that 62% of adults in the U.S. use some form of CAM Complementary
and Alternative Medicine. This would include such things as prayer,
natural products, deep breathing exercises, meditation, chiropractic
care, yoga, massage and diet-based therapies. It has been estimated
that the U.S. public spent between $36 billion and $47 billion on
CAM therapies in 1997 alone and that this is increasing annually as
many continue to look for alternative healthcare solutions in order
to save money and stay healthy.
Exhibitors, speakers, and psychic readers from all over Texas are

Located in the heart of the Concho Valley, San Angelo is in the
center of a place that has been a crossroads for many people at many
times. We live in a time of rapid change. Everyone seems to be
seeking answers to life's big questions as new ideas and information
are filling the planet. It can be a challenge to find stability and
meaning in the outer world. The intention of the Wholistic Rodeo is
to assist everyone who attends to find their own truth and wisdom.
We can all find love, stability, good health, and inner peace. The
Wholistic Rodeo is organized by Intuitive counselor and Spiritual
development teacher Egan Sanders who works and resides in San
Angelo. The Wholistic Rodeo is sponsored by the Expanding Light
Calendar, a holistic publication in San Angelo, and by Cassy's
Multicultural Gifts and Healing Centre of Abilene, Texas.
Wholistic Rodeo: Health Mind Spirit Expo a Sign of The Times
We live in a time of rapid change. It can be a challenge to find
stability, meaning and consistent well-being in our daily lives. As
technology races forward, we are faced with many situations: rising
healthcare costs, increased stress levels, and economic, political
and social uncertainty. How can we effectively deal with the unknown?
The Wholistic Rodeo: Health Mind Spirit Expo is an event that
can be seen as a sign of the times. Almost every weekend an event of
this type is being held somewhere in the United States, attended by
people from all walks of life, looking for healthier lifestyles,
more self-understanding, and greater purpose in their lives.
A 2002 study from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) found
that 62% of adults in the U.S. use some form of CAM Complementary
and Alternative Medicine. This would include such things as prayer,
natural products, deep breathing exercises, meditation, chiropractic
care, yoga, massage and diet-based therapies. It has been estimated
that the U.S. public spent between $36 billion and $47 billion on
CAM therapies in 1997 alone and that this is increasing annually as
many continue to look for alternative healthcare solutions in order
to save money and stay healthy.
Today many adults opt to be more holistic in their lifestyle choices
without even knowing it. A holistic approach to health and fitness
is one that focuses on the combination of lifestyle, physical
health, mental and emotional wellness, and spiritual awareness.
Standard medicine addresses symptoms - primarily seeing illness as a
breakdown in the machinery of the human body, alone. Alternative
medicine, or holistic health, involves the treatment of the whole
person body, mind and spirit, and how those connections, together,
impact health and well being.
As an example, cardiovascular disease risk factors (heart attack and
stroke) include smoking, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet,
obesity, heredity and emotional factors such as depression, anxiety
and hostility. It has been clearly documented that emotional trauma
increases the likelihood of illness and weakens the body. Treatment
with medication is typically the first way of responding to illness,
but perhaps examining how a person thinks or feels might be an
equally important diagnostic tool as well?
Several key topics will be addressed at the Wholistic Rodeo,
reflecting national and international trends in health, wellness,
and personal and spiritual growth:
Diet: It is a fact that two-thirds of Americans are overweight or
obese which is the cause of multiple health problems and contributes
to out of control healthcare spending. What people eat and how they
eat is vitally important. Wal-Mart, the nations largest retailer,
which draws 100 million customers to its stores every week, recently
announced that it plans to double its offerings of organic food
products to it's customers. Studies show that a majority of U.S.
consumers buy at least some organic food on a regular basis because
it is generally thought of as healthier than processed foods. Rusty
and Bret Adams will be discussing the science of good nutrition and
weight control in their talk entitled, "Energize me!"
Relationships: The pace and demands of modern life can stress our
relationships. Maintaining healthy and happy relationships requires
practicing the skills of communication and self-awareness. Kathy
Goodenbour-Mursch will present a talk entitled, Strengthening
Relationships, which will examine, among other things, how to heal
negative childhood experiences that may affect relationships later
in life.
Abundance: The economy seems to be going through a transition with
globalization and the growth of Internet commerce. There seems to be
more ways to earn a living available today than ever before. Jean
