For Everyone,
The below email exchange was posted recently on the "rosaceans group" board. I
believe it is very important info, for good health, although it has nothing
directly to do with rosacea.
Also, during the past ten years or so, it seems to me that I have been guided to
discover new break-throughs in the health field, that many people have not yet
discovered. I am mentioning those here, to help anyone that wants to try them.
All but one of these suggestions are mostly for those who are over the age of 30
or 40.
The one exception, is the patented "Tonalin CLA", which appears to be "needed",
and very good for you, whether you're one year old, or over a hundred, and
whether you're skinny, fat, or in between. Just be sure to follow the directions
on the bottle, and don't take too much, although I believe it is pretty
harmless.
I hope everyone tries "Tonalin CLA", from <vitaminshoppe.com>, (where its price
is most reasonable), and enjoys the health benefits it makes possible. You can
also phone Vitamin Shoppe, toll free, at: 1-800-223-1216.
And, (as covered in the email exchange below), I hope everyone becomes very
cautious, concerning the Linoleic Acid content in Borage Oil, or from any other
source, even though I do not know of an absolute certainty, that Linoleic Acid
caused my problem.
For good health, there is another major breakthrough, which I would like to
share here, as a mini-book-review. It is in a book entitled "Methyl Magic", by
Dr. Craig Cooney, Ph.D., [ISBN 0-8362-3585-1 (HBK)].
Although this book would seem to be "old" information, published in 1999, its
revelations are only beginning to be widely recognized. A simple "recipe" of
supplements forms the crux of this book, which also includes clear ideas for
sensible dietary and exercise habits.
We may have heard of the "homocystine imbalance" issue, but Dr. Cooney presents
clear evidence, that EIGHTY PERCENT of all people have SOME DEGREE of this
imbalance. The "recipe" of supplements he suggests, is calculated to do away
with this imbalance, encouraging increased energy and vitality, a trimmer shape,
and a healthier mental outlook.
Many times, we hear how "good" it is, to take vitamin and mineral supplements,
but seldom are we informed, that these supplements, if they are not in the
correct amounts AND IN THE CORRECT PROPORTIONS, can cause problems, and even
make us sick. Therefore, I believe the simple "recipe", that Dr. Cooney
reveals, should be strictly adhered to.
This is not as easy to do as it might sound. So many manufactured foods are
"fortified" with large amounts of vitamins and minerals, that it is very
difficult, to control your intake of these supplements. Breakfast cereals are a
good example. I challenge you to find even one in a hundred, that is not
HEAVILY "fortified". In fact, at most "normal" supermarkets, shredded wheat has
been the only one I could find, out of hundreds.
Iron, as a supplement, is known to be toxic and cause heart damage, in excess
amounts. Dr. Cooney points out, that vitamin B-6 can cause nervous system
disorders, if over 200 mg per day is taken, for long periods of time. The
oil-soluble vitamins, (such as vitamin A), are known to be a problem, since the
body cannot move them out of the body easily. There is a case recorded, when
Arctic explorers were killed by the high vitamin A content of the liver of a
seal that they ate.
Even the seemingly innocuous water-soluble vitamin C can cause problems,
according to some studies. So, the simple "recipe" that Dr. Cooney supplies, is
much more significant than it might seem at first glance. Another fact that he
reveals, that very few people know, is that vitamin B-12 should be taken in the
"sublingual", or "lozenge" form. This form dissolves quickly under the tongue
and is absorbed in the mouth, rather than being swallowed.
