Re: [repetitivestrain] Carpal Tunnel Surgery??????

gak!
NOOOO!

that's the thing about that surgery, it does diddly~squat.
I was told to have surgery 2 years ago, i have damage in carpal and ulna
nerve in right arm, and carpal in left. So I was looking at two surgeries,
and a very extended long time without the use of a hand, i would have went
NUTZ.
And after having talked to about 3 dozen people who have had the surgery
without good results, I was very reluctant to try it.
Instead, i have taken a natural approach - i have used exercises, stretches,
wear wrist splints at nite when it acts up, eat more spicy foods (they are
natural anti-inflammatories) and take breaks when doing anything very
intensive with the hands, i.e. keyboarding, musical instruments, crafts -
stop and stretch for ten minutes every hour or every half-hour if necessary.
I also use a moisturizer with a couple drops of rosemary and lavender oil on
my hands, wrists and forearms (rosemary and lavender have anti-inflammatory
properties, and smell nice too :)
I find alternating ice with a heating pad works well too - 5 minutes on the
ice, 5 minutes on the heat..and stretch, stretch.
And here's the biggie that keeps me from waking up in the middle of the
night with burning agony - my husband massages me. He starts at the hands
and works up to the spot on the spine right between the shoulder blades -
that's where the nerve ends! The problem isn't in the wrist, so much as THE
ENTIRE NERVE. I don't understand why doctors do this "carpal tunnel release"
surgery - they're just making a bigger "tunnel" for the nerve to swell,
that's all - then they convince you to do the surgery again - and with all
those unnecessary surgeries they get to buy a new mercedes ;-)*lol*

Other people on the list may have more ideas of what works for them.
All the best,

be blessed,
Dee

The main reason you need another surgery is because the pressure on the median nerve was caused by something outside of the carpal tunnel. Go to...
