DISTRIBUTE WIDELY

Guys, the landmark AIDS service organization, STOP AIDS Project here in San Francisco is looking for a Program Manager to oversee their social and assistance department that is devoted entirely to HIV+ gay men in the Bay Area.  It's a demanding but potentially rewarding position, and best of all, you get to live here in this remarkable city with a wealth of HIV services and an active poz community.  I'm very very very sure that moving costs are not covered, but I will personally buy you dinner at Boulevard Restaurant, which looks directly at the legendary Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, if you get the job!

NOTE:  Please contact STOP AIDS directly, do not email me.  I will only delete your application.  If you are not savvy enough to not follow my instruction, I wouldn't want you to be working for this important program anyway.  Seriously, in all things that are Rachel Maddow serious, if you can't follow this simple instruction, you are not capable enough to handle this job and I personally would not want you work there.  Positive Force has been a very important addition to the lives of HIV+ gay men in this city that I love.  Here's hoping they find someone fabulous and fierce!  :)

We're looking to find someone who can share an inside cabin on the SIN Cruise for poz gay men and their friends (May 3-9, 2009).  The cost including tax is $712, which includes all meals on the ship.  Airfare and any lodging in Long Beach, CA are not included.  Our cruise is much less than any Atlantis cruise (as much as 50 to 70% less), so if you are booked on one of their cruises you might want to switch to ours.  We'll make sure you get to know your cabin roommate well, and I already know he's great!

Our group is already getting to become friends and picking out some fun excursions.  Because of the economy, we're also helping each other find ways to save money to get to Long Beach, staying there, and while on the cruise.  We've also started to pick out some fun excursions during the cruise.  This first ever all poz guy cruise trip will be on Carnival, the Fun Ships!

For details go to:  www.sincruise. com

Last autumn I flew across country from San Francisco to Ft. Lauderdale and began one of the best journeys of my life, the annual Poz Cruise Retreat.  It was also my very 1st time to Florida, and I was lucky to be able to stay at the host hotel for the cruise so that I got to meet other "cruisers" right away.  The weather was a little stormy, but in a wonderfully unique tropical way.  Rain in the Bay Area is almost never "warm"!

Paul, the travel agent who created this one of a kind experience, led the "Meet & Greet" party with the other social hosts for the cruise.  There were over 140 other poz gay men, who would be traveling together with another contingent of 40 heterosexuals also living with HIV/AIDS.  Guys mixed and mingled, and I had the fortune of meeting a very handsome young latin guy who was taking his 1st cruise as well.  He was nervous and yet excited to be going on the trip and spending time with other poz guys since he rarely had even after testing positive.  We bonded immediately, and I felt comforted that I could help deal with my own social anxieties (and yes, I can get pretty shy at times in new situations) by helping someone else face and conquer his own.

Then guys went in large groups of fast new friends to cab off to local gay restaurants and bars, and we danced our butts off before enjoying the hot men in the hot October evening at the Ramrod (a legendary Florida leather den of lust).  Sunday morning we boarded a stunning Princess Cruise liner, and my stress level disappeared entirely for some reason.  Probably because this was a floating resort where my room was just a quick elevator ride from several large swimming pools and a quick walk to luxurious dining rooms.  I also love the sea (no jokes about sea men please) having grown up boating in Seattle, but here the air was balmy and comforting.

For the next week I was surrounded and empowered by other people also living with HIV/AIDS.  It was a fantastic experience where I learned so much about these other amazing men and women, and even more importantly, I learned about myself.  I also learned that I love to snorkel (which I hadn't done since being a kid on vacation in Hawaii).  In St. Thomas, huge sea turtles glided below us during a relaxing sail over to an island reef.  Even an unexpected tour to the far side of the main island turned into a group singing contest of theme songs to campy 70's TV shows (led by David and Greg from SIN NYC).  Speaking of the boys of New York, they burned the dance floor every night and wowed us with spectacular Halloween costumes (Larry as "Batman Beyond" should have won a Tony).

Even outshining the stunning hillsides covered with palm trees and the sapphire blue seas, my favorite time on the cruise was stealing away to their on board spa and laying down on one of the heated tiled recliners.  The gentle rocking of the ship only enhanced the effects of the warm stone, letting me fall into an extreme deep sleep.  Fully relaxed, I would venture off to our nightly group dinners to enjoy full course meals, huge desserts, and best of all, hour after hour of conversation and laughs with other guys just like me.

