preferrably like a nickname
The goal of this site is to give poz guys a safe environment to meet each other without all the hard core sexual stuff and without being boring. Think of it as somewhere between Facebook and Manhunt with a little bit of Poz Personals thrown in.

Atlas highlights HIV/AIDS burden in Southeast

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/06/26/hiv.aids.atlas.map/index.html

By Elizabeth Landau

(CNN) -- The Southeast is among the areas of the United States with the highest concentration of cases of HIV and AIDS, according to a new online tool called the National HIV/AIDS Atlas.
In this map of AIDS prevalence rates in the Southeast, red represents the highest (0.593 percent or greater).
In this map of AIDS prevalence rates in the Southeast, red represents the highest (0.593 percent or greater).
AIDS experts in the region say that access to health care, especially when it comes to screening, is a major problem in rural communities.
In the Southeast, people with HIV tend to get tested late, after they have become sick, partly because of stigma, said Kathie Hiers, executive director of AIDS Alabama in Birmingham.
"If you look at access to health care and almost any kind of health care report card, the South is the worst," she said.
With little or no public transportation, people in non-metropolitan areas are at a disadvantage when they need to see a particular kind of doctor, experts say. There is also a shortage of doctors who deal with HIV in the region, Hiers said.
These problems also resonate with Georgia's rural communities, which represent 39 percent of the HIV/AIDS burden in the state, said Raphael Holloway, director of the HIV Unit at the Georgia Division of Public Health. The remaining 61 percent of people living with HIV or AIDS are in the metro Atlanta area.
"In some districts, for example, there may be 10 counties within that health district but only one infectious disease doctor that people can access for care and services," he said.
It is also difficult to get HIV education to people in rural areas, he said.
Of the 29 states reporting county-level data for the National HIV/AIDS Atlas, Georgia had more counties than any other state with the highest levels of HIV and AIDS prevalence.
Although this does not represent a comprehensive national assessment, Georgia ranked fifth in reporting of new AIDS cases in 2007, behind Texas (fourth), Florida (third), New York (second) and California (first), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Northeast also has a heavy burden of HIV/AIDS cases nationally, atlas collaborators said. Other states with high numbers of counties with high HIV prevalence included Florida, New York and South Carolina.
The atlas, the first of its kind to map out HIV and AIDS at the level of counties, launched in time for Saturday's HIV/AIDS Testing Day. The National Institutes of Health is encouraging everyone age 13 to 64 to get tested for HIV as part of routine health care.
"Not knowing one's HIV status endangers one's health and the health of one's sexual partners. By getting tested for the virus and learning one's HIV status soon after infection, treatment can begin early, substantially delaying the development of HIV-related illness and prolonging life," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.
The National HIV/AIDS Atlas allows users to explore the prevalence of HIV and AIDS in any region of the United States. The map, a project of the National Minority Quality Forum, encompasses all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The more red a region appears, the greater the prevalence, which is the ratio of the number of people living with the disease at a given time to the total number of people living there at that time.
Users can look at rates of disease by gender, race/ethnicity and age group in regions where this information is available. The map also has different settings for HIV and AIDS, the more severe illness caused by the HIV virus. They can also zoom into counties and, for New York City only, ZIP codes.
About 33 million people have HIV/AIDS worldwide as of 2007, according to the World Health Organization. The CDC estimates that 1.1 million Americans have HIV and that 56,300 new infections occurred in the United States in 2006. Nearly 75 percent of HIV/AIDS diagnoses among adolescents and adults in that year were for males.
People who worked on the atlas project were surprised at how concentrated HIV and AIDS are in certain U.S. counties.
"Being able to look at all the data in this way reminds us that the HIV epidemic is not uniformly distributed throughout the U.S.," said Patrick Sullivan, associate professor of epidemiology at Emory University, who collaborated on the atlas.
The atlas also reflects the disproportionate number of African-Americans who have HIV and AIDS.
"You can see at the level of the national map that there's so much variation in the U.S. about which groups have been impacted," Sullivan said.
Demographics and county-level data are not available for some states, or parts of some states, because of the way these places report data by region, researchers said. These areas appear as gray when users zoom in. Some places also appear gray because the disease case count is so low.
The atlas is based on data from public health departments from 2006, the most recent available. Collaborators say they hope to update the maps when new data become available.
The atlas, which launched Monday morning, had about 100,000 visitors by Tuesday afternoon, and more than 10,000 people completed the free registration in that time, said Gary Puckrein, executive director of the atlas project.