McClelland, founder and president of Praxis and Praxis Reports, and
a corporate consultant for Fortune 100 companies, will present, "Be
Naturally Prosperous".
Environment: Our surroundings at home or work have a big impact on
our well being. Color, light, natural elements, and even location
can affect us as much as air quality. Stacy Davenport will explain
the dynamic connection between your space and your life. Learn the
basics of Feng Shui, the study of how the natural forces in our
environment can affect prosperity, health, and happiness.
Massage: Massage has been proven to reduce stress and is very
helpful in the healing process. Every human being has a need for
touch and the therapeutic benefits of a good massage are many. Three
massage therapists will be at the Wholistic Rodeo providing various
forms of massage for attendees. In addition, Nurse Cyndi Hughs will
present information and a demonstration of abdominal massage
techniques that address problems related to pelvic and abdominal
organs.
Emotional Health: Rita B. DeShields will look at how our thoughts
and emotions create our lives, health, relationships, and
temperament. Her talk, "The Joy of Breathing," will show how
conscious, diaphragmatic breathing quiets the mind, relaxes the
body, and promotes better concentration. It can also resolve
stress, revitalize your energy level, improve relationships and
expand your consciousness. Rita has been using this technique for 12
years with individuals, groups, retreats and Intensives.
Guidance: When used with critical thinking and common sense,
spiritual and/or psychic guidance can be very helpful. History is
full of people who have sought information of a psychic nature to
assist them. When Ronald Reagan was President, he reportedly used an
astrologer to plan his itinerary and important events, and the
psychic Edgar Cayce, the sleeping prophet, is said to have been
sought out by many influential people, including U.S. Presidents,
for predictive information. It is now a common practice for law
enforcement to get leads and assistance in investigations
from `psychic' detectives. The truth is that everyone is psychic;
some are just more gifted. We would all like the ability to peer
into the future to gain insights. When used intelligently, and in a
balanced manner, such information can be part of the decision making
process. The Wholistic Rodeo will have psychic and intuitive readers
available to share their abilities to assist people in gaining such
insight. Pet Psychic Myra Logan from Houston will be among this
group. Myra often works in conjunction with veterinary clinics. In
addition to consultations, she conducts seminars on animal
communication, and she is a frequent guest speaker for various
groups. Myra has been retained as the Animal Communicator for the
annual Iron Dogs Training Camp in Kerrville, and she makes frequent
public appearances sponsored by businesses. Myra has been featured
on several Houston TV newscasts, including NBC Channel 2, Fox 26, WB
39, Houston PBS Living Smart and in several publications, such as,
The Pasadena Citizen Newspaper and The Sun. She is one of three
psychics retained by Channel 2 Houston to speak with Radar The
Weather Dog.
NEW ADVANCED TRAINING PROGRAM FOR MASSAGE THERAPISTS
Advanced Holistic Healing Arts is offering a new
Clinical Training Program - 300 hours
Begins April 1
We have designed an advanced program that is targeted, comprehensive, and highly
valuable. Our program, Advanced Massage for Clinical Practice, is designed to
provide the
background and skills to work confidently with clients who are seeking help to
reduce pain
and movement restrictions. The Advanced Massage for Clinical Practice program
teaches
therapists to assess, treat, and evaluate clients. It also provides providing
the tools and
skills for clinical support and business success.
Clinical massage involves the manipulation of soft tissues to resolve acute and
chronic
pain and dysfunction. Clinical massage also stimulates and supports the
therapist's
creativity and desire to be a truly effective healer, allowing the therapist to
focus on the
individual's needs. The tools learned in this program are valuable tools for
therapists
working with clients who have injuries from chronic illness, accidents, or
sports, and those
working with athletes and "weekend warriors" to prevent injury and achieve peak
performance.
The Advanced Massage for Clinical Practice program begins with the basics of
assessment
and takes the therapist through the planning and implementation stages, with
techniques
that include trigger point therapy, myofascial release, postural analysis, range
of motion
testing, stretching, and other manual therapy techniques. Information on
business
practices and medical terminology will help you create the practice you choose
to help
your clients.
The Advanced Massage for Clinical Practice program prepares professional
therapists to
address specific postural and structural issues presented by clients. The manual
techniques and skills taught are designed to enable the therapist to effectively
make a
difference in their clients' lives. The business techniques and skills taught
are intended to
give the therapist the ability to be marketable in practicing a highly valued
health service
and to be successful in the business of healing.