Here is a quote from Dr. Cooney:
"Think of the methylation process as a central control dial. The setting of
that dial can make you sick or it can help keep you in top physical condition.
This dial is readily accessible, and you can set it using a few simple
strategies."
Here is the simple supplement "recipe", that radically changed my life for the
better. These are all available from vitaminshoppe.com, for about $15.00 per
month, (i.e. about $100.00 for a six month supply).
Try it yourself, and then buy Dr. Cooney's book, just as I did.
CAUTION: DIABETICS SHOULD NOT TAKE OMEGA-3 FISH OIL; (just omit the fish oil
from this supplement list, if you have diabetes).
DAILY SUPPLEMENT RECOMMENDATION:
1) Betaine/TMG, (Trimethylglycine): Don't use TMG Hydrochloride, (i.e. HCl),
because it can upset an empty stomach. Take only the plain Betaine/TMG, from
750 to 1,000 mg
2) Choline and Inositol, 250 mg of each
3) Folic Acid, 800 mcg tablet, (or 400 mcg tablet, plus 400 mcg from your
multivitamin)
4) Vitamin B-12, SUBLINGUAL TABLET, (i.e. lozenge), of 500 mcg
5) Vitamin E, one 400 IU softgel, in a natural, mixed-tocopherol form, (i.e.
containing all four forms: alpha, beta, delta, and gamma)
6) In a Multivitamin/mineral, (or take separately):
----Vitamin B-6, 20 to 50 mg
----Zinc, 20 to 50 mg,
----Selenium, 50 to 200 mcg, (at least some as L-selenomethionine)
7) Fish Oil, one or two softgels totaling up to 1,000 mg, supplying from 160 to
350 EPA, and from 100 to 150 DHA.
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX
Coenzyme Q-10 is also very important, for anyone over the age of 30 or 40. But
Co-Q-10 MUST be in a softgel form, containing oil, since the white powder form
found in capsules is worthless, because it is not absorbed by the body. Anyone
over the age of 30 may benefit, by taking a problem-preventive dose of 30 mg a
day. Over 40, everyone benefits, by taking anywhere from 30 mg a day, to 30 mg
twice a day, or even 100 mg a day, or 100 mg twice a day.
The following mini-book-review covers melatonin. An amazing little-known fact,
is that melatonin is easy and safe to use for age-regression. Melatonin is a
substance produced by the body, but falls off radically after the age of 30 or
40. By supplementing it in specific, carefully controlled amounts, we can
maintain the level at the youthful peak, and actually reverse the aging process.
Because melatonin also promotes restful, natural sleep, the pharmaceutical
sleeping-pill industry has probably succeeded in suppressing this age-regression
info, about melatonin. The only accurate source of info I know of, concerning
this, is "The Melatonin Miracle", by Pierpaoli and Regelson, (ISBN
0-6715-3435-1). This book was published about ten years ago, but may still be
available in paperback for $6.99, through
[1-(800) 223-2348] or [1-(800) 223-2336].
You need to find the sublingual/lozenge form ONLY, of melatonin,
in BOTH the 1 mg, AND the 0.5 mg, (i.e. 500 mcg) dosages.
These are not totally easy to find, but they do exist. If you have both sizes,
it makes it possible for you to adjust your dosage according to the following
suggested AGE-dose chart, increasing the amount as you grow older. It is easy
to know what dose to take. Each person is different, so if you find that the
below recommended dosage leaves you groggy in the morning, reduce your dosage by
0.5 mg at a time, until you find the right level for you.
How Much Melatonin Do You Need,
FOR AGE-REVERSAL, SUBLINGUAL MELATONIN PREFERABLE:
***************************************************
Age 40-45 - Take 0.5 to 1 mg, only at bedtime
Age 45-54 - Take 1 to 2 mg, only at bedtime
Age 55-64 - Take 2 to 2.5 mg, only at bedtime
Age 65-74 - Take 2.5 to 5 mg, only at bedtime
Age 75+ - Take 3.5 to 5 mg, only at bedtime
I hope this helps everyone stay as healthy as possible.

