Hi, I am the mother of a six year old SM child.
She has been in the school system for almost four
years now. Just about one year ago, I discovered the
selective mutism web site and discovered there was actually
a name for her condition. We have been trying to
get help ever since, but as you say very little is
known about this condition where we live. Her doctor
said she was just very shy and would grow out of it.
She has been seen by a psychiatrist and diagnosed
with SM, and we have been working with her school and
teachers, and she is making progress very slowly. While she
will not speak in class or to the teacher, she will
speak to one classmate in our home, and she will speak
to me (Mom) in the school, if no one else is
around.

We are looking for strategies to use at school to
help her along. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
