Re: help for teacher/parent of 14-year-oldwith selective mutism

I didn't mean to sound like he has had no intervention, but the
middle school he went to was a much smaller, community-oriented
school where we, as teachers, could really look out for our students.
I am just concerned because of the unfamiliarity of what he's about
to face as far as more students, new teachers, and even a new
paraprofessional to assist him in classes. He really made a great
deal of progress in middle school with the help of his classmates who
were familiar with him, his teachers, and paraprofessionals as well
as he had gotten past the stage of using a lot of non-verbal skills
to communicate. I am teaching him this summer for five weeks, and he
is aware and willing to work on the possibility that he will one day
talk in the school setting. He's come really close a couple of times.
I will definitely show his mother this website so that she can
communicate with other parents who have already been dealing with the
active therapy involved in helping the selective mutism.

He will need a good child psychologist who knows how to deal with
SM. Wow, 14 is a long time to go without intervention for SM. The
non-talking behavior must be very engrained by now, making it tougher
to overcome. I do know from experience with my own daughter that
therapy and meds have changed her life for the better. He will need
a good transition plan from the school district. Maybe they can
place him in classes where he knows some of the kids from Middle
School.

This way she can get involved and correspond with other parents in
her similar situations.

They have a treatment protocol on their site.