We really bonded after that week, and I know that many of us will remain life-long friends.  Times are not easy right now, I know in my own hardships and that of my family.  The good thing about a cruise is that I found it to be the most affordable vacation I've ever taken.  Almost all of my food during the trip was covered as part of my cruise price, and checking my daily on board spending total helped me keep my extra costs well under control.  I'm writing this letter because I really think these HIV/poz cruise retreats are amazing experiences, as much for the soul as they are for the body & mind.  I really want these retreats to continue to grow and prosper, fully understanding that right now some of us will not be able to afford this.  But when we can, and I know our economy will bounce back, then this type of very special adventure we get to enjoy with others living with HIV/AIDS will be there bigger and better than ever before.

You can see photos of my cruise at:

Please email Paul directly about this cruise.  Paul@...

The SIN Cruise to Mexico (from Long Beach) still has affordable spaces but they're going fast.

Bon voyage,

Please pass on to him that, at the very least, because the Sustiva component has a much longer half life that stopping the pill puts him at risk of developing resistance to the NNRTI class as he would be on monotherapy for two weeks until it leaves his system. So, he should also try to get some truvada, the other two components to take during those two weeks should the need arise to stop his meds for a short period.

URGENT: Member needs Atripla.  I'm also copying other SIN chapters and poz groups (blind copy) just in case someone has some left over they can ship to him.  Unfortunately as we all deal with our broken healthcare system and the added troubles caused by our economic recession, guys may be required to ask for help more often.  If you find yourself in a bind as well, don't hesitate to contact me.

Can someone in Houston get Mann some information about any AIDS drug assistance programs in Houston (or Texas) as well as contacts at local AIDS service organizations?  Thanks guys!

Hello group,

I've recently relocated from Dallas to to Houston and am in a bind. I'm hoping the SINHouston members can help me out. I am currently taking Atripla and have run out of meds. Does anyone have any Atripla they're not going to use/spare to get me through until my medical insurance kicks in? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to miss a dosage.

Thanks!

Tango, dulce de leche, Casa Rosada, and now SIN, how could you not love Argentina?  Oh, I forgot to mention the amazing men there.  Thanks to a muy guapo stud named Norby, Latin America has another poz social group.  HIV is as much an issue for gay men in that continent as it is in Europe, the US, or anywhere else.  And there are few, if no, social support programs or outlets for HIV+ gay men.  Hopefully, we can help change that.

If you have poz friends who live or work in Argentina, please let them know about SIN Buenos Aires.  And yes, we're well aware that "SIN" in Spanish (Espanol) means "without", but we decide to stick with the standard English acronym as that is our hallmark.  And honestly, "without" Buenos Aires, the world would be a much less beautiful place.  And "without" each other, we couldn't find Strength In Numbers.

NOTE:  This message group is open only for poz guys who are actual citizens of Argentina, work in or visit the country (primarily Buenos Aires) on a regular basis, or live in surrouding nations (such as Chile, Uruguay or Brazil).  If guys want to join, they will asked to verify this on good faith.  Merely wanting to meet guys there as pen pals will not be sufficient reason to join.  Our goal is to make SIN Buenos Aires an active local social group that will help poz guys there build physical social support with other guys who live near them.  Thanks for your understanding.

Tenga un buen fin de semana!

(PS: If my Spanish is ever lacking, have patience with me as I'm increasing my language skill practice so that I'll hopefully be fluent sooner rather than later.  I'm also brushing up on my French and Portuguese.)

Hello,

My name is Lee.  My friend David was unable to book the Cruise with me.  This is my 1st Cruise and I'm feeling reluctant to be "assigned" a roommate whom I do not know.  I'm searching to meet someone who is compatible, non-smoker, and quiet (i.e. does not snore.)

I am not booked yet for the Cruise.  If you are interested, please Reply back to Bryan (who will then forward your email to me).

I'm excited about this cruise and I'm hoping to make a new friend in the process.

A little about me:  48, love to travel and explore.