Question Regarding Assistance with Research Study

Message

Dear Strength in Numbers Representative,

My name is Samantha L. Tornello and I am currently working on a research project with Dr. Charlotte J. Patterson at the University of Virginia to study families headed by gay/bisexual fathers. I am contacting you to ask if we could advertise our study to your email list, website, and/or newsletter. The study consists of an online survey and will take approximately 25- 35 minutes of each participant's time. To qualify for the study the participant would have to identify as male, a father, and gay, bisexual or homosexual and have at least one child of any age; this child can be biological, adopted, foster, step, or other child. A man does not need to be the child's legal parent to participate. This study has been approved by the University of Virginia IRB #2008-0407-00. The listing which has been approved for distribution is below (attached) for your review.

If you have any questions or need further information please contact Samantha L. Tornello at GayDadsStudy@... or at (434) 243-8558.

If you have received this message in error, I greatly apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your time. Sincerely,
Samantha L. Tornello, M.A.
University of Virginia
Graduate Student

Are you a gay/bisexual dad? Would you be willing to answer some confidential questions about your life and about your family? The purpose of this study is to examine the many ways families headed by gay fathers have been created, explore how families function, and learn about the relationship between partners. The study consists of an online survey and will take approximately 25- 35 minutes of your time. To qualify for the study you have to identify as male, a father, and gay, bisexual or homosexual and have at least one child of any age; this child can be biological, adopted, foster, step, or other child. You do not need to be the child's legal parent to participate.

This study has been approved by the University of Virginia IRB #20 08-0407-00, and I am working with Dr. Charlotte J. Patterson who is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. If you and/or your partner are interested in participating or want further information please contact Samantha L. Tornello (Principal Investigator) via email GayDadsStudy@.... She will send you a web link that you can use to access the study. Thank you for your interest and I hope to hear about your family soon! Sincerely, Samantha

We've had a great response to our FREE and easy to use social site for poz gay men, SINMen.net

A key feature about our site is that, like Strength In Numbers groups in general, it's focused on actually connecting with other poz guys for friendship and dating. We're encouraging guys to post photos of their face (the one above their neck) or at least include their real first name. No sexually graphic photos or videos are allowed, we're more Facebook than Manhunt. Last week alone over 400 guys signed up!

OK, I am sure that by now some guys are overwhelmed with the number of social networking sites popping up everyday. Facebook, MySpace, LinkenIn, 3LeggedMenUnited (that one is just a joke). But wouldn't it be great if there was a place just for HIV+ gay men to meet each other, post personal profiles of themselves including their photo, and communicate with each other directly right away? Guess what, there is now!

We've made sure that SINMen.net is FREE, private and is easy to navigate. There's hundreds of cool applications and some stylish background themes available to add dynamic flair to your personal page. Why settle for stuffy old style online dating websites? Want a fun and healthy environment to meet other guys without the graphic images of hookup sites? We've got it!

This is our space for poz guys to make new friends and build a larger international community for Strength In Numbers.

June Shows
======================================================================

Hey Members,

HIV is a completely different condition then it was a few years ago.
In 2009 an HIV+ diagnosis does not mean a decline in health , as they
once did. In fact there are bright futures for people newly diagnosed
with the virus..things get better with every passing year.

You might know a little bit about HIV/AIDS or even know someone who is
HIV+. You might be somewhat knowledgeable about the virus and you
might be less concerned about your future. Instead you may be more
concerned about other people in your life, people close to you , those
who may be less informed then you are. Maybe How a partner
,spouse, parents, family members, or friends will respond to the news.
For now it is more important to focus on taking care of yourself.
Testing HIV+ can be a scary thing. It was for me. People respond to
their diagnosis in different ways.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS ...PEOPLE WITH HIV CAN LIVE A FULL LIFE AND LIVE A
NORMAL LIFE EXPECTANCY IF THEY DO THE RIGHT THINGS

HAVING HIV MEANS MANY THINGS

* Having HIV does not mean you have AIDS.
* You can continue to have an active and full life.
* You might not need medication for many years.
* HIV medication is good now and gets better every year.

