Hello everyone,
I will like to attract your attention to a new surgical
technique for RP cure by omental transplants in retina developed in
India by Dr. Virendra K. Agarwal, who has reported his results in 2
peer reviewed well reputed journals as a possible cure for RP. I am
giving the journal article titles and the relevant references and
also the abstract from one of the publication . Please focus on the
last 2 lines of the abstract given below from the journal
International surgery, Volume: 92 Issue: 3 Pages: 174-183
Published: MAY-JUN 2007
(a) Title: Long-term results of omental transplantation in chronic
occlusive arterial disease (Buerger's disease) and retinal avascular
diseases (Retinitis pigmentosa)
ABSTRACT: Salvage of limbs affected by Buerger's disease has been a
dilemma for surgeons. Palliative sympathectomy relieves vasospasm
only in the early stages. Reconstructive procedures are usually not
possible as graft patency rates are low. Limb amputation often is the
only available management option left. We used the omentopexy
technique to salvage these limbs. Omentopexy was performed in 273
patients with sympathectomy failure in end-stage Buerger's disease.
The technique of omentopexy is presented. The outcome has been
analyzed with respect to improvement of clinical symptoms, ulcer
healing, and angiographic and color Doppler studies. Of the 273
patients, 250 available for follow-up were followed for a mean of 7.5
years (range, 1-19.5 years). One- to 5-years follow-up (n = 110
cases) revealed good results in 94% of patients. Long-term follow-up
(5-15 years; n = 140 cases) showed good results in 85% of patients. A
similar situation exists in the retina; pedicle omentopexy in the eye
restored vision in retinal avascular diseases (retinitis pigmentosa).

THE OTHER PAPER WAS PUBLISHED IN :

TITLE: Pedicled omental transplant to the eye

Source: JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS Volume: 201
Issue: 3 Pages: 486-486 Published: SEP 2005

As an RP patient myself, I am really excited about this development.
If somebody is interested I can forward a PDF file of the last paper.
It will be great if some doctors comment on this new technique.
regards
Ankit
