You can get Isopure Pure Protein at Vitamin shoppe. It has no taste, no fat, no
carbs. You can add it to whatever you want. Soups, drinks, etc. I put it in
tomato soups and some other soups. You can also add it to milk and ice and
flavor the drink with something with more of a mild taste. If you get the
Nestle creamers for coffee, you can put a little of that in the shake. 1
tablespoon has 5 carbs. I love the new Egg Nog flavor.

Also instead of using regular milk, you might try soy milk OR the almond milk -
the unsweetened only have 40 calories, lots of protein and less carbs than
regular milk.

If you want to try other flavors, flavor it with a portion of a crystal light
packet (not a full one!) or a small portion of sugar free jello mix.

I think the chocolate proteins are still too sweet, so I use the plain, add some
coco(the kind you cook w/that has no sugar, and a packet of splenda.

I also like the Nectar Lemonade flavor, it is a little sweet, but reminds me of
a cool lemonade.. add ice.

Chicken or beef broth both tasted really good when I was in the liquid stage.  So did tomato soup.

I had surgery 1-29-07 and am still mostly on protein shakes (thanks to an ulcer).  I found that using a whey protein added to a pudding mix is very good, you can use sugar free pudding and skim milk and its good in protein as well that way.

Not sure you have been approved yet for that, but if not you will be soon.  At this early stage for you, you will need to drink the protein drinks for now.  I don't know which ones you are drinking, but if you just buy the whey protein and add it to skim milk, they aren't sweet.

Good luck!

I too am also 7 weeks out... My surgery was Sept.21.. I go to the WLSC and we are to have 90g protein a day.. I still do a protein shake a day, that is the only way I would ever get in that much protein.. I am down 47 pounds.. I was 237 when I started and now 190!  I exercise every day for at least 30 mins... I take my time eating it takes me 30 mins to eat 3 oz of food , I make sure I chew chew chew so I don't get sick...I do get weighed everyday when I get on my wii fit... There are some days I wish I didn't.. My weight has slowed down to like 3 to 4 pounds a week loss now were it was like 7  pounds a weeks..
We are all different! The more we exercise the more muscle we build , so like Miryastar said if you don't see it on the scale you are more then likely seeing it in your clothes..
I'm sure you are doing just fine ! Take your time when you eat, make sure you stop your drinking 30 mins ahead and don't drink during your meal.. I wait 45 mins after I eat before I drink again.. I still fill full so I wait a little longer.. I have trouble getting in all 64 oz of fluids .. I usually only get in like 42 oz.. Keep UP the GOOD WORK ! It will come in due time!!!!! We are here to help each other !!!!

I think each doc is different. I was told to get at least 80 g protein daily; and that the only way to do that was by adding protein drinks. Maybe you are just developing muscle instead of loosing fat since it sounds like you are exercising alot. Have you noticed a big difference in sizes?
They say the smaller you are starting, the slower you loose the weight, not sure how much truth there is in that..but.

Be sure to take photos any time you have skin infection/irritation where the folds of skin are laying on each other.  This helps document the medical reasons for coverage of surgery to remove folds of excess skin.

Here’s a low carb salmon patty recipe:

Salmon Burger Patties

Ingredients:

Pink Salmon, Chicken of the Sea, skinless/boneless, chunk style in water, 14.75 oz

Progresso Bread Crumbs - Italian Style, .5 cup

Mayonnaise, Hellman's Light, 3 tbsp

Egg, fresh, 2 large beaten

Lemon juice, 2 tsp

Parsley, dried, 1 tbsp

Garlic powder, .25 tsp

Directions

Drain and flake the salmon into a medium mixing bowl.

Combine salmon, bread crumbs, onion, mayonnaise, lemon juice, egg, parsley and garlic powder - blend well.

Make 8 patties out of the mixture.

Spray a skillet with non-calorie no stick cooking spray. Put burner on medium.