BY FINDING OUT YOUR HIV STATUS YOU'RE ALREADY TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR
HEALTH

In hopes of Inspiring,
Robert

Mark Olmsted - HIV+ and Prison

Wednesday June 3rd at 2pm EST Mark Omsted
will share his story with POZ I AM Radio .Mark Olmsted is a long-term
survivor who dates his seroconversion from New York
in the early 80s, where he also graduated from NYU with a degree in
film. In
1989 he moved to the West Coast, where he took care of his brother,
who died of
AIDS in 1991. Mark was diagnosed with full-blown AIDS in 1993, and
lived for
the next several years with the assumption they were his last, as he
pursued a
screenwriting career . He developed a crystal meth habit, which in
turn led to
drug-dealing to support his addiction. In 2004, he was arrested, and
spent 9
months in various California prisons. While incarcerated, his sister
offered to
start a blog documenting his life as an out HIV+ inmate, a blog which
he
continued upon his release. He recently celebrated 4 years of
sobriety.

Nina Martinez - Shares her Story

Sunday June 7th AT 9pm EST Nina Martinez
shares her amazing story with POZ I AM Radio . Nina's premature birth
in San Jose, California facilitated the need for a blood transfusion
that infected her with the HIV virus in 1983. However, it was 1991
before her infection came to light during an accidental preoperative
test; she was eight years old. This discovery began an investigation
into the U.S.Department of Defense, which had known of her donor's
HIV-positive status two years before her diagnosis. Prompted by her
case, the Department of Defense's "Blood Look Back" program now
requires a practice of case non-closure if a blood recipient cannot be
immediately located. Nearly twenty-six years after her infection, Nina
holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and government from
Georgetown
University in Washington, DC, and she is a candidate for the Master of
Science in Public Health in the summer of 2009 from Emory University
in
Atlanta.

Marvelyn Brown - The Naked Truth

Wednesday June 24th at 2pm EST Marvelyn Brown Shares her story and
will talk about her autobiography "The Naked Truth". Marvelyn Brown is
an Emmy Award winning AIDS Acticist and has even appeared on Oprah and
MTV and many other tv shows.
The surprisingly hopeful story of how a straight, nonpromiscuous,
everyday girl contracted HIV and how she manages to stay upbeat,
inspired, and more positive about life than ever before. At nineteen
years of age, Marvelyn Brown was lying in a stark white hospital bed
at Tennessee Christian Medical Center, feeling hopeless. A former top
track and basketball athlete, she was in the best shape of her life,
but she was battling a sudden illness in the intensive care unit.
Doctors had no idea what was going on. It never occurred to Brown that
she might be HIV positive. Having unprotected sex with her Prince
Charming had set into swift motion a set of circumstances that not
only landed her in the fight of her life, but also alienated her from
her community. Rather than give up, however, Brown found a reason to
fight and a reason to live.
The Naked Truth is an inspirational memoir that shares how an everyday
teen refused to give up on herself, even as others would forsake her.
More, it's a cautionary tale that every parent, guidance counselor,
and young adult should read.

Anthony Bongiorno - The Friends of AIDS Foundation

Sunday June 29th at 9pm EST Anthony Bongiorno the President of The
Friends of AIDS Foundation will share his story. During the
1990’s, Anthony was involved in the drug scene and as a result,
found himself picking up several cases. He continued to struggle with
the whole drug lifestlye for many years until he met his soon to be
wife in 2003.
They married and he began to clean up his legal wreckage from the past
and was ordered to do time. He took a short leave of absence from
work. While away, his wife had an extra-marital affair and contracted
the HIV virus.
Upon his return home, the virus was transmitted to Anthony and their
relationship became strained. The following year she committed suicide
and Anthony was now alone.
His personal interest is to create a positive impact that will change
the future course of the pandemic by helping to develop healthy
futures for communities impacted by HIV/AIDS. It is his goal to help
bridge the gap for those impacted by thisdisease by delivering
innovative programs that enhance the quality of life for HIV positive
individuals and cutting edge programs that empower people to make
healthy choices to prevent the spread of the HIV virus. His motto is
“Together We Remain Strong!”

Here's a great message from one of the co-managers of Strength In
Numbers - New York City. Chris sums up one of the main goals of SIN, to
get poz guys involved in their own community planning their own events
whenever and wherever possible. When the AIDS crisis first started,
HIV+ gay men banded together in cities all over the US and beyond to
organize social events so they could support each other during a time of
great fear and stigma. Over time, the non-profit agencies created to
respond to AIDS then took on running some of these events, but over time
the agencies treated these social events more like clinical "programs"
and frankly the events stopped being fun.

