Hi,

For those looking for a case study that to help 'sell' the benefits of TRF matching grant support for your projects, you might care to look at this link http://www.roisight.org/Downloads/roitrfcasestudy1.pdf  <http://www.roisight.org/Downloads/roitrfcasestudy1.pdf>

It demonstrates how a small contribution by Rotary Clubs, can generate a significant return ... in this case by a factor of sixteen ... but that is exceptional. That this was possible is of course due to fellow Rotarians, the Blindness Prevention Donor Advised Fund, as well as The Rotary Foundation itself.

By way of a reminder, if you are new to the power of TRF Matching Grants, and wish to learn more on how to submit a successful qualifying project application, take a look at this simple guide www.roisight.org/MG/mgnovicesguidenov07.pdf
<http://www.roisight.org/MG/mgnovicesguidenov07.pdf>

Hi,  you can now download the latest leaflet direct from this link www.roisight.org/Downloads/FlyerMar08web.PDF This reflects ROI's heightened focus of coupling your donation with a matching grant project to provide a better return on your investment

ROI has progressed from its earlier focus of simply mass screeing peoples in remote locations, to funding earlier screeing, treatment and / or other appropriate preventative measures, thanks to the Rotary Foundation (TRF).

Best wishes, Stephen

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Novice's Guide to Matching Grants http://www.roisight.org/MG/mgnovicesguidenov07.pdf

This guide to 2007-8 Non-Competitive MG's, for projects valued between $10k-$25k, has been produced by a novice for novices, following successful completion of our first ROI Matching Grant application. That said, many in RIBI and overseas have contributed to this current edition. If you feel it can be improved please do let me know. Thanks

If you feel it appropriate you may care to advise your Clubs / District Webmasters of its existence.

We do have access to other funds to support avoidable blindness programmes. If your Club has a relevant project in mind, that needs funding, and is not registered on the Matching Grants Database, please do let us know.

Kindest regards,

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends,

ROI has now been restyled the Rotarians Ophthalmic Initiative to better reflect that it is about helping to make blindness history, and not just about shipping equipment, as some have perceived.

Could potential host Clubs/Districts please take on board, that following a recent experience, linked matching grant opportunities will only be brokered when the host Club and/or District is prepared to take action to encourage and make available the low cost, award winning, pen sized, Optyse, or equivalent product to mid level staff in remote locations.  The Optyse has been specifically invented to support screening by less qualified people in remote heartlands of developing countries, and not just hospitals in cities, town and townships.

We are delighted to say that in a short period of time since we announced the TRF dimension, ROI is being approached to help establish new TRF Matching Grant opportunities to support surgery & other eye-care treatments. We are working hard on that to publish completed profiles of need.

Whilst there are so many deserving causes, would potential applicants please note that ROI cannot support non-sight enabling projects.

We need also to advise that potential applicants should feel comfortable in meeting our one and only condition, reproduced here for convenience from the ROI website … Where an ROI supported TRF grant project is being put together, following a needs assessment, we expect that 10% to 20% of the project value will be applied to make the Optyse™, or equivalent, available to trained people, living or working in remote locations, to undertake preventative general health & eye-care screening programmes.

If you are comfortable with that, and wish to develop an ROI supported matching grant project, we would love to hear from you and help you achieve your goal.

With best wishes,

Stephen, Stevenage Grange RC, District 1260

Delighted to advise that the Rotarians Ophthalmoscope Initiative (ROI) has been developed to assist Clubs and Districts wishing to pull together an eligible Rotary Foundation (TRF) eye-care / treatment matching grant project.

ROI was originally established to provide a simple to use mass screening ophthalmoscope for use in remote locations. The simplicity of this low cost, pen sized, lens-free OptyseTM enables not only ophthalmologists & optometrists but also eye care workers, ophthalmic nurses, ophthalmic medical assistants and aid volunteers to obtain an immediate view of the red reflex and fundus (retina).

Its mission is to encourage all medical personnel and eye-care workers in developing countries to feel comfortable carrying and using this unique diagnostic tool, in the same way they would a thermometer.