Put patties into the skillet, heat both sides until they are browned, and the salmon patty is heated through.

Serve as is, or wrap in lettuce. You can also put on a bun of your choice (calories not added in).

Makes 8 patties.

I also accidentally found out to not push where we are in the eating schedule…ie liquids, soft foods, etc.  While I was making fruit smoothie cubes for my pets (I have sugar gliders) Saturday evening. I unthinkingly popped a piece of pineapple in my mouth…chewed it up and swallowed it!  Oops.  At the time I was only 12 days post-op.  This was NOT a smart thing to do.  I’ve been nauseated ever since and early this morning was in serious pain and vomiting, after a trip to the ER and some new meds, I’m no longer in pain or vomiting but am still nauseated.  It looks like I got lucky and will get through it without any serious harm but still!!!

Lesson learned:  DO NOT jump the gun on our eating schedules.  Our new little tummies just can’t take it!!

Pam

Hi guys. Just wanted to let you know I found a new cereal that tastes good and falls in our guidelines. I'm not big on eggs, and really missed my cereal.

I found Special K Protein Plus at Wal-mart. For a 3/4 c serving you get 10g protein and 9 net carbs. I only eat about 1/3c if even that much in skim milk after it gets soggy. That keeps me in my 8g carbs or less category. It's really good for a change, makes me feel normal!

Have a good day,
Rhonda

My doctor told me 2 years, and I've heard that a few other times. I think
because it gives your body a chance to stabalize and find out where you really
going to end up in the size range. It sounds like such a long time though
doesn't it!

Thanks for the idea--I am going to have to try that one!  I will be 7 months out on Friday, but I still have a hard time with lunch ideas, and I work 12 hour days, so I am usually still trying to stick with something semisoft and easy to digest to make sure that I don't have any problems at work.  I will try the pesto this week sometime, but I would love to hear feedback if you guys try it any sooner.

Have a wonderful day!!!

I get to start the soft food phase this Wednesday, and I already know how the current liquid phase is making me nuts so I’m on a soft-food recipe hunt.

Here’s one that I think if I mash the pesto together with the fish or shredded chicken would be soft enough to eat.  Anyone have any comments?  I do think the nutritional analysis is for the pesto only…not including the chicken or fish.

Protein Packed Pesto

SERVINGS: 4

INGREDIENTS

½ cup water

10oz package frozen, chopped spinach (thawed and well drained)

1/3 cup 1% cottage cheese

1/3 cup fresh basil (or 2 Tbsp dried basil) – fresh preferred

2 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese

1 Tbsp olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in blender or food processor

Blend or process until smooth

Spoon ½ cup of mixture on poultry or fish

NUTRITIONAL ANALYSIS PER SERVING (1/2 cup)

Calories: 77

Fat: 5 grams

Protein: 6 grams

Carbohydrate: 4 gram

Cholesterol: 3 mg

Sodium: 292 mg

Sugar: 1 gram

I get to start the soft food phase this Wednesday, and I already know how the current liquid phase is making me nuts so I’m on a soft-food recipe hunt.

Here’s one that I think if I mash the pesto together with the fish or shredded chicken would be soft enough to eat.  Anyone have any comments?  I do think the nutritional analysis is for the pesto only…not including the chicken or fish.

Protein Packed Pesto

SERVINGS: 4

INGREDIENTS

½ cup water

10oz package frozen, chopped spinach (thawed and well drained)

1/3 cup 1% cottage cheese

1/3 cup fresh basil (or 2 Tbsp dried basil) – fresh preferred

2 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese

1 Tbsp olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in blender or food processor

Blend or process until smooth

Spoon ½ cup of mixture on poultry or fish

NUTRITIONAL ANALYSIS PER SERVING (1/2 cup)

Calories: 77

Fat: 5 grams

Protein: 6 grams

Carbohydrate: 4 gram

Cholesterol: 3 mg

Sodium: 292 mg

Sugar: 1 gram

Anyone have any other recipes they’d like to share?