There's a number of factors facing us all in the HIV community today.
One, funding for HIV services have been or will be cut dramatically over
the next few years, first because of the previous Administration and now
because of the worst economy seen since the Great Depression. Second,
treating social events like yet another clinical service to be provided
by a bureaucratic professional entity like a large local AIDS service
organization is not effective, since we usually feel like we are being
treated like a number or patient rather than being treated like a friend
or even a human being at times. Lastly, the innovative tools that are
available via the Internet these days make it much easier for regular
folks to organize events quickly and effectively without the need of a
central physical office, paid staff or restrictions to satisfy federal
or grant funding.

Simply put, if poz guys anywhere want to have social support, to develop
more friendships with other gay men who fully understand what it means
to live and thrive with HIV, rather than feel isolated and unsure about
our health status, then the responsibility to plan social events or
create social spaces is in our hands. Chris, David and the other active
members of SIN New York City have shown that the steps that Chris wrote
out do work incredibly well. SIN NYC has over 1500 members and a
diverse schedule of events all week long.

That said, your social group can prove to be just as effective by simply
meeting at someone's house for a private potluck or going to a movie
together if even just once a month. Such an event, a chance to meet
other HIV+ gay men, could literally change the life of a guy who thinks
that he's completely alone, unwanted, stigmatized. Trust me, by helping
get more events going in your local HIV community, you will not just
help others but you will be changing your own life for the better with
just a few hours a month. Thanks to Chris for this great message.

Have a great Memorial Day and celebrate it by kissing a sailor...or a
soldier...or a Marine, heck even the Coast Guard!

Founder, SIN

Chris' Message about organizing events:

Hi guys,

I want to respond to this email because this is one consistent
request and comment that is sent to the group: "can we have more
affordable events". SIN is unique that it is a social group that
is totally run by its members. No one is paid, there are no
committees, and we do not vote on or organize any specific event.
We are fortunate in NY to have so many people that have stepped
up to organize inexpensive afternoon outings to more extensive
overnight weekend get a ways in other cities. Every person has
dedicated their own time to organize the event and make it a
success. So the answer is yes we can and will have more of the
affordable events, but it takes participation and people to
organize the events. If you have an idea of an event here are
some steps that will help you to pull it together.

 1. Choose an event

 2. Pick a date

 3. Post a poll to gage the interest (everyone has access to
the poll on the Yahoo Site, and if you need help let m know).

 4. Pick a place to meet.

 5. Send out an announcement with details

 6. Post event on calendar

The success of the SIN is based on the participation and the
effort that everyone puts into the group. So get busy, think of
events, post a poll, and get active. We can have as many events
as there are people to organize events.

 Have a great summer!

 Chris

Obama Seeks a Global Health Plan Broader Than Bush's AIDS Effort By
SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

WASHINGTON - President Obama asked Congress on Tuesday to spend $63
billion over the next six years on a new, broader global health strategy
that would reshape one of the signature foreign policy efforts of his
predecessor, George W. Bush.

Mr. Bush made combating global AIDS a centerpiece of his foreign agenda.
The program he created - the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief,
or Pepfar - is regarded as one of his most significant achievements. But
the plan Mr. Obama outlined Tuesday envisions a more far-reaching
approach to global health that would focus not only on AIDS, but also on
tropical diseases and other treatable and preventable illnesses that
kill millions, many of them children, each year.

"We cannot simply confront individual preventable illnesses in
isolation," the president said in a statement released by the White
House that cited the swine flu outbreak as an example. "The world is
interconnected, and that demands an integrated approach to global
health."

In announcing the request, the White House said Mr. Obama was seeking
$51 billion to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria during the six years
and $12 billion for other global health priorities. His budget proposal
calls for $7.4 billion for AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in 2010, an
increase of $366 million over this year.

But as a candidate, Mr. Obama promised to expand Pepfar "by $1 billion a
year in new money over the next five years" and said that he would
provide "$50 billion" by 2013 to fight the pandemic." The White House
said Tuesday that Mr. Obama would meet the $50 billion goal, but over
six years instead of five. The White House did not provide additional
specifics on how the money would be spent in future years.

"We continue to support Pepfar," Deputy Secretary of State Jack Lew
said. "We're saying we want to take what we know works and expand it
because we can make a big difference in the world."
But some AIDS advocacy groups were furious on Tuesday and accused Mr.
Obama of breaking his promise. Officials at the Infectious Diseases
Society of America, which represents infectious disease specialists,
called the increase "meager" and said poor countries were cutting back
on their health budgets because of the worldwide economic crisis.

