Hi Amanda. Here are some things you as a parent can do to help your
child.
Take an active role in helping your child with intervention and
socialization ( Be a model)
EARLY Psychologist diagnosis-Find right services and provider
Write a letter to the principal and Special Services requesting
services
Meet with Special Services and principal to determine 504 or OHI
Educate them
Testing may follow - NONVERBAL
Choose teacher – soft spoken, patient and willing to learn about SM
Meet with teacher and principal
Give handouts and information
Key worker??? SLP? Parent?
Take your child to school during the summer to get used to the
building
Child meets teacher and spends time on the playground and in the
classroom
Arrange play dates on the playground and at home with children who
will be in the class (short period with support)
Invite the teacher to visit parents' home
Praise child at home (star chart) for behavioral accomplishments and
successes with independence
No pressure for "speech" at home. Just focus on lowering anxiety
levels.
Hope this helps.