Pam

Hi Rhonda,

I'm in the same boat as you. I had surgery on the 12 of oct and I'm down 30lbs. I don't look at the scale anymore, why bother. I'm just happy to be healthier and I know the weight will come off.

Thanks,

Will White

I was chatting with my hubbie about this tonight…and he told me about a coworker of his that is trying to lose weight by doing protein shakes and eating a restricted calorie diet, essentially what we are doing, except for him it’s really, really hard because he’s still hungry.  The big advantage in using a surgical method is that, at least for a while anyway, our every food decision isn’t being overwhelmed by our stomachs demanding significant quantities of food.

I’m only 10 days post-op and I’ve lost about 12.5 lbs so far, and I’m NOT hungry.  I have to constantly remind myself to make sure I take in all the shakes & fluids I’m supposed to.

I’m really looking forward to the day I can eat real foods and savor them, without thinking I need to eat a whole plate full of it just cause I like it.

Pam

P.S.  Shyla…I found out the 40 gm Isopure is in the 20 oz bottles…but where did you find them locally? Thx!

Rhonda,

Wow! 28 pounds in only 23 days is awesome! You are doing great!! You are barely over I weeks! Pat yourself on the back!
Like Kathie said everyone is different in how quick they lose. Your first month is when you lose the most at once. I lost 26 pounds my first month. I would read some boards and see how some were losing 40 pounds and they had their surgery the same day as me. I knew I was doing what I was suppose to. As time went on some of them hit plateaus but I kept losing at my pace. I did not weigh myself except for my doctors appointments. It was exciting and something to look forward to. But it wasn't really so much about the weight but my health. You will find you may lose 10 pounds one month and 4 another. Don't get discouraged. It is all going to add up and you will feel so much better. You may not even notice the loss at first. But that first time you really see the difference you will feel so good. By next week you will really be able to feel it at the rate you are going. Hang in there. You think you could have lost it on your own but it probably would have come right back. This is going to be forever. Good luck!

Shya-Lea,

Where did you find the version with the Isopure with 40g of protein per bottle?  I went to the web-site to find out where I can get it and there it only mentions the version with 15 gms per bottle.

I know exactly what you mean Pam. Its so hard to explain that about how things just taste different. But it is so true! You really are starting anew. Never rule anthing out. The shakes do get old. They are almost too sweet. There are some isopure drinks out that aren't too bad and have 40g of protein in a bottle. They are more like a koolaid type drink so that shake consistency is gone. I know chicken broth never tasted so good. Just to have something salty instead of the sweet shake taste. There isn't protein but it does count for your liquid. Tomato soup was also good. I believe there are some flavor free protein supplements you can add.

I’m only 10 days post-op but I’ve tried it both ways (although with 1% milk) and find it depends on the shake.  I’m finding that I need to switch between the shakes and other drinks, such as tomato juice, V-8, low carb drinks, broth, etc…or I end up sort of tired of the shakes.  But I’m also finding that things that tasted one way before the surgery taste differently now.  It’s interesting.

Good Luck

Pam

I'm getting nervous the closer it gets. I know I will be better on the other side. I'm trying to get my kitchen ready for my new eating style. Does everyone use water with their protein shakes or have you tired using a lactose free low carb milk? I tried a shake for lunch just to see what it was like. It was ok. I never really thought about the difference in consistancy between milk and water. It tasted like a watered down YooHoo (don't care for them). I have many other flavors and brands to try. Any suggestions?

Have you tried skim milk? I was and am still able to tolerate milk. Skim milk is great because we still need our vitamin d and calcium. Especially women. I know a lot become lactose intolerant afterwards. Also believe it or not but your tastes will change after surgery. Things you like and tolerate before you may just gag at the thought of it after surgery. Just like you may also not like it prior but after it tastes good or you tolerate it better. You will do great. Make sure you get that water in too! That is so important!
