The state chapter is still going, but slowly. The SBAA changed charters and
each "chapter" now has to have at least something like $50,000 to be a
member and considered a Chapter. SBANC doesn't have that much. So Kim
still is executive director but we aren't listed as part of the SBANC
anymore due to lack of funds. I had tried to do a support group in this
area but no one came. We tried Winston first, ten moved to Greensboro. We
never had but a couple of people. I am no longer on the SBANC Board but
Julie is listed as support group leader now. I think she may be VP as well,
but I am not sure as I am out of the loop. My name and number are still
listed on the SBANC website so I still get calls occasionally, mostly about
groups wanting to do reports or studies on kids with special needs for a
school project. Every now and then I get a parent calling. It'd be great
if we could have a place to talk about our used equipment and maybe loaning
it out to other SBANC members. We have kept JG's old wheelchair for now to
use in smaller spaces but before long, she won't fit in the old chair. I
know someone that was looking to re-home an EasyStand mobile stander.

Al, I think you're right.? If memory serves me correctly (and it doesn't
always) I think it was Thoms Rehabilitation in those parts that had an SB
clinic.? I do know that you can go online to the National Chapter and look
up all active state chapters.? I didn't see NC listed anymore which leads me
to believe the state association is defunct as well.? I honestly don't
know.? But even though I am in Fayetteville, if you folks decide to get
something going again and need some help doing some networking, don't
hesitate to ask.? I think I have a few contacts left that can help you out.

Hi Shelly,
I am not so concerned about the clinic, as we get good
care from Shriners. But, I would really like to get
Ana around some other kids with SB, as she is
mainstreamed in school, she sometimes asks questions,
like why is she the only kid with crutches and braces,
or the only kid in a wheelchair, etc. If we can get
something together, will try to get all the help we
can, including our friend Shelly in Fayetteville!

I would very much like to part of a group. Please keep me posted. I have added
you to IM yahoo if you have it feel free to add me too. Are you a adult with SB
or are you a parent of a child with SB?

I was going to suggest the same thing that you folks in that area do some
networking together and perhaps rebuild the Western NC chapter.? I'm sure the
hospital in Asheville would allow you to advertise during their clinic (do they
still have an SB clinic) that you are trying to rebuild the group.?? It just
takes interested parties!

Hi Shelly,
I used to live in Clemmons. My parents live there and I used to live with them
until I moved into my apartment in Feb. 2007. I am fortunate that my apartment
is right in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem where the public bus system
runs. It only costs 50 cents for elderly and disabled to ride, $1 for everyone
else. There is also Trans-Aid which is primarily for people with disabilities.
They aren't as reliable though as the regular bus system. I was able to take
driver's ed and get my driver's license in 2005. I drove a car equipped with
hand controls...that is, until I totaled it in October of 2006. Unfortunately,
I don't have the money right now for another car, but I can still get around
thanks to the bus system.

Hi Shelly...not sure if you remember me from years ago. I was on the Board
way back. I also met Joanne Mackey at one time. Julia Grace is now 12. We
live in Clemmons. Did you say you had a shunt (working) for 22 years? Wow!
Maybe there is hope that JG isn't headed towards a malfunction. Her is
almost 13 years old and it scares me that it could go any time...much more
so than from ages 4-10. I sure wish we had more resources in NC so people
could get together more often. JG plays basketball in Charlotte with the
Rollin' Bobcats and lots of the kids have SB, so she gets to see others,
plus she goes to Camp Carefree and next year, we hope, to Victory Junction
again.

January.? We have transportation issues in Fayetteville so that is primarily
the reason I don't live away from home.? What has Winston got?

Please remember to change the subject heading. Apparently it has changed from my

JG plays basketball in Charlotte with the
Rollin' Bobcats and lots of the kids have SB, so she gets to see others,
plus she goes to Camp Carefree and next year, we hope, to Victory Junction
again.

Lisa, that is so cool. How do you like it? I have family in Winston and
Clemmons.?? I'm in Fayetteville, quite a bit older than you, I will be 40 in
January.? We have transportation issues in Fayetteville so that is primarily
the reason I don't live away from home.? What has Winston got?