Serious inquiries only, please.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Lee (SF)

It's a match made in cyber-heaven.  If you are as much a Facebook addict as I am, please look up the Fan page for Strength In Numbers (search "Strength In Numbers" and then click on Pages).  Become a Fan of SIN today and help spread the word about SIN.  I've put a specific disclaimer on the Fan page that anyone who does become a fan of the SIN page does not have to be HIV+ nor should anyone assume that any of the fans are HIV+ or have AIDS.  We have fans of all types and kinds, and we also totally understand if guys still want to protect their privacy and not become a "Fan".  When you become a Fan, your Facebook profile and photo will be listed on the Page.

There is also a "secret" Group for SIN, that is only available by invite.  By keeping it "secret", we've made the group invisible to the general Facebook population, which means you can join the SIN Group and no one but other members of the group could see that you belong to it.  To become a member of the SIN Group, first add me as a Friend and then I'll invite you.  It's a nice way to get to know other guys who are part of SIN, belong to other poz social groups or networks, or are HIV+ and are on Facebook.

You can find me by searching "Bryan Levinson".  My network is "San Francisco".  We're still working on a creating a unique social networking site soley for SIN members or other poz social groups where members could have fully function profiles with photos and videos.  (And no, you can't upload naughty photos, but you can upload that video of the dog sleep running.  I love that video!)

Thanks to all the guys who corrected me.  You "spring" forward 1 hour this Saturday night (actually it happens at 2 AM on Sunday morning), and you "fall" back on November 1st (2 AM).  I apologize for the mix up, I was tired and hungry when I sent this out.

Also, I wanted to clarify that I always like to focus more on Strength In Numbers as an organization made up of incredibly compassionate me and all the great work that other poz social groups are doing, not have it be about myself.  If I gave that impression, again, I apologize.  So to those groups that inspired me like San Diego Pozabilities, Palm Springs Pozabilities, DC Young Poz Socials, and the HIVe from NYC, here's an early shout-out!

And to the guys who live in the Northeast, keep warm and tomorrow dig!

"Join us for Positive Being's annual "Exploring the Body Positive" weekend workshop at Wildwood, a beautiful mountaintop retreat near the Russian River.  The workshop begins at 6 pm Friday and runs through 3 pm Sunday, April 10-12, 2009.  The cost is $295 and includes room and board as well as the workshop.  Ask about our scholarship program for the financially challenged.

Positive Being (www.positivebeing.org) is an ASO dedicated to improving the quality of life for those with HIV/AIDS through healing touch.  This workshop will bring men with HIV together in community to reclaim our bodies as a site of pleasure and a source of healing strength.  Together we will work to improve body our body image by sharing and moving beyond the losses due to HIV.  To ground us and keep us in our bodies, each day we will also share touch, so that we may discover how opening our hearts and bodies to each other can create a sense of well-being and delight.

Wildwood, long a healing place for men with HIV, sits atop a mountain studded with redwoods.  There are breathtaking views and trails.  There's also a pool and a large hot tub.  Each room (double occupancy) has a private bath.  Transportation can be arranged if needed.   Please consider joining us and tell your friends!

IMPORTANT: If you are outside the Bay Area, there are lots of great airfare deals on Virgin Atlantic or JetBlue to San Francisco/Oakland.  And Bill told me that they usually organize carpooling up to the retreat north of San Francisco.  It's a fantastic way to celebrate Easter weekend!  The flyer for this event is embedded below in this email but may not appear in all email or Internet browsers.

The creator of the legendary HIV cruises (Paul Stalbaum) has helped me start the very first cruise retreat just for HIV+ gay men.  We'll be setting sail from Long Beach, California on Sunday, May 3rd (returning Saturday, May 9th), visiting Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas for day-only stops.  Private excursions for our group could include snorkeling off the Baja cape or zip lining through the jungle tree top canopy in the jungles outside of Puerta Vallarta.

Prices per person range from $750 (single cabin) to $1212 (private balcony), with all costs subject to change, port/fuel fees, and based on double occupancy in each cabin.  Our total group could be around 50 guys or more, and we will be on a regular sailing (not all gay).  We will have some private bar parties and lots of activities together on the ship as a group, including reserved group dining each night.

In light of the economy, I'm working extra hard to help guys figure out lower cost flight/travel options to Long Beach, and more affordable lodging once they arrive for that weekend before the Cruise.  Additionally, we'll be helping each other monitor our spending while on the ship so no one has sticker shock when they get their final cruise bill.  Also we'll be assisting guys find a fun roommate as best as possible and connecting guys prior to the Cruise so they know more of the guys going.  You will not feel lonely on this cruise with our group, but YOU WILL HAVE THE VACATION OF A LIFETIME!  Take a chance, you may make lifelong poz friends or meet that special poz husband, and we'll have a very special bond as HIV+ gay men.