Re: [rosaceans] Dr. Lazoff on CLA, LA, & GLA
Hi, Tanya,
Yes, the dosage issue is still not clear, since there is more than one size of
softgel, of Borage Oil. But there is a much bigger picture, as well. It is more
than possible, that the high Linoleic Acid content of Borage Oil can cause major
problems, including a carcinogenic, (i.e. cancer causing), effect. I hate
bringing this up, because some of it is "guessing", concerning a very complex
issue, but it is staring me in the face....and this info might help many
rosaceans.
Back in Sept. 2003, Dr. Marjorie Lazoff cited a study that stated that Linoleic
Acid, (i.e. LA), is "a promoter of carcinogenesis", (i.e. cancer), while
Conjugated Linoleic Acid, (i.e. CLA), an "isomer" of LA, has "reputed anti-tumor
impacts", as at:
<http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-knowledge/message/2648>
Here are the ingredients, of the Borage Oil softgel that I took:
Borage Oil = 1,300 mg per one softgel
PROVIDING:
Gamma Linolenic Acid, (i.e. GLA) = 260 mg
LINOLEIC ACID = 465 mg
Oleic Acid = 195 mg
Directions on the bottle were to take one (1) daily, preferably with a meal.
I took four (4) daily, two at brunch, and two at dinner, for over 10 months,
with no apparent ill effects.
When I hold four of these softgels in my hand, they appear to be about one
tablespoon's worth. I took this much, because Dr. Perricone, (in "The Perricone
Prescription" book), recommends 1,000 mg of GLA per day, only for a WEIGHT LOSS
purpose.
So, in order to get 1,040 mg of GLA, I had to take 1,860 mg of Linoleic Acid,
which was in the 5,200 mg of Borage Oil, taken daily.
Since I almost never exercised, that may have affected my situation. My
situation, was that, after more than 10 months of taking this, I developed
severe pain, (which felt like a bowel obstruction), which would keep me in
severe pain for a whole day at a time. This would happen, every few days. I
know it sounds weird, to connect this to Borage Oil, but when I stopped taking
it, a couple of months ago, this pain ceased completely. However, I also
stopped taking the DMAE, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Tyrosine, that were on the same
WEIGHT LOSS supplement list recommended by Dr. Perricone.
So, with the pain, I began to think, "What the Hxll is CAUSING this???"
My mind actually went back and remembered Dr. Lazoff cautioning, against taking
"mega doses" of Linoleic Acid. In fact, she also disparaged CLA, which I took
as a personal affront, since I had recommended CLA to rosaceans, for four months
prior to her statement.
I recommended CLA only from vitaminshoppe.com, since there are "fake", (i.e.
different "isomer"), CLAs on the market, which are not produced by the patented
process of "Tonalin CLA", and probably would not give the good results that I
got with the "Tonalin CLA".
Dr. Lazoff said,
"...that we're missing
something in our understanding of LA and CLA. That's why in my
opinion we should not yet be taking mega-dietary amounts in
supplements of LA (or CLA), which was the point I was making.", as in:
<http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-knowledge/message/2655>
Of course, she does not explain what she means by "mega", but the point she made
is evidently a good one, in my present opinion, (after much pain, which I
believe may have been linked to the Linoleic Acid in Borage Oil).
I miss Dr. Lazoff, even though she has forced me to fight with her, about
[FLUCONAZOLE 1% SOLUTION] curing rosacea. After all, since she was banned by
the "rosacea-support group", (as I am), she must obviously have a lot on the
ball, and must be doing SOMETHING right.... ;-)
In fact, Dr. Perricone DOES take great care to EMPHASIZE that the maximum three
or four softgels of CLA per day should ONLY BE TAKEN AS A "DIVIDED DOSE", (i.e.
one softgel at a time), with meals, not all at one time. So, only one 1,000 mg
softgel should be taken, at each meal. For months, now, I have not taken more
than two of the CLA softgels per day, not out of any caution, but because I
haven't been eating three or four times a day, (which I admit is a poor way to
try to lose weight).
When I first took it, I took eight (8) softgels a day, for about a month, before
I decided that that much was not going to produce the miracle in weight loss,
that I hoped for. After that, for many months, I took three or four a day, one
at a time. After losing ten more pounds, I hit a brick wall, with no more
weight loss, but I continue to take CLA, for its decided health benefits.
Dr. Lazoff later brought up the:
"dangers of trans fatty acids", as at:
<http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-knowledge/message/2666>
Finally, she states the obvious very succinctly, that these matters are quite,
"complex issues", as at:
<http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-knowledge/message/2670>
So, I hope this helps, although it may just confuse the issue.
My belief in "Tonalin CLA" is as high as it ever was, but the best means of
getting the proper amount of GLA is a question for me. If I develop the
abdominal pain again, (without the Borage Oil), I'll be sure to let you know.
Of course, as always, diet cannot cure rosacea. Only [DMSO + fluconazole] can do
that, as at:

