I am thrilled to find this forum!! Can someone tell me how to go
about getting my son 'officially' diagnosed as a Selective Mute? I
live 2 hours east of Toronto, Canada. My son barely participated
during JK and never spoke to another child the entire year. He is now
in SK and will sometimes whisper to his teacher. Again, he is not
talking to the other kids in his class. And yes, he is perfectly
normal at home with his brothers. He is also very anxious at large
family dinners/functions and is known for 'shutting down' at them.
The school is likely going to want an official diagnoses at some
point. The pediatrician that our family doctor sent us to told us to
go home..."he will grow out of it". Is Kinark Child and Family
Services my best option? How do I get someone to come and evaluate
him at school? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank
you.