ND nurse to oversee Ryan White HIV/AIDS program

(Washington) President Barack Obama has named a North Dakota nurse and expert on rural health to run the government’s community clinics program..

Mary Wakefield, who started out as a nurse and became a health policy expert, now directs the Center for Rural Health at the University of North Dakota. She will lead the Health Resources and Services Administration, a small agency with an important public health mission.

Known as HRSA, the agency oversees some 7,000 community clinics that serve low-income and uninsured people. It also runs the government’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS program, providing medical care and medications for 530,000 low-income patients. The recently passed economic stimulus bill gives HRSA $2.5 billion to spend for improvements to health care facilities and training medical professionals.

“Under her leadership we will be able to expand and improve the care provided at the community health centers, which serve millions of uninsured Americans, and address severe provider shortages across the country,” Obama said in a statement.
Community health centers are sometimes the only doctors’ offices in depressed inner city neighborhoods and rural communities. Their patients are usually low-income people, often uninsured. The centers provide basic medical care, keeping children with colds from ending up in the emergency room, and helping patients with chronic conditions to stay healthy.
Wakefield, 54, said in an interview her first priority will be to allocate the economic recovery funds provided to the agency. The money will be used to refurbish health centers and hire doctors and nurses.

“Right now, in these times of economic downturn, these programs are pivotal,” she said. “They reach communities across the country and touch lives in ways that can make a huge difference.”

Wakefield is familiar with Washington, having served as a top staff aide for two North Dakota senators, including Democrat Kent Conrad, the budget committee chairman.
Conrad said she has “the background and expertise to make a real difference in our nation’s health care policy.”

Wakefield’s life has been touched by family tragedy. In 2005, a brother and two of his young children were killed in a car wreck. Her sister-in-law was severely injured in the crash, and a surviving nephew had to have his right arm amputated.

“Colors that painted my world drained away,” Wakefield wrote at the time. “My enthusiasm for health policy, the focus of most of my work, was completely gone.”
In response to the loss, six U.S. senators - four Democrats and two Republicans - introduced legislation to improve emergency medical care for children and named it ‘The Wakefield Act.’ The bill did not pass, but Wakefield said it helped call attention to the needs of children.

HRSA is part of the Health and Human Services Department, which has been leaderless since Tom Daschle, Obama’s first choice for secretary, was forced to withdraw his nomination because of tax problems. Other major posts in the department, including the heads of Medicare and the Food and Drug Administration, remain unfilled.
Obama is expected to move quickly to nominate an HHS secretary. A senior administration official has told The Associated Press that Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is near the top of the list of candidates.

You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.

On a lighter note, I made it on a fashion blog here in San Francisco.  Funny thing was that I didn't feel all that fabulous that day either when this fashion writer stopped to take my photo.  Mainly he loved my green distressed Diesel hat, that I bought at a used clothing store near the Castro.  Don't ever pay full price for anything!

I think it was more my attitude, probably influenced by the hot Simply Red remix I had downloaded that morning and was jamming to on my iPhone.  The classic San Francisco red/blue call box next to me is my favorite part.  OK, my crotch looks terrible though...but the shoes were at least a good choice that day.

Hey guys, check out this stop smoking program from UCSF.  OK, I've smoked 1 or 2 cigarettes in my lifetime (and other stuff too, aka Michael Phelps).  But I also know that regular cigarette smoking can definitely impact a person living with HIV much more than someone who is not.  If you have HIV and are a smoker, this might be a very good idea for you to check out.  Thanks!

Dear Mr. Bryan Levinson,

As you may be aware, cigarette smoking rates among LGBTs are significantly higher than the general population.  Many LGBT smokers are interested in quitting but may not have access to cessation programs, particularly programs that are sensitive to specific LGBT issues.  Our research group at the University of California San Francisco has been working to develop and evaluate smoking cessation treatment specifically designed for LGBT smokers.  We have recently completed evaluation of an Internet-based smoking cessation program.  793 LGBT smokers from across the country participated.  Overall, we found that a little over 20% of the participants were quit one year after enrollment in the program.  This was very exciting for us because most self-help programs have much lower quit rates.

