I am virtually convinced (as much as I can be about anything having
to do with rosacea) that
(1) significant sun exposure significantly increases your chances of
having rosacea, and
(2) sun-damaged skin is more susceptible to the telangiectasia
component of rosacea due to poorer drainage (a highly technical term
here ...) in the affected area.
I play a lot of golf. The other night I was at a dinner with a
bunch of older guys who have played golf probably for an average of
30 years. I would say that well over 50% of this "sample" exhibited
symptoms that any dermatologist would classify as moderate rosacea.
I really believe if I went in to the general population and
repeatedly drew similar matched samples, I would draw this number of
rosaceans in less than 1 in 20 samples (i.e. p << 0.05 in this deep
scientific study).
A micro-circulation expert I saw at Yale told me (incorrectly) that
I did not have rosacea, only sun damage. I believe I have both, but
I also believe that the latter dramatically increased the former.
I have read before Geoffrey's comments on the linkage, and I agree
that it is quite clear that plenty of people are neurally disposed
to rosacea with now clinical signs of sun damage.
If you have children, do what I wish someone had done for me --
never let them see the light of day without sunscreen. Among other
things, you will improve their genetic odds of avoiding your rosacea.
BTW, I totally second everyone's comments on Linda's ZincO in
response to Andrew's inquiry on things that help. I never see the
light of day without it. In fact, I think I am starting to slightly
reverse some of the sun damage and telangiectasia as my skin
naturally build back collagen.