Hi Joanne, nice to hear from you.? Yeah, I've had two shunt revisions in the
last four years after going 22 years without having one.? I also have lymphedema
in my legs that is being treated in Fayetteville.? That's my biggest hurdle the
last few years.? Lots of infections from the weeping it will do from time to
time, etc.?? My birth father died last September from lung cancer, Frankie had a
heart attack and didn't work for four months, and Mom had atrial fibrillation
that has been being treated for the last 6 months after she spent a week at Cape
Fear.? She still works with the psychiatric hospital at Cape Fear although now
with adults.? Frankie is retiring in January.? There are 9 grandkids in this
family.?? My sister has two of her own, a stepson that she and his father are
raising, Chris married in 2001 and his wife had two children from a previous
marriage, plus they have had two of their own, and Tonia has two teenagers.??
Her husband Matt just retired from the Army and they have settled here.??
I spent three days at Duke in November myself we thought I was having shunt
failure again but it was a MRSA infection in my leg and a pretty severe case of
a urinary tract infection.? I still have the urostomy pouch that was done by the
doctor that was there prior to George Webster (yeah that was 32 years ago) but
Cary Z had previously talked to me (like when I was in my early 20's) about the
Mitrofanoff and ACE procedures.? I dismissed him at the time because quite
honestly I was fed up with surgeries and of course in our youth we try to avoid
as much of that as possible.?? However, I am at a point now with these issues
that the urostomy is not serving me well and I've never had good bowel issues,
so I am going to talk with Cary Z when I see them again in October to see what
they feel in regards to me being a candidate for these procedures irregardless
of whether they would want to perform them.?? I'll be 40 in January 2009.? Time
flies when you are living life.? Notice I did not say having fun.? It fell to me
to advocate for my father and make arrangements for his hospice care (he had
lung cancer), and ultimately we have an inpatient hospice here in town that I
placed him in for his last few days and then it fell to me to arrange his
funeral arrangements which weren't that hard since he was from Pittsboro, I went
with that.??
I figured you were still at Duke.? You know even though folks change positions
and things change around a bit, the same people seem to stay at Duke for a long
time so I've always known that even if I get to Duke and run across an issue I'm
not familiar with, that I can page you and you'd find me the answer :)
Take care, it's good to hear from you!

I'm in Fayetteville which is about 3 hours from Charlotte.?? I'm not sure what
is
going on with the state association anymore or if the Charlotte or Asheville
support groups are still active.? I am the former Executive Director of the
state
association, but resigned due to family and health reasons in 2000.?? We used to
have a 1-800 # with the state office and I turned it over to the gal that
replaced
me in 2000 who lives in Iron Station outside of Charlotte. I'm not sure if they
still have it or if the number is still active even but here it is, you can call
it and see if it's active and see what if anything is going on.? I know our
Fayetteville group which my Mom was president of is defunct due to lack of
participation, as well as ongoing health issues with me.? But here's the state #
call it and see if you get even the recording anymore 1-800-847-2262.?? If not,
I
don't know where to lead you because I've been out of the loop the last 8 years
or
so and I don't even attend the comprehensive SB clinics anymore......... my
lifestyle is such that it's more productive for me to go to the separate urology
and neurosurgery clinics at Duke.? I do know that the gentleman that was leading
the Asheville group when I resigned from the state board of directors, passed
away
about 5 years ago.? I'm not sure the group got back on it's feet afterwards.
Hope that helps!!?

Hi all,
I wanted to let everyone know about an upcoming event this summer for
youth with disabilities. It will be an intensive 3 day leadership
development forum for youth ages 16-28. The forum will be held July
12th-15th at UNC-Pembroke. Lodging, food, and accomodations are free
for delegates selected. Participants will stay in accesible dorms on
campus. Anyone who lives in NC, has a disability and is 16-28 is
eligible to attend. The forum will focusing on different forms of
leadership development within disability advocacy and activism both on
the local and national level. We will be selecting 40 delegates from
all across NC to attend. We are specifically looking for youth with
disabilities who have some leadership experience or who show
leadership potential. Please spread the word to youth who may be
interested. Email me at either rypinion@... or
ncyouthforum@... if you would like an application. You can also
email me or post back if you have any questions concerning the event
or application process We really want to make the participation
diverse as far as the disabilities and the regions across the state
represented. Please disperse this announcement far and wide.
Thanks,
The NC Youth Leadership Forum Committee

will be moving back to the US in the next 6-7 months. The reason I am
writing is because I will be moving possibly to either the Charlotte
area or Rutherfordton area of North Carolina. All depends on where my
dad's job takes him. He has been offered several option. I was
wondering if there was any support for adults with SB in either of
those areas? I am looking at in the next year of becoming independent
living on my own. I know of a program in PA, where we are orginally
from and there is that possiblity that we might move to PA but in
case the NC opportunities come through I wanted to see what kinds of
things there might be for me in NC.
I hope this makes sense and if anyone would like to communicate with
me off list feel free to email me at christine1970_2000@...
Thanks
Christine
Hi Kathy,
We are in Asheville. Our 9yo daughter "Ana" has SB. We
cath for urine and she has a MACE procedure for bowel.
She walks with crutches and braces, but uses a
wheelchair for longer distances. She is very smart and
is mainstreamed in 3rd grade.
We have not had any difficulty (yet) with the other
kids. They have not noticed yet that Ana wears
pull-up's. She had one 'accident' at school last year,
but the teacher and aid handled the situation quickly
and were able to get her out of the room before the
other students knew what was going on. Of course, with
the wheelchair and crutches and all of that, the kids
already know Ana is 'different'.
I would suggest talking with the teacher about your
concerns and asking for feedback about how the
socialization with other kids is going. I know some
parents have prepared little 5 minute presentations
where they go to the class and 'teach' the classmates
about SB. In our case, the teachers suggested that it
wasn't necessary, as there had not been any problems,
and they did not want to emphasize Ana's differences.
Last, but not least, I think we need to teach our kids
to be thick-skinned and encourage their self-esteem
and resilience. I am able-bodied, but when I was a kid
they picked on me for acne and being fat, so if it is
not the SB, the kids would find something else. This
is what kids tend to do.
Regarding the list, it has been my experience that it
does not get much traffic, regardless of the time of
year. Please feel free to keep in touch, though.

