Re: [resveratrol-users] Either/Or Thinking

Precisely - that style of thinking (of Claxton's) is medieval, similar
to Dr. Leon Kass saying to Dr. David Sinclair "Well, why would
you want to have immortality or great longevity when you're supposed
to get that out through your children."

We must face this kind of thinking and deal with it or it will run over
us, with ignorance.

The whole point of the human race is progress and upward direction.

Period!

I think David Claxton's philosophy is downright ridiculous. He wants us to forego using "a pill" to improve our bodies, and instead use "the old-fashioned way" -- exercise. Suppose we applied this same philosophy to other things... such as washing clothes, for example. We'd forego using washing machines and take our clothes down to the river and scrub them on stones, right? Or we'd forego umbrellas when it rains, and just let ourselves get wet, the "old-fashioned way". This would somehow be better for us?

Perhaps one reason Claxton feels uncomfortable with the idea of a pill to replace exercise is that he made his living as a physical education teacher. He lists several other reasons in his article:
Physical activity keeps the mind sharp. It provides opportunities to socialize with your friends. It allows you to set goals and to experience the sense of accomplishment that comes from reaching them...
All of these purposes can be achieved in other ways -- the mind can be kept sharp with mental activities or, someday soon, with other pills; socializing and a sense of accomplishment can come from many activities other than exercise.

As for me, I'll continue taking resveratrol until something even better comes along, and then I'll start taking that!
