Re: [Selective Mutism Support Group] School meeting for my daughter

I am not finding any local therapists that knwo about SM either. As
suggested earlier to me there are some doctors at many major
universities. I am contacting Dr. Shipon-Blum at PCOM in
Philadelphia. That may be worth the trip for you from Conn. I will
let you know how that goes. Also, one thing I am doing is tracking
very carefully every phone call, email and information that happens
between us and the school/teacher. I am also starting to journal my
daughters daily behavior. I want to keep track of how she behaves
in different settings more specifically. As I mentioned earlier the
school doc wanted to categorized her as ODD. My husband said he was
just being careful and doing his job to go over everything
thoroughly. If he was doing his job and was interested in really
helping he would have asked to actually meet my daughter. Also,
when I showed her preschool picture to the group where Amanda is in
a classic SM position (head down and tilted) they all did not go
for that and the teacher claimed that Amanda was making progress and
giving her eye contact. At first I was excited but today after I
have had time to think my intuition says that they may be
exagerating the progress. How do you really know how your child is
boing treated in the classroom? At our school we don't even get
inside the door, they get dropped off at the gate. My friend is
going to volunteer in Amanda's class to observe what really
happens. If I don't get positive feedback I will pursue the
homeschooling until I find the right school. I have already started
researching the system in delaware. I never want to knowingly put
Amanda in a situation where she is being treated in a way that will
set her back further. I will end with a question - Do most of your
kids talk about school at home and indicate that they wish they were
talking and involved or is it a normal charectaristic for them to
avoid even any discussion about the topic? Sorry my notes are the
longest, they will shorten as I get all my venting caught up!

would be greatly appreciated.
