Re: [Selective Mutism Support Group] hello everyone

Dear Beck,
I am glad you found out about SM. It is a very crippling anxiety disorder.
Please find a competent child psychologist in your area who knows about SM.
Also consider putting him on meds (prozac) to lower his anxiety. My daughter is
making a full recovery from SM thanks to her doctor and meds. Check out the
website called About Our Kids. It has a treatment protocol for SM by New York
University.
Dont let your son continue to be mute for too long, or the mute behavior will be
too entrenched.
SM is curable but it does not go away on its own. Find him help. Good luck
Victoria

Hi there,

I am a new member of this group and thought I'd take a minute to
introduce myself. I live in Portland Australia with my husband Mark
and our two children, Isaac who is 3 and a half and Charli who is 15
months. Isaac has recently been informally diagnosed as having SM.
He has been attending speech therapy and early intervention
playgroup for about a year now. The playgroup teacher read about SM
over the holiday break and was very excited to show me the
information. She thought it sounded exactly like Isaac. I have to
say that when I read it and showed it to my husband we were both
flawed, it could have been written about our son. He has started
Kindergarten this year and has struggled. The kinder teacher asked
us if he was actually mute as she said "he never speaks." So i'm
looking forward to showing her the info on SM and seeing what she
thinks.

Sorry this is such a ramble I am just so glad to know that my son is
not alone.
Beck
