black on the silver should come off with a paper towel while it's still wet,
leaving it kinda grey. if it doesn't come off easily that way, maybe
something other than the usual silver oxide on there due to contaminants in
the water.
peroxide will clean silver plate-out from the silver and glass pretty
easily. rinse thoroughly afterwards. let it soak. i use a number of liter
bottles and make gallon batches. i always have a few bottles full of
peroxide that've been full for quite awhile and when others get brown with
dark rings on the bottom i swap for a clean one and re-use the peroxide in
the brown one. no scrubbing needed, just some shaking... but be careful as
peroxide can cause pressure buildup and bottles can break.
my brew jar is large enough to get my arm in, and i rinse immediately after
making a batch of CS, and dry with a paper towel. if i don't make it overly
strong this is sufficient to keep it clean for a long time without having to
use peroxide.
you might be brewing it too strong... or at least stronger than really
needed. got a meter? a good one like the Hanna PWT or HM com-100? the
simple battery generator designs can be ok if there's some kind of current
limiting. a generator with auto-shutoff is better, as it doesn't over-brew
and doesn't need babysitting.
a good meter is useful to tell when the CS is strong enough while still
nicely clear, and is good to test the water.
if you still have the brown/grey batch, set it aside and try again. someday
the old batch should mostly clear up and have a layer of silver fallout that
you can filter out... takes months tho. if it doesn't clear up there's
probably misc compounds in it from not-pure water.
i do use RO, but after optimizing my system with very carefully selected
cartridges and adding a de-ionizer stage. my RO water reads much lower ppm
than store bought distilled on my meter, so i call it good enough. i had to
somehow overcome the problem of not remembering to buy DW while at the
market so i didn't have to make special trips. i go through at least 6
liters/month.
DW quality varies by locality and brand, and then still isn't consistent.
the most consistent good DW in my area comes from whole foods mkt, which
strangely is also the cheapest.

Subject: [ silvermedicine.org ] Black gook on my CS.
Just built a CS Generator. Using two bars of silver bought from a
local
jeweler. Using nine volt batteries as per a plan I found on the net.
Ran
it about 2.5 hours as per the plans. Came up with a black gook in
the
water. Filtered it through a couple of coffee filters an came out
with
just a tinge of brown/gray but finding hard to remove the black gook
either from the glass or the silver bars. My water is not distilled
but
run through a reverse osmosis filter.
