Hi Pam,
I live on the Eastern Shore of Virginia so I have had the same issue with support groups. This group is great for answering any questions or when I have any doubts. I am currently waiting for my surgery date. The insurance company gave me the approval next week. Good luck on your journey with your son.
Lisa

Pam,
From my personal experience, I am glade that I had the Gastric Bypass. From what I understand is that you loose weight faster with the Gastric Bypass than you would with the Lap Band. Both are GREAT TOOLS but for me I chose the Gastric Bypass route. The Gastric bypass is major surgery and you have to be prepared mentally for this journey and not take it lightly. Allot has changed since I had my surgery as to the time line, and it also depends on the Dr. that you go to and what there offices time line is. My Dr. was Dr. Clarke at Weight Loss Surgery Center of Hampton Roads and I think that he is just the best. I and many others that I have met has ha a great experience with his staff and I can not speak higher of anyone!!! I was in the hospital for 3 to 4 days. I went in on a Wed. and went home on Sat. I think. I had the cut with the Gastric and not Laprocospicly. He support group is important for once you go through this you must continue to educate yourself about things and you get so much from the group as far as their experiences. Let me know if there are any other questions that you may have..
Tell Shean I said Hello!! and this is just the beginning to a awesome new chapter in his life!!!
Best Regards,
Terry

We have done alot of research and I think that one is the best one for his age. I am so scared for him but I am more scared for him not to get this done. Once we finish the support group meetings how long does it take to actually get the surgery? We have to go to a siminar and then 2 support groups before we see the Dr. Is that normal? I realize that we will need to continue to go to support groups afterwards. But I was just wondering what the timeline was. How long were in the hospital for after the surgery? Did you get laproscopic? Thanks again, Pam

I am Terry Anderson and I am a 40 year old that had Gastric Bypass July 7, 2004. I use to weigh 420 lbs. and loss 230 lbs. I have gained a few lbs. back but I feel great. Who is doing you sons surgery? Where will he have the surgery? All I can say is that this will be a new beginning for him and will not regret it as long as he follows his doctors advice. Is he going to have Gastric or Lap-band?
If you have not started going to your local support group meetings I would strongly recommend it. It is important that he connects with a few people going through the same experience at the same time. The reason for this is that he will have a built in support group experiencing things simultaneously. That was a big thing for me when I went through it because I could call him and ask him what he had ate and how he was doing.
Alot of Female patience have the surgery I felt that it was important to have another male to talk to. Men and womens bodies are different as we all know so I thought having anther guy to talk to beneficial. If you should have any other questions please feel free to ask. I have spoken to our groups support group meeting several times and if there is not another guy going through the surgery at the same time I would be more than happy to talk with him and keep him motivated.
He will do fine just support him in this and let him know that everything will be ok!!! I do not mean to sound like it is a walk in the park, but if he remembers that
the surgery is a tool in which will allow him to learn new and effective eating habits he will be fine.
Please ask as many questions that you need we will all be here to support you and your son on his journey.
Best Regards,
Terry L. Anderson