I think you'll find San Antonio is quite a bit a tad smaller, and the
community much more Conservative about massage than Seattle; in other
words a lot of folks still refer to massage parlors, ugh. I am not
connected with many who do anything other than solo; but you might
look up therapists on the Southwestern Bell Smart Pages in San
Antonio to start finding out info. I have a large group and a large
facility, yet am looking for long term employees. Still please email
me off line and I'd be happy to try to point you in the right
direction.

There is a website at the Texas Department of Health Services -
Massage Therapy that will give you all the requirements for a massage
establishment in addition to the MT requirements. If you open under
a business name you'll have to have the necessary inspections -- all
detailed on the website. Actually, there are still City Codes
regarding licensing for massage; tho still on the books they defer to
the State Regulations and there is nothing you need per se from the
city, or the County (Bexar).
Also - how do I register to be a Texas State

You don't register here in Texas -- it's a matter of finding out
which ones do cover it, most are affinity (discounted prices to
recipients) vs medical coverage, though it is growing. PIP is also
used alot, but you simply to your own billing on a case by case basis.

Best of Luck
Hello! I just moved here 2 weeks ago from Seattle. I'm in license
limbo as I wait to get my Texas Massage Registration/Licensure, but
I'm trying to get a head start on opening my practice.
I am in San Antonio, and would love to find a location to open a small
version of my "ultimate" plan for the 1st year or so. I need a
beautiful massage room to rent or contract out of for a reasonable
rate or percentage. Can anyone help?
I also need to know what business licenses are necessary... State
business license I assume, but are there city, county or other's I
need to be looking into? Also - how do I register to be a Texas State
L&I provider? What Health insurance companies are providers for Texas,
I noticed that First Choice Health is not an option for me here as it
was in Seattle.
Thanks for any help you can dish out!