So if you are a Club that needs funds to undertake cataract operations, eye-care equipment or supplies, or a potential international funding partner, and would like to be added to our ROI matching grants project data base, do please contact me.

For a worked matching grant example providing a 1200% return please have a look at www.roisight.org/page17cfp.html

Many thanks,

Stephen, Stevenage Grange Rotary Club, District 1260

Matching grants, working with gift aid can make a big difference

(a worked example)

Lets say a member of the public wishes to donate £500 to ROI

S/he is willing to gift aid that. The value of the gift is now worth £640

You apply to for a District designated fund (DDF) contribution, and we apply for a Avoidable Blindness Donor Advised Fund contribution. Both donate an equivalent amount i.e. £640, making £1,920 in total.

The sponsoring (hosting) Club / District, supported by us, applies for a TRF Matching grant. Qualifying TRF matching grants are paid on the basis of 50% of cash donated, other than through DDF. DDF contributions are matched funded at 100%. So the value of the original gift has grown from £500 to £3,840, a factor of 7.5

Not only has the cash value increased, the original donor has now donated 140 units with a retail value of £6,234.

A great ROI or return on investment

A happy New Year to all,

ROI is pleased to announce the release of CFP, following agreement by V2020UK's International Committee.

CFP looks to bring the impressive array of voluntary eye-care programmes conducted in less developed countries to a wider global audience. It is open to all service clubs, individuals, Institutions and other organisations.

CFP and activities will be mapped and tracked between now and World Sight Day on 11th October 2007, to showcase & provide an opportunity to support a range of practical humanitarian programmes, and sight awareness activities, in the hope that collectively we can help make blindness history.

Following our pre-release statement (4th December), we are pleased that some 90 individuals and organisations have dipped into the relevant web page to find out more.

Details of the Programme with a word based Application form are now available from www.roisight.org/Downloads/ROICFP-introJan07.doc

We need your help please. We know that well over 1,000 attempted downloads of the ROI video have been made, in over 40 countries/regions since its release in November, but we don't know what you thought of it.  If you have already downloaded the ROI Video we would be most grateful if you would provide some feedback on its relevance to your Club's interests.  Good or bad, an email to stephen@... or through this list server, would be most appreciated.

Will this be converted into donations? The response level in the first few weeks has greatly exceeded expectation, but we have no knowledge of whether that might be converted into donations. With nearly 24% of visitors book-marking the web site as a favourite this month, I guess they are potential supporters / donors out there.

One of the challenges of projects such as this is managing cash flow & knowing when to order each  batch of ophthalmoscopes – outlay £12,500. So if your Club is considering making a donation, either in support of IMPACT or more generally, or has agreed to do so but has yet to `order' we would be most grateful for an indication of your interest, in terms of numbers of potential units, and when (which month) your donation might be expected.   That way we can ensure that we have stock to place your donated units with the eye-care charities without delay, and can credit you on the web site.

Those with broadband wishing to view the easy-stream video can still do so via www.roisight.org/Downloads/roishow-1.5mbps.wmv If you do not have broadband you might care to view it via the animated PowerPoint version available through the website.

Thanks for your help in anticipation.

With best wishes for the New Year,

ROI is delighted to lend support to the IMPACT Foundation

Thanks to Past RI Director, Keith Barnard-Jones' facilitation, ROI will arrange to ship up to 200 engraved OptyseTM lens-free ophthalmoscopes for use by IMPACT in the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Africa, India & other locations around the globe, subject to receiving sufficient dedicated donations.

So if you or your Club is going to support this hugely important project this year, why not download this ROI donation form now and nominate IMPACT as your preferred beneficiary. Channelling your donation to IMPACT, though ROI, makes financial sense, as each £25 donated provides an award winning, UK manufactured pen-sized ophthalmoscope valued at £44.65 excluding P&P.

Furthermore, if sufficient donations and pledges are received by the end of January we can ship the units dispatch free. So if you wish to support this excellent charity, and help make blindness history, please don't delay.

For further information on IMPACT please do visit their web site www.impact.org.uk