"They are expanding the mandate, but not expanding the pie," said Dr.
Paul Zeitz, executive director of the Global AIDS Alliance, a
Washington-based advocacy group. "To me, this is a betrayal of trust."
But Mr. Obama's plan drew praise from Bono, the rock star and
antipoverty advocate. "Today, ‘Doctor Obama' leads the next chapter in
the U.S. response to global health crises," he said in a statement
released by One, the advocacy group he founded.

The White House released the numbers on Tuesday to provide a preview of
a more detailed budget proposal it plans to release on Thursday. Two
senior advisers to Mr. Obama - Gayle Smith, an expert on African affairs
and developing nations, and Dr. Ezekiel J. Emanuel, a health policy
expert - briefed advocacy groups on the plans on Tuesday, while Mr. Lew
made a surprise appearance at the regular White House briefing to talk
to reporters.

The plan appears to closely reflect the thinking of Dr. Emanuel, who is
the older brother of Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff. Last
year, Dr. Emanuel and Colleen C. Denny published a commentary in the
Journal of the American Medical Association in which they argued for a
broader global public health approach.

"By extending funds to simple but more deadly diseases, such as
respiratory illnesses and diarrheal illnesses, the U.S. government could
save more lives - especially young lives - at substantially lower cost,"
they wrote, adding that Pepfar "fails to address many of the developing
world's most serious health threats."

Guys, help the official Miss SIN NYC become a part of the show, "Rupaul's Drag Race" on the LOGO Network. OK, I just voted her in as the first official Miss SIN, but give me a little room as founder. :)

Seriously, Justin works his fake titties off each month to put on a fantastic show for the UB2 poz social nights at the famous Stonewall Bar in the Village. All of his/her work is to help guys laugh and break the ice so they can feel comfortable being HIV+ and meeting other guys just like them. That's just a part of what Justin does to help SIN NYC and would like to do for SIN and all poz social groups around the world by helping being a face and voice (and a sassy one at that) for guys just like you and me.

So please read his message to you and vote for her today! Ladies, start your engines, and may the best SINner win!

Bryan-
Greetings! I am hoping you can help me on a mission of mine. With the encouragement and support of SINNYC, I've decided to throw my name into the hat of RuPauls Drag Race-Season 2!

Over the past year I've had the pleasure of participating in SINNYC, as their resident Miss SINNYC (self proclaimed). What started out as a fun way to involve myself in the group has turned into opportunities far beyond what I could have ever imagined. Not only have they pushed, encouraged and been ever so supportive of my career as an entertainer, but the entire group has offered their help and assistance in the form of ideas, costumes, connections, make-up, hair, and everything else under the sun.

Thank to the encouragement of Chapter Manager, David Llewellyn, I was able to format my own monthly show that we provide to our members at our monthly UB2 party! What a blast that has been, with so many "high" moments, my letter will never be able to describe them all. Needless to say, I wouldn't be doing what I am now if it weren't for SIN.

With that being said, I want to take my dreams to a whole new level, and share the SIN in the process. I am asking for the help of all our SINNERS world wide, in hopes that I can be apart of RuPauls Drag Race-Season 2! How can they help you ask? It's very simple:

VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! Each person can vote once a day, and every vote counts. All they have to do is go to www.RuPaulcasting.com/people/AChilada and vote for me. They don't have to register, its free, and it only takes 3 seconds. The more votes, the better my chances. If they could go the extra mile and make sure to tell all their friends to do the same, and so forth and so forth...we could really make a difference!

Being on this show and having an opportunity such as this would really mean the world to me. In all of my short lived life, I can imagine no other career that would make me happier. My dream is to share my joy of life, happiness, old fashioned fun and human interest. Being a drag queen has more than provided these opportunities, but now its time to take it to the next level and my biggest dream: Television. I have never wanted to do something so much in all of my life, and with the help of SIN, I know we can make this happen.

I hope you can help, and let's get the word out! Remember, all you have to do it VOTE! EVERYDAY! Get your friends to join you in the cause.

Sincerely,
Justin Hall
aka Anne Chilada
Miss SINNYC (self proclaimed)

Hello

I thought you might be interested in the 2009 Fight HIV your way contest, presented by REYETAZ. You can submit an original photo and essay or video that expresses how you fight HIV every day for a chance to have your story shared with people around the country. Look for more information at http://www.hivphotovideocontest.com/. The contest closes on May 15th, 2009 so be sure to check it out soon!