Dear Dave,
Apparently 1 tablespoon would translate into around 5-6 gel caps, 2 per meal
would suffice. In fact as Dr. Nase says the best way to take this would be to
use a combination of both Flaxseed and Borage which is available in Barleans
Omega Twin oil. You can get it from their site.
It is available in the oil as well as gel caps.

The only reservation I have, about the regimen you stated, is that the dosing is
not clear to me. I took Borage Oil for a while, supposedly to balance the Omega
3 fish oil that I take daily, and I ended up, after a few months, thinking it
might have caused me some GI tract distress. But that's all guessing. Anyway,
I'm unaware of being able to get Borage Oil other than in softgels, so a
tablespoon doesn't translate for me.
I apologize if I'm confusing this issue, because if anyone had been confused as
I am, about the dosing, I'm sure they would have asked.
Thank you for your thoughtful give-and-take.
And everyone, please contemplate curing your rosacea, as at:

Dear Dave,
Honestly, I dont have any opinion on your CLA theory.
However, the supplements which have been suggested to Lisa are purely hitting
rosacea where it hurts.
The Ester C and Grape seed extract are to reduce inflammation, improve collagen
and strengthen the blood vessels which have thinned out as is observed in
rosacea.
The EFA's are the ones recommended by Dr. Geoffrey Nase as being essential to
once again reduce flushing and strengthen capillary walls.
Thanks and regds.

...The nutritional supplements which you require to improve your diet and also
your rosacea condition are as follows :
- 1000-1500mg Ester C in divided doses of 500mg after or along with meals
- 1 tablespoon Flaxseed oil daily before a meal
- 1 tablespoon Borage oil daily before a meal
- 100mg of Grapeseed extract with 95% OPC/PCO daily in divided doses of 50mg
after or along with a meal.
These will provide you with the necessary EFA's, vitamins and anti-inflammatory
agents required for a healthy skin and for improving the condition of your blood
vessels.

Hi, Lisa,
The human digestive system is somewhere between that of the lion, and the
antelope, so it is clear to me that humans are "created" to eat at least a small
amount of meat, since vitamin B-12 is almost impossible to get "naturally",
without it.
However, the methods of "raising" cattle have changed radically in the past 50
years, in the USA. Antibiotics are routinely fed to cattle, and they are almost
never allowed to eat fresh grass.
As it turns out, there is a very important "Essential Fatty Acid", (i.e. EFA),
called "Conjugated Linoleic Acid", (i.e. CLA), which is only produced by certain
bacteria with fresh grass, in the stomachs of cattle, and other
multiple-stomached animals, like sheep. CLA is then normally in the meat and in
the milk, of cows.
CLA is one of three Essential Fatty Acids which the human body MUST have, to
function properly. Given CLA alone, the human body can make the other two EFAs.
So, during the past 50 years, we in the USA have all been methodically deprived
of CLA, which has been an essential part of the human diet for eons. In fact,
certain American Indian tribes created a complete "religion", centered on the
buffalo, and, as strange as it may sound, I believe their reverence derived from
the effects of CLA, when they ate buffalo meat. CLA seems to have profound
effects concerning our metabolism, so its absence may be the main reason for the
epidemic of obesity in the USA. And even skinny people need CLA.
Therefore, as you no doubt take a B-12 supplement, you should also take CLA,
since it was recently put on the market by a company that patented the process
for producing it from sunflower seed oil. Since there are "fake CLAs" on the
market, (i.e. different "isomers", which are technically still CLA, though they
may have entirely different effects), I recommend you get it only from the
Vitamin Shoppe chain of health food stores. The patented name is "Tonalin CLA",
and there is a website, if you do not have a store near you, at:
<vitaminshoppe.com>
Or phone them toll-free, at: 1-800-223-1216.
But none of this has anything to do with rosacea, actually. There is a cure for
rosacea, and the facts about that are at:

I have been a vegetarian since the age of 16 (I am now 23). I developed
early stages of rosacea at the age of 17. With that being said, I've
always wondered if my rosacea has something to do with the lack of
certain nutrients that are no longer a part of my diet since I stopped
eating meat. I use supplements and get the majority of my protein in the
form of soy. I've been considering a low-carb vegetarian diet lately to
see if it has any effect on my rosacea. Just thought I'd add in my
