Hi Victoria,
Thank ou for this info. I am very nervous about putting her on medication like
prozac, I always thought it to be some kind of heavy duty drug, but I am willing
to give it a try. She has an appointment set up with one of the psychologists
at Kinark. I'm in Oshawa also.

Hi Lisa,
It is wonderful to start her as young as possible with prozac and behavior
therapy. At first, I tried the behavior therapy without the prozac because I
was nervous about medicating her. The therapy went very slow and I was getting
frustrated. I finally agreed to meds and her whole world turned around. THe
prozac helped her respond to the therapy and the two together made a huge
difference. She is now talking to kids, teachers, neighbors, store clerks, etc.
SHe is playing and participating in school. Before intervention, she sat by
herself, never spoke, never participated in anything.
The therapy helps to desensitize her to fearful situations, usually speaking in
front of others. Gradually, the therapist brings"brave talking" goals to a
higher level. There is a wonderful treatment protocol on SM on the NYU Child
Study Center website called About Our Kids. Here is where I found her
psychologist.
The only side affect I notice from prozac is that it makes her more active and
talkative, especially at home. I was told there are no long term side affects
and it is not addictive. When she first started, she slept and ate less, but
this went away. I really cant recommend it enough, since we are seeing
wonderful results. I too was scared to medicate her at first. Now I would tell
any parent not to hesitate.
The toughest part is finding a good therapist with experience in SM. Where do
you live?
Good luck,
Victoria

Hi Victoria,
Thank you for your advise. I am in the process of getting a psychologist
right now, and I will definitly make sure they are experienced with SM. I would
like to ask you, what exactly is behavior therapy and does your daughter have
any negative side effects to the prozac?

Dear Lisa,
My daughter was diagnosed at 4 with SM. She was put on prozac and behavior
therapy. A good, competent psychologist really helped her. Please find someone
who has experience with SM