For example this is my entry:
This rose represents the unconscious beauty that HIV has brought to my life. I fight HIV by stopping to smell the roses. It has awakened my purpose by helping me to accept the present moment in finding the perfection that is deeper than any form and untouched by time.

7 Important Facts about Strength In Numbers (SIN):

 • SIN represents a global association of poz gay men (there is no technical "membership")
Our belief is that any gay guy who has tested positive for HIV is a part of our movement. There's no membership fee as the price for entry has been costly enough already!

 • SIN respects your privacy and right to keep your HIV status confidential
If you join one of our chapters or email lists, it is never shared with anyone. And we never ask guys in SIN to give us their full name or photo. We believe that everyone living with HIV/AIDS has the right to determine for themselves whether they want to tell no one, someone or everyone about their HIV status.

 • SIN has an extremely diverse participation (all ages, races, incomes, length in time of infection)
The guys who participate in SIN groups or interact with other SIN chapters come from every walk of life. HIV is color-blind, infects at any age, doesn't disappear over decades, and never, to our knowledge, cared what "poz social group" someone claim allegiance. HIV causes AIDS if untreated, period. So we welcome everyone infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, but we also take care to stick to our mission of seeking to empower and improve the lives of poz gay men around the world.

 • SIN chapters are locally managed unless we're looking for a manager
We have no paid staff so each local representation of Strength In Numbers is manned by volunteers who donate their spare time to moderate our message boards and coordinate social events for the group. Some of our chapters may not have an active manager at times, and in those cases managers from other cities will temporarily guide that group until a local manager is found. There are no official boards or committees in the SIN model, as we hope to avoid the political infighting and power struggles that have hampered so many other AIDS related organizations.

 • SIN is currently working on becoming a 501c3 tax exemption & doesn't (and never will) accept federal/state funding
Too many times we've seen AIDS related groups turn into fundraising machines after they become an operating non-profit, quickly losing focus on their original mission. Once that happens, it seems they dictate to people living with HIV/AIDS rather than work hard to serve the best interests of their clients or ever try to involve their membership in their decision making process. When they take public funding, particularly from the federal government, usually they are saddled with a mass of complex and restrictive requirements including burdensome surveys to fill out at every event they administer. While we understand this sometimes is fundamentally necessary for AIDS service organizations (ASOs) offering expensive programs like housing or healthcare, SIN does not offer direct services and therefore we've sought to put off any need for 501c3 filing as long as possible. Currently we are funded entirely by our own contributions, with most costs for our main operations covered by myself as founder of SIN. We have been in the process of determining how best to approach a filing for 501c3 giving our unique mission and global outreach.

 • SIN seeks to collaborate and partner with other poz social groups
When I started SIN in Los Angeles, it was like pulling teeth to get any of the ASOs to partner with us or dare to even think of collaborating through us with other agencies. My vision for Strength In Numbers has been to break down the territorial barriers that keep so many ASOs from working with each other. Again, our view is that HIV doesn't care about labels and doesn't see any borders itself, so why shouldn't ASOs work together as much as possible for the greater good. SIN chapters and our international headquarters work with almost every AIDS-related program we encounter, unless we feel that the relationship is not mutually respectful.

 • SIN focuses on empowering poz guys to have fun, meet each other in a healthy environment & support each other
Despite some misconceptions over the years, we are not some covert HIV-prevention campaign run by the government or some ASO. Our belief is that by helping poz guys live better, happier lives they will take better care of themselves and thereby take better care of their sexual partners. SIN works to reduce the transmission and potential fatality of HIV infections by empowering HIV+ gay men to empower themselves. Our main mission though is to help poz guys meet each other, have fun and become as comfortable and happy as they possible can be.

Strength In Numbers (SIN) started as just a simple potluck party in the Hollywood Hills bringing together 50 or so single poz guys who were tired of rejection at bars or online. That was in September 2002, and now the SIN network reaches over 25,000 men. There are over 50 chapters of SIN social groups around the world (SIN NYC has 1500+ itself), some much more active than others, but we're all working on improving all of them. We also help local poz social groups that do not have the SIN name promote themselves and communicate with other groups like them. And this May we launch our 1st poz cruise retreat on the Carnival Splendor to Mexico (www.sincruise.com).

I plan to make this my last email blast regarding the Gay Men’s 2009 Poz Cruise Retreat.

Although the economy this year clearly sucks and will affect some of our regulars from attending we are doing quite well with easily over 100 men signed up.