Hi, I'm Kathy - I know boards can get quiet around the holidays, just
wondering if this board is still active?
My godson Christopher has SB Occulta, he's 8 and was just diagnosed
this past summer. I am still learning much about this and came upon
this site.
His teachers at school are not helpful with the regimented bathroom
trips. I had remembered that my eldest son had a 504 plan in school
for his diabetes, and found on the SBA pre-made 504 forms - YEAH!
This will help his family.
How would SB be best explained to my little one who is 7 and is best
friends with with Christopher. So far he has not been aware of any BM
accidents, he has never commented on the fact that Christopher now
wears pull ups. (They have been friends since my son was born, the
incontinence didn't become a problem until last school year).
Christopher is sure that when his friends find out that he has
accidents and can't control it that they will not want to be friends
anymore. I'm sure that is a normal fear given the age and situation.
Thanks for any info, Kathy

You want a bowel routine. Talk to your Dr at your SB clinic. We use a cone enema
and have been essentially accident free since getting the routine down. We
started at about your son's age. If you don't have an SB clinic, make an
appointment at Shriners Hospital in Greenville, SC. Tell them you want to see
Jean Brown while you are there. The care is completely free, and Jean is
nationally known as the poop nurse. She knows more about pooping than you would
think there is to be known. She will ask you many questions about diet,
frequency, consistency, etc and make a recommendation to put you on the path to
bowel continence.
Good luck
Yacqueline,
I can tell you what I chose to do, whether it is best or not, but it works for
us. I chose to put John under a 504 plan with only one accommodation which was
being able to use the staff bathroom. I chose this because I wanted John's
school experience to be free of any children knowing he wore diapers etc. I
know that I only have a few years to keep him safe from children realizing that
he may do things differently. I wanted John to focus on school academics and
not worry about the bathroom. I can help him at home on that. What I do is I
get to school at 7:30am. I change him in the staff bathroom before my students
arrive. He comes to my room at 10:15am just before lunch to be changed, 12:30pm
after play time and my mom picks him up at 3:00pm and changes as soon as she
gets home. I did have a 1:30pm time scheduled but he was barely wet so we took
it off the schedule. I will say that I am VERY fortunate to work with great
teachers. His teacher's first words to me was don't worry about a thing I will
take care of him. Although I chose to be the primary person to change John it
does not take away from my teacher duties as I have the time scheduled during
specials or playtime for my room as well. If I am not there the teacher changes
him. If he has a accident like a BM during the day and the teacher smells him
she just sends him to me. It has been wonderful to see John excel academically.
The total changing time is about 4 mins. John gets all his supplies out himself.
I hope this helps, just remember to make their school years the most positive
experience as possible.
Sherry

Sherry I am in the same situation you are. I'm just found out about
your e-mail and I would like to know if you already got some
suggestions about your problem. I am a school teacher also and I am
thinking about enrolling my son soon here. Please let me know what
you found out. My situation is like yours. I am surprised.

The good thing is I will be teaching at the same school that he will
be at. I need advice! He is not cathed and he wears diapers /
goodnites. I have been working on a bowel program and he has been
consistent on most days. Do you allow him to go to the restroom
with the class and manage on his own and if he needs to be changed
he can come and get me or do I just set a schedule for him to use
the private bathroom and I meet him there? What have others done
who have children that are not cathed yet? I don't want him to be
dependent on me, but I want him to feel comfortable as he starts
school. Background info: He walks with braces but has good balance
and can pull down clothes and pull them up etc. He had not been
telling be when he has to use the bathroom or when he has a bowel
movement. I get upset because I think he plays me because he may
not be able to feel it, but he should be able to smell! Has other
parents experienced this and if so when did your child tell you they
were wet or had a bowel movement? I feel so fortunate to be able to
be at the same school to ensure he is well taken care of but I don't
want to hold him back. I have never treated him differently! Also,
do any of you have a toileting plan or a medical plan in place for
your child? If so could you share?

I have a son of 3 years old and I would like to hear from you all
about the bowel movement control. I have haerd too many things but i
have not tried any. Doctors suggested me to use a syringe,
suppositories, etc.. but I am afraid to damage something else on him.
i want to hear about your experience. Please let me know about how to
manage this situation in the school.
May God Bless you all
