peds needles are often mistaken for BUTTERFLY needles. DO NOT mistake
the 2! Butterfly have a tube and are easy on you BUT they are in the
skin longer are are THE SAME GADGE as the regular needles. Use them for
comfort and you can insist. Hospitals dont use them because they are
expensive. Manufacturers color code for gadge. The HIGHER the gadge
number the SMALLER the circumfrence of the needle!!! Black is 22g. and
the smallest. Most use a green at 21g. same as butterfly needles. BUT
TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION that smaller needles can do damage to red blood
cells. Depending on what test you are having, they may NOT be able to
use a smaller needle, again because it can damage and break the cells
as the blood is withdrawn from the vein. (Dont want to repeat a draw!)
AND last but not least: have Dr Rx ALL blood work at once. Dont freak
out.. pregnant women get up to 7 tubes taken at once. Even if there is
a remote chance he will want it later.. DO IT NOW to reduce the number
of times you are punctured. Good luck!