The purpose of this email is to let you know that we approach a very important deadline as of May 8. This is a review date with Carnival and on this day they look at how many cabins I still have left unsold. At that time they will definitely be taking back many (possibly most) of our unsold cabins. Once I sell out my allotted cabins it is highly likely that rates will increase!!!

This is a very popular itinerary and date for Carnival as it is their only sailing date that goes to more unusual islands.

So I hope you can make it and join in on the fun October 10 – 18, 2009.

I ask if you haven't share some of your story with us.You can do this a few ways. Start a Blog , Introduce yourself in our Forums. I wanted to personally share my story with you. This is my story written by John a member of the POZ I AM community who works at an organization called
GET REAL PHILLY.

For me it’s about acceptance. I looked so hard for it for so long and it got me nowhere. Finally, being positive taught me to just let it all go and be who I really am. After that, it all happened naturally. I had to accept myself before anyone else would. Now I’m in a pretty good place.

I hope this will inspire you all to open up a bit more and share some of your journey with us..

Ryan White CARE Act: Implementation of the New Minority AIDS Initiative Provisions

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report entitled "Ryan White CARE Act: Implementation of the New Minority AIDS Initiative Provisions" that detailed how changes in the funding structure of the Ryan White CARE Act altered the programs and services delivered by grantees.

Early Treatment for HIV Act (ETHA) Reintroduced: House Legislation Would Extend Medicaid Coverage to Poor HIV Patients

The March 27th edition of Congressional Quarterly (CQ) Healthbeat reports, "Reps. Eliot L. Engel, D-N.Y., Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., have re-introduced the [Early Treatment for HIV Act (ETHA) which] would allow states to extend Medicaid coverage to low-income individuals with HIV." (Click here for more information.)

The bill would permit states to change their Medicaid eligibility policies to increase access to early and cost-effective HIV treatment before the virus progresses to AIDS, Engel said in a statement. According to Engel, this approach would be "more cost effective for the federal government since it's much more expensive to treat patients with AIDS than HIV."

Under current Social Security regulations, HIV-positive people must be disabled by the virus before they can receive Medicaid coverage, according to Engel's statement. The bill would allow participating states to receive higher federal rates for providing treatment to people living with HIV and is similar to other initiatives, such as the Children's Health Insurance Program and a program providing early Medicaid access to low-income women with cancer. "It makes no sense that a person must develop ... AIDS before Medicaid can treat them," Ros-Lehtinen said in the statement. She added, "This legislation would remedy this by giving states the option to extend Medicaid coverage to low-income persons so that they can confront their HIV before it becomes AIDS and thus help them from becoming terminally ill and a burden on their families and the public health system."

In a news release, Engel said the program would be "more cost effective for the federal government since it is much more expensive to treat patients with AIDS than HIV." The bill is modeled on legislation like SCHIP in that it allows "participating states to receive higher federal rates for treating patients with HIV." (Feldman, CQ HealthBeat, 3/26).

HIV/AIDS Organizations Nationwide Ask Obama to Lift Ban on Needle Exchange

NMAC, along with many partner organizations, recently sent a letter asking President Barack Obama to call on Congress to strike language banning federal funding for syringe exchange from the FY 2009 Appropriations Omnibus Bill. In addition, it asked that Congress to allow funding in the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill to be used for syringe exchange in the FY 2010 budget to Congress.

We believed that taking action now to remove the ban in the FY 2009 Omnibus is the most expeditious route to allow cities and states the needed flexibility to tailor existing federal funding streams to fight deadly infectious diseases based on the needs and conditions of local communities.

We're looking to find someone who can share an inside cabin on the SIN Cruise for poz gay men and their friends (May 3-9, 2009). The cost including tax is $712, which includes all meals on the ship. Airfare and any lodging in Long Beach, CA are not included. Our cruise is much less than any Atlantis cruise (as much as 50 to 70% less), so if you are booked on one of their cruises you might want to switch to ours. We'll make sure you get to know your cabin roommate well, and I already know he's great!

Our group is already getting to become friends and picking out some fun excursions. Because of the economy, we're also helping each other find ways to save money to get to Long Beach, staying there, and while on the cruise. We've also started to pick out some fun excursions during the cruise. This first ever all poz guy cruise trip will be on Carnival, the Fun Ships!