Sharon Puszko, Ph. D., C.M.T., Owner, Director, Dean of Continuing Ed., Instructor, Therapist
Day-Break Geriatric Massage Institute
Offices in Indiana, Florida, & California
The workshop will introduce the participant to the physiology and psychology of a long life and their effects on one's health. But it is not presented as a dry college type lecture; rather it is a practical and hands-on collaboration between instructor and participants. Come join us! nter
The Day-Break Geriatric Massage Institute's Level One Certification will be held February, 24th, 25th and26th, 2006.The program will be presented by Sharon Puszko, Ph.D., C.M.T., who travels and lectures nationally to present this unique information designed to help people feel more comfortable about working with an aging population with techniques that improve quality of life and help to bring back lost abilities to those in need of skilled touch. This workshop is mostly designed to educate therapists to the needs of this special population, but is intended to educate anyone who wants to be comfortable hands-on with an elder in need. The weekend will finish with a hands-on clinic of volunteers (ages 55 and over) for participants to apply a variety of techniques in a very practical manner to become comfortable with this information and promptly put it to use.
Level 1- Geriatric Massage Workshop
This 2 1/2 day weekend workshop is the basis for our training program in Geriatric Massage. It offers 17 CEU contact hours for Massage Therapists and qualifies for the Level 1 Certificate in Geriatric Massage. By helping participants to gain insight into meaningful work with the elderly, the therapist who likes to work with seniors is put on the path to a massage career that is emotionally satisfying and financially promising without being physically draining.
THE WORKSHOP DEALS WITH THESE TOPICS:
1. Physiological, psychological & sociological aspects of aging. A brief introduction into the riddle of "aging". 2. Client assessment, cautions & contraindications. Psychological aspects of contact with the elderly, attention to detail in the assessment of the older client. 3. Modification of standard massage techniques and development of special methods to suit each client's special needs. Participants are encouraged to think independently in their first hands-on phase of the presentation. 4. Practical hands-on work with older people. It is impossible to understand the need for different approaches when working with the elderly unless it has been practiced on the real thing. Therefore, the last day of the workshop is spent working hands-on with elderly volunteers. 5. How to establish a Geriatric Massage practice - Assists in starting your geriatric massage practice.
The geriatric massage workshop is of special interest to the mature massage therapist and the advanced student, as well as nurses, nurse assistants, chiropractors, home health aids, physical therapists, occupational therapists and all other health care personnel that have been or are presently working with the elderly. We help participants lose their apprehension towards the elderly, the most underserved of any age group, so they can confidently solicit clients. Immediately following the workshop, one can begin to include the elderly among clientele. This greatly enhances earning potential. It is a fallacy to believe that work with the elderly has to be pro bono. The majority of the elderly are quite well off, willing and able to pay for services directed towards health improvement.
The DAYBREAK Geriatric Massage Workshop differs from most other massage workshops because it is not teaching only a particular technique, but how to combine what the participant knows already with a number of new hands-on and conceptual approaches, and then to apply them to the specific needs of the elderly client. The fee for the course is $300.00 payable by check or cash to Therapeutic Touch Services,12018 Scribe Dr., Austin, TX 78759 by 2/21/06. Light refreshments will be provided, with adequate breaks for mealtimes. Any inquiries may be forwarded to me at sullivan@..., or 512-589-5278.
I have posted a poll on CTX Massage Yahoo group I would like to
invite you to participate.
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CentralTexasMassage/
"500 hours or TWo-Tier? Texas currently requires 300 hours of basic
massage therapy education for a student to become licensed. A school
can teach no more or no less than 300 hours. Most therapists believe
more hours should be available to students, if they wish. Do you
believe Texas massage law should require all new therapists to have
500 hours or more of massage therapy training? All existing LMT's who
have under 300 hours would be grandfathered into licensing, and only
if they let their license lapse for 90 days or more, would not be
required to get more education. Or, do think Texas should change it's
law to allow for a two Tier Program? This law would allow all
existing therapists who wish to pay an additional fee to grandfather
into the Master Massage Therapist licensing. A licensed massage
therapist with 300 hours or more would be allowed to do relaxation
massage only and not take doctor referrals, bill PIP, charge Medical
Saving Accounts or Medical Flex Plans, while a master massage
therapist would be allowed to take doctor referals, and bill and
charge the afore mentiond."
I did a poll that ended Monday asking the following: no changes, 300
hours no cap, 500 hours or two tier. The poll resulted in 1 vote for
no changes and the rest were distributed pretty equally between 500
hours and two tier. If you have the time and gumption, please
participate. All votes are confidential, which means I will not get
your name or email address when you vote, and all members of CTX
massage Yahoo group will be emailed the results. You will need to
join the group to vote.
I am using this poll for my own resources. I was involved in the
last legislative session as a private MT and a representative for
TAMT, supporting increasing the hours to a minimum of 500 for basic
massage education. So much has changed and we have learned so much
about each other and the profession, I would like to see where
everyone stands in this issue, in case any legislature comes up again
in 2007 and I am asked to get involved. I will do nothing unless I
know the massage community is behind any given changes. The price is
too high for the profession and me personally.
Thanks
Vicki Matthews

(This is legit. Not looking or soliciting anything erotic or sensual in
nature. Sorry...have to mention that...too many weirdos out

