This is good advice. I can trace the onset of my
Rosacea back to the mid-90s after using Flonase
ffor several years.

Beth,

This happens quite frequently. The steroid is absorbed into the
nasal blood vessels and transported underneath and around the entire
nose, up through the cheeks and even into the eye. There are many
documented cases and warnings by rosacea specialists. Below is just
one abstract on this topic.

Laurie,

After joining this group in 1999 and realizing that steroid nasal sprays
contribute to, and in my case, bring on Rosacea, I switched medications.

I do use Astelin, the antihistamine spray you mentioned, and my allergist
has me combine it with NasalCrom (mast cell stabilizer now sold OTC). I
simply avoid taking them within 20 minutes of oneanother. They do work
wonders for me! It's important to use the NasalCrom every four hours or so,
depending upon your symptoms and time of year. Tey are more of a preventive
action than something that should be used once you start sneezing, etc.
The one drawback I've noticed is the constant use of the NasalCrom does make
my eyes a bit drier, though.

Like you, I have severe allergies. I have been getting the immunotherapy
(shots) for eleven years and I take Zyrtec every day. Just this year, at
the age of 41, I've noticed my allergy symptoms were almost non-existent,
while those around me were wheezing and sneezing here in the Northeast.
Maybe I'm finally turning a corner!

Good luck,
Beth

> I got rosacea after I got allergy treatment which includes a nasal
steroid, in fact it was between 2-4 mo. after. There is also Astelin nasal
spray which is a nasal spray antihistamine. I am not really sure if the
nasal steroid contributes to the rosacea, but it is the only thing that
keeps my nose open enough for my ears not to get all plugged up (& fluid in
them in spring and fall) I also am on allergy shots and other meds and if my
nose is plugged, then my asthma is worse, so I am really in a situation
where I try to just use the spray as least as possible, and more when I have
to, but I do need it year round. I have not tried the mast cell stabilizers
though I am not sure they would help with the non-allergic part of the
rhinitis. Hmmmmmm AND can these sprays cause ocular rosacea? I also get
flushing on my chest, neck and ears (already had the ears thing since I was
young) and sometimes hot flushed feelings on my head if I am under a heating
vent so this is why I am!
> not
> totally convinced that the sprays caused the rosacea, though that does
not mean that it is not making it worse either. I do have to breath though
:( Maybe I will ask the allergist when I go next week. I also get allergy
shots, but still need all the meds to. -Laurie