Last autumn I flew across country from San Francisco to Ft. Lauderdale and began one of the best journeys of my life, the annual Poz Cruise Retreat. It was also my very 1st time to Florida, and I was lucky to be able to stay at the host hotel for the cruise so that I got to meet other "cruisers" right away. The weather was a little stormy, but in a wonderfully unique tropical way. Rain in the Bay Area is almost never "warm"!

Paul, the travel agent who created this one of a kind experience, led the "Meet & Greet" party with the other social hosts for the cruise. There were over 140 other poz gay men, who would be traveling together with another contingent of 40 heterosexuals also living with HIV/AIDS. Guys mixed and mingled, and I had the fortune of meeting a very handsome young latin guy who was taking his 1st cruise as well. He was nervous and yet excited to be going on the trip and spending time with other poz guys since he rarely had even after testing positive. We bonded immediately, and I felt comforted that I could help deal with my own social anxieties (and yes, I can get pretty shy at times in new situations) by helping someone else face and conquer his own.

Then guys went in large groups of fast new friends to cab off to local gay restaurants and bars, and we danced our butts off before enjoying the hot men in the hot October evening at the Ramrod (a legendary Florida leather den of lust). Sunday morning we boarded a stunning Princess Cruise liner, and my stress level disappeared entirely for some reason. Probably because this was a floating resort where my room was just a quick elevator ride from several large swimming pools and a quick walk to luxurious dining rooms. I also love the sea (no jokes about sea men please) having grown up boating in Seattle, but here the air was balmy and comforting.

For the next week I was surrounded and empowered by other people also living with HIV/AIDS. It was a fantastic experience where I learned so much about these other amazing men and women, and even more importantly, I learned about myself. I also learned that I love to snorkel (which I hadn't done since being a kid on vacation in Hawaii). In St. Thomas, huge sea turtles glided below us during a relaxing sail over to an island reef. Even an unexpected tour to the far side of the main island turned into a group singing contest of theme songs to campy 70's TV shows (led by David and Greg from SIN NYC). Speaking of the boys of New York, they burned the dance floor every night and wowed us with spectacular Halloween costumes (Larry as "Batman Beyond" should have won a Tony).

Even outshining the stunning hillsides covered with palm trees and the sapphire blue seas, my favorite time on the cruise was stealing away to their on board spa and laying down on one of the heated tiled recliners. The gentle rocking of the ship only enhanced the effects of the warm stone, letting me fall into an extreme deep sleep. Fully relaxed, I would venture off to our nightly group dinners to enjoy full course meals, huge desserts, and best of all, hour after hour of conversation and laughs with other guys just like me.

We really bonded after that week, and I know that many of us will remain life-long friends. Times are not easy right now, I know in my own hardships and that of my family. The good thing about a cruise is that I found it to be the most affordable vacation I've ever taken. Almost all of my food during the trip was covered as part of my cruise price, and checking my daily on board spending total helped me keep my extra costs well under control. I'm writing this letter because I really think these HIV/poz cruise retreats are amazing experiences, as much for the soul as they are for the body & mind. I really want these retreats to continue to grow and prosper, fully understanding that right now some of us will not be able to afford this. But when we can, and I know our economy will bounce back, then this type of very special adventure we get to enjoy with others living with HIV/AIDS will be there bigger and better than ever before.

You can see photos of my cruise at:

Please email Paul directly about this cruise. Paul@...

The SIN Cruise to Mexico (from Long Beach) still has affordable spaces but they're going fast.

Please pass on to him that, at the very least, because the Sustiva component has a much longer half life that stopping the pill puts him at risk of developing resistance to the NNRTI class as he would be on monotherapy for two weeks until it leaves his system. So, he should also try to get some truvada, the other two components to take during those two weeks should the need arise to stop his meds for a short period.

URGENT: Member needs Atripla. I'm also copying other SIN chapters and poz groups (blind copy) just in case someone has some left over they can ship to him. Unfortunately as we all deal with our broken healthcare system and the added troubles caused by our economic recession, guys may be required to ask for help more often. If you find yourself in a bind as well, don't hesitate to contact me.

Can someone in Houston get Mann some information about any AIDS drug assistance programs in Houston (or Texas) as well as contacts at local AIDS service organizations? Thanks guys!

Hello group,

I've recently relocated from Dallas to to Houston and am in a bind. I'm hoping the SINHouston members can help me out. I am currently taking Atripla and have run out of meds. Does anyone have any Atripla they're not going to use/spare to get me through until my medical insurance kicks in? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to miss a dosage.

Thanks!
MANN
