Hi,
My son is now 12 and in the 7th grade. We have tried many different ways
to have him communicate with his teacher.
He will speak to a few friends but not anyone older than him. He can
whisper in his friends ear and the friend can relay the information.
He writes answers to questions on the blackboard especially for math.
He uses walkie talkies to give reports. He started out in the hall with
the kids and teacher in the class room. He could give his report and then the
teacher could ask questions. He will talk in front of the class if the teacher
isn't in the room. Sometimes the teacher will take the walkie talkie in the hall
and he will give his report in front of the class. We are working on having the
teacher stand near the open door so he can hear and then in the door way and
then in the class.
We also use video taping. We will tape Jed giving a report at home and
send it with him to school. This worked really well for a science fair. He could
have the TV/VCR behind him, with him explaining the project, while he
demonstrated the expirement.
We try to make him as comfortable as possible and ask him how he would
like to handle the giving the report.
I hope these suggestions help.

Hello Everyone,
I am having a meeting with the teacher to talk about some next steps
for my daughter. I am wondering if anyone has any advice on some new
things that we could be trying. Our main goals are to have Taylor talk
to the teacher in a private situation and or have Taylor start to talk
with some of her friends on the school property. Should we try
incentives or just try to get her to do it. I do not want to push her,
but I do not want to jsut leave it alone either she is going into grade
5 next year and that means more speeches and oral communication. I
would appreciate any advice from anyone
Thank you
Kristy
