Mary,
RSD from a hand injury is common. A feeling of deep pain in the
hand and then arm is also common. In my own experience, it may be the
time to see a neurosurgeon,or a neurologist experienced in RSD
treatment. I had the same pain pattern; muscle spams, deep bone pain
in my hand and forearm, muscle loss, etc... only 6 weeks after the
near amputation of my right index finger in 2001. Starting treatment
ASAP after the diagnosis of RSD is made, is critical. The problem is
that very few doctors really know how to effectively treat RSD, due to
the fact that RSD is an "orphan disease",(not epidemic), and is not
defined as a disease by Workmans Comp. Also, RSD is NOT a MENTAL
ILLNESS!!!! It is very real. Ask your family doc, or the orthopedic
doc who treated your hand, if they know who to go see in your area. If
not, start searching for a doc experienced in managing RSD, ASAP.
www.rsds.org might be a place to start.
Hope this was useful. jgt
