News from the India HIV/AIDS Alliance

30th April 2007

A new online resource centre to boost sharing and learning among NGOs and others working on HIV and AIDS in India has been launched by the India HIV/AIDS Alliance. The virtual resource centre called SETU, meaning a bridge in Hindi, contains resources related to HIV and AIDS, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), gender, government, and international donor policies related to HIV/AIDS and development issues.

SETU is designed to be an India-specific resource based on the documents, publications, resources and outputs of the India HIV/AIDS Alliance and other organisations working on similar issues in India. Its key objective is to create a common platform for sharing knowledge and learning between the Alliance, its Lead Partner NGOs, state partners, implementing NGO partners, and others working on HIV and AIDS and SRH issues across India.

The knowledge in SETU is based around a number of key themes relevant to HIV and AIDS work in India including: care and treatment, prevention, gender, civil society, HIV/AIDS and sexual reproductive health, and government policies (India and international). External audiences will be able to download the majority of documents contained in SETU and will also find links to the global website of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance’s publications and resources.

The idea for the virtual resource centre came out of participatory internal exercises which assessed not only the needs of the Alliance’s own network of NGO partners but also drew upon those of other civil society organisations in India. The concept of a virtual resource centre was identified as one of the most effective ways to share and manage knowledge across Alliance partner networks in India, as well as establishing an India-specific resource for external audiences. This virtual resource centre is a key tool in Alliance India’s knowledge management strategy.

SETU was developed with the support of the UK Department for International Development.

About Alliance

Established in 1993, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance (the Alliance) is a global partnership of nationally-based organisations working to support community action on AIDS in developing countries. These national partners help local community groups and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to take action on AIDS, and are supported by technical expertise, policy work and fundraising carried out at the UK-based international secretariat and across the Alliance.

The Alliance has worked with community organisations from over 40 countries, provided financial support to over 3,000 projects (implemented by over 2,000 community and faith-based groups). Expenditure in 2006 alone was over US $55 million (£30 million).

The India HIV/AIDS Alliance was established in 1999 to expand and intensify the International HIV/AIDS Alliance’s global strategy of supporting community action to reduce the spread of HIV and mitigate the impact of AIDS. Since its inception, the Alliance has been committed to fostering and supporting the development of community-driven approaches to HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support and impact mitigation in India, with an emphasis on local leadership and responsibility. The India HIV/AIDS Alliance currently provides programmatic, technical, strategic, organisational development and financial support to a country-wide network of over 100 NGOs through a national Secretariat based in Delhi and six linking organisations (or Lead Partners) and state partner organisations in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Punjab and Orissa States.