5. How to establish a Geriatric Massage practice - Assists in starting your geriatric massage practice.

how many of you have made new years resolutions to get in shape in 2006?
structural integration bodywork is a great way to put yourself in balance, harmony and proper postural alignment structutal integration would be a perfect compliment to your new exercise program
if you are not exercising, structural integration would help you gain more body awareness as well as emotional and spiritual well-being
i have five spots open for my next round of structural integration series
i am compiling structural integration cases as part of my certification to eventually teach the myopractic version of structural integration
i am currently certified to teach the six myopractic deep muscle therapy courses
i offer my structural integration series at a discount in order to encourage those who might not have the financial means to get this kind of work
nationwide, this kind of work goes for between $75 to $120 per session
currently, i am offering the ten-session series for $45 per session
if you are interested, you will need to block out the appropriate amount of time the sessions should be done at least once a week for the ten week period ideally, they could be done every three to five days that's an option
i take "before" and "after" photos so we can monitor changes
the myopractic structural integration bodywork comes from ida p. rolf's pioneering work
the myopractic approach emphasizes pain-free application and not working beyond the client's barriers
if you are interested or have any questions, please contact me via e-mail and i will respond promptly
thanks for your patience and attention best wishes to all for a joyous and prosperous 2006!
I believe the Academy is a very good school, and the best in San Antonio based on the output I've seen from a Technical (Hands-On) standpoint of any of the local schools. I believe all the schools are lacking on the realities of employment of business planning however. Roughly ~80% of licensed therapists are not able to 'make it' by the end of their first year; a huge disappointment after a considerable investment. Get a well-rounded opinion and inputs from businesses, therapists and schools. Schools are quite competitive and are naturally focused on building 'their business' as they are a for-profit institution as well.
As an employer -- I would suggest to any prospective student to become very aware of education/qualifications/quality of schooling as it relates to our profession at large. There are different types of schooling available -- with coursework that 'qualifies' as A or B level courses if one is interested in National Certification without taking additional courses. There are schools in Texas who offer this level of curriculum though none in San Antonio that I know of. You can become registered in Texas and practice without taking A or B level courses, and the Academy is one -- though they have a great technical instructors/curriculum for entry level therapists. The depth of education needed should be determined by your career plan, the type of work you wish to do and the setting that you want to work in. Traditional schooling will be adequate for Swedish Massage in most cases, but the majority (+80%) of clients we see expect more advanced skills; the public has become fairly knowledgeable in their expectations of massage, and a majority of clients these days are pretty experienced. What ever you choose -- plan to educate yourself for a lifetime to 'keep up' with the profession.
Review past issues of the Massage Therapy Journal (AMTA) and Massage & Bodywork for enlightenment about types of technical work and industry issues, you can also read Massage Today on line -- these are the most widely read in the massage industry specifically. If you'd like to work in a Spa/Salon catch up with Salon Today, Spa Management Journal, Renew or Dermascope -- these publications deal with Massage / Massage Therapist issues quite a lot. Few MTs are adequately prepared for the type of work done in spas -- at least to the business' needs and expectations of MTs. Very little of these issues are discussed in publications on the Massage side of the house publications. For example -- a Nail Technician or Esthetician has a 700 hour initial training requirement, MTs 300, quite a difference.
More than ever, it's important to have a really strong sense of what you plan to do with your profession, before heading off to school, to ensure you've made the right selection to accomplish your goals -- one size doesn't fit all.
Lastly, I'd encourage you to speak with others who currently practice in the area your planned area of interest. Get their recommendations and input -- they will have invaluable insight and suggestions. Schools are one source of information -- the reality of business life and succeeding in your profession is another. It takes years to build a successful practice of your own as well as regular clientele if you're working as an employee. While it's very rewarding -- it also takes much patience and for most people, a sizeable financial reserve to see your dreams come true, so plan well.
Best Wishes,
Jann Henry

This list is a safe forum for licensed professionals (therapists and
instructors) and enrolled massage students to discuss issues surrounding
massage - especially the BUSINESS AND POLITICS of massage - our main focus!
We are focused on the professional, ethical, and successful practice of
massage therapy, regardless of the techniques or modalities you use. We are
also very interested in and involved with educational quality for both basic
training and continuing education. You could say that this site is more about
Massage THERAPISTS than about Massage THERAPY.
Many of our discussions in this forum will be about the Laws and
Administrative Rules for massage and how to make them work for the
profession...how they can protect and enhance our professional lives while
also protecting the public. Participating here is one way to be heard and
build concensus.
We welcome discussion of professional practice issues, including technique
questions, but this site will not discuss erotic/sexual massage and does not
tolerate spam, overt sales, MLM's, trolls, or flamers (folks trying to annoy,
