It's good to know that SM is starting to appear in the media;I find
people so ignorant,narrow-minded and unwilling to accept it as
anything but stubborness.Family members have cut off relations with us
because my son doesnot speak to their four year-old,who
is "traumatised" by this! They do not accept that he has SM,even though
he has been diagnosed by a psychologist AND psychiatrist,is identified
by the school and is having in-home help from a children's mental
health org.I could tear my hair out!
Fortunately,his teacher(Grade 1)is phenomenal,and he started to
whisper to her on Valentine's Day.He's also making some progress
outside school, but we know it will be a slow process. As far as I am
concerned, the more positive media coverage for SM,the better. These
kids need as much support and understanding as possible to help them
through everyday situations that the rest of us take for granted.
