Congrats to SIN New York City for being named one of the top Health and Wellness sites by Yahoo Groups! Many of the staff of Yahoo Groups see SIN NYC and the rest of the SIN chapters (and other poz social groups that connect via Yahoo) as some of the most meaningful successes stories of their company's efforts. SIN NYC for certain has become one of the most vibrant social groups of its kind in the entire world, bringing together over 1100 HIV+ gay men from around the Tri-State area, and joining quite a bit with SIN Philly and DC Young Poz Socials for combined strength. Much of the success of SIN NYC is based on the hard and passionate work by David Llewlyn, its general manager and resident hottie event planner extradonaire.
I was recently asked to join the advisory board for Yahoo Groups and just visited their Sunnyvale corporate headquarter campus for a two day Roundtable discussion with Yahoo developers and marketing folks. It was exciting to see what they are working on for new developments for the division, one of the fasting growing ones of all of Yahoo. Although there is much press about pressure from Microsoft, recent news including increased profits by Yahoo and search partnership with Google have made it much less clear what will happen. No matter what, it's clear that Yahoo Groups, reaching over 100 million individual users around the world, will certainly not be changed dramatically no matter what kind of possible merger may happen.
So as Yahoo and many other social networking/Web companies change with the times, groups like SIN NYC that has created such a strong and tight-knit community from online to offline live events around Manhattan and beyond, will keep going strong. Little did we know that when we started SIN back in Los Angeles over 5 years ago that we find ourselves rated so highly by one of the world's greatest companies. Thanks to David and his crew for putting us on their map, literally, and to all of the moderators/managers of the over 40 SIN chapters around the world.
Here's to a great rest of 2008!
SIN-cerely,
Bryan Levinson
