Hi Keri,
When you were rear-ended you probably got whiplash from your head jerking front and back violently, or it may have gone side to side. Either way, it caused multiple spasms to develop in the scalenes muscles of your neck. These muscles cross right over the brachial plexus (a bundle of nerves) that are the beginning of the median/ulnar/radial nerves to the upper trunk, arms and hands. When a muscle spasm is pressing on the nerve (in this case the median nerve) it causes numbness in the thumb and first two fingers. When the spasm is pressing on the ulnar nerve it causes numbness in the ring and pinky fingers.
The good news is that you can easily treat the spasms that are impinging the nerves. While you are waiting for the results of your MRI, go to www.aboutcts.com and read the section called "Anatomy Lessons". That section will explain why the muscle spasms will cause numbness, or even pain.
It's important not to get discouraged, and for you to know that you can reverse this condition. Let me know how you are doing after your MRI results are read by your doctor.
Wishing you well,
Julie

pain I get isn't numbness its mopre of a pain feeling and sometimes
I have to shake my hand but that doesn't work. I was thinking that I
could have Carpal tunnel but maybe my pain in my hands is coming
from my neck from when I was rear ended in May! I will just have to
wait until I get my MRI done and see what the doctor tells me. When
my pain in my hands started I had shooting pains in my fingers so
maybe that could be carpal tunnel but I don't know!
What causes Carpal Tunnel?
Thanks for your help!
Keri