As a follow-up to this work, we have recently started recruitment for a project comparing the Internet-based smoking cessation program to telephone counseling for LGBT cigarette smokers.  The program is free.  Smokers can find out information about the program by going to our website – http://www.iquit.medschool.ucsf.edu/. I have also attached a flyer providing contact information for the study.

We are hoping to get information about this study out to as many LGBT smokers as possible.  Our goal is to enroll LGBT folk from around the country.  We hope you are willing to share this information with your group members.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.    We appreciate any assistance in addressing this health problem within our community.

Many thanks,

Vivian

Friends-

Poz magazine and AIDSmeds.com are asking poz folks to add their information about mental health and substance abuse for PLWH. They would like to have data to provide for the lawmakers with connection to the expected new legislation efforts for Ryan White. If you could take the 4 or 5 minutes to fill this out and also share it with your poz friends that would be helpful..

The guys from SIN Philly and NYC are organizing poz guys for Gay Disney 2009 in Orlando.  I have heard that prices and flights have been reduced because of the economy.

Also, please know that the vast majority of events organized by guys on SIN are low cost or free local events.  And if you haven't seen any of those types of events organized in your area (such as potlucks, movie nights, picnics where it isn't freezing, etc), then plan one and post it to your SIN group.  SIN is a totally volunteer, member-driven group so events don't happen unless guys take charge and organize them.

Hello Guys,

I know it is only January but now is the
best time to start planning for another
wonderful Gay Disney Trip. This year Greg
one of the Philly SIN moderators and I
have reserved several villa's at Marriott's
Sable Palms and Marriott's Grande Vista
as well as studios at the Lake Buena Vista
Springhill Suites. Below are the rates and
hotel links...

For those of you that joined us last year
you know these villas are incredible and
fully loaded, including hot tubs, BBQ grills,
washer & dryer and all the amenities.
For those of you that have not, check out
their web-sites and our photos from last
years trip...

Photos from Gay Disney 2008:

These rates are the total cost. NOT the per room
or per person cost. This is the total cost for the
entire villa or studio, including tax. The actual
cost will depend on how many share the space.

Sable Palm Villa's (3 villa's available)
(10 minutes from Disney) 2 bedroom $96. per night
(NOT per person or per room, tax included)
If two people share each bedroom the total
cost per person, tax will come to $24.00
per night for deluxe accommodations.
Grande Vista (3 bedroom villas available)
(10 minutes from Disney) 3 bedroom $162. per night
(NOT per person or per room, tax included)
If two people share each bedroom the total

(5 minutes from Disney) $90. per night
(NOT per person or per room, tax included)
If two people share the total cost per
person with tax will come to $45.00
per night for deluxe studio accommodations.

Again I know this is early but now is the
best time to get cheap airfares, plan to
take time off of work and book the best villas.
If you have any questions call or write me.

Ciao,

This is for the October Poz Cruise.  Just in advance, I know that many guys are going through very tough economic times and some have complained about seeing emails about vacations at this time.  Fortunately, not everyone has been laid off and for those who still have their jobs, it's still quite important that they spend their money.  There are plenty of gay people in South Florida who make their livings off cruises and they are hurting immensely right now.  And quite a number of these guys are HIV+ themselves.

So please understand these announcements are not to insult those who can't afford these trips right now, in any way.  But if we don't keep these types of trips going, then we'll have a very hard time getting them going again once the economy comes back, and here's hope that after tomorrow it will only get better!

Thanks for living in hope like me guys.

Hello To All,

I am happy to mention that I have been able to arrange with Carnival Cruises a reduced deposit for this year’s annual Poz Cruise Retreat.

The normal deposit for a cruise of eight nights is $300.00 to secure a place. But due to the economic situation you are now able to make a reservation with a deposit of only $150.00 per person! The balance of the deposit does not have to be paid until mid-May.

This year we will be sailing on the new Carnival Freedom from Ft Lauderdale on October 10 – 18, 2009. Our stops include Spanish Colonial San Juan, shopping Mecca of St Thomas, charming Antigua with 365 beaches, Tortola known for spectacular snorkel and diving, and British Colonial Nassau. Rates begin at only $535.00 plus taxes and includes all meals.

Please feel free to contact me for reservations and questions. I hope to see you on board!!

Sincerely,
